Since you are (and rightfully so), a fan of shortening the shaft length in general for longer clubs, having forgiving driving irons (like the Taylormade P DHY) as part of the test would be great to see. I use the 3 iron and 4 iron Taylormade P DHY and have had great success, especially when it comes to balancing distance with control. I believe when it comes to shaft length, driving irons have the shortest length vs hybrid or fairway wood equivalents. Thanks for the video!!!

Carry 14 clubs. I have the 5 hybrid and 9 wood. The 9 wood is shorter than 5 hybrid but longer than my 6 iron. More important, 9 wood allows me to get over tall trees after an errant drive, and get over bunkers right in front of the green without rolling of the back. It's a great club.

A 9 wood, along with the 7 wood, has been a revelation and a massive improvement in my bag. So easy to hit, even from the rough. They’ve become my go to clubs for 180-200yd shots (I’m at altitude). Forget the long irons, I’m not strong enough anymore. I’m considering an 11 wood but they’re harder to find in a local shop.

I always love your videos. Very factual and fair. On your advice, prior, I substituted my 4, 5 and 6 irons for Hybrids. With an easier swing I found more control and greater consistency. The confidence gained with the larger head cannot be overlooked and produced great results for me. Another favorable aspect of the hybrid is how well it performs from rough and hardpan versus the same-lofted irons or fairway woods (I assume that is why they are called "fairway" woods because they only work in the fairway :).

At age 61 I’ve retired the 4 & 5 irons from my bag and added Titleist TSR2 4 & 5 hybrids with great joy and results. And just recently I picked up a Ping G430 6 hybrid to replace my existing 6 iron. I may leave the six iron in the bag still, and remove one of my wedges, which I have too many of you, which ever is suitable for any particular situation. First time I am going to be trying out a Ping hybrid, so we will see how that pans out. I’m expecting great results. Great video on these clubs. I agree with all the data. It’s all spot on.

Great thought provoking video. The only other club to throw into the mix is the 5 Hybrid Iron. Long iron range is where the Hybrid Irons are very competitive, and whilst I accept that the shorter Hybrid Irons can make shaping shots difficult, the long irons are good at launching the ball consistently.
@kenlietp17 минут бұрын
great analysis, I still use a 5 iron to land on the green without the ball running off too much, but I do have a 3i hybrid to carry distance across water or hazrds. The hybrid also seems more versatile than the wood on various lie conditions like rough and bunkers cheers.

Great video Andy. I think it shows the key and what so many amateurs don’t appreciate is knowing your lofts and distance with each club. You still so many Driver, 1 or 2 fairways and a hybrid with no real understanding of the gaps and characteristics. From my own experience was already a convert to 5 hybrid more for the consistency and lack of drop in bad shots than 5 iron initially without bug changes to distance between a good 5i and 5h. With this in mind and having concerns. Around 6 iron I started experimenting with 6h expedition to replace it in the bag. However with a good summer my end of season bag looks somewhat different to expectations as my strike improved. PXG Gen2 21 Degree 7 wood 195-210 Ping G410 22 degree 4h 185-195 Ping G 26 degree 5 h. 175-185 Ping G410 30 degree 6h. 165-175 Ping S56 6i (30 degree). 155-165 The gap between 6i and 5 h became a clear club. As I type I’m waiting for a G410 5h to arrive that I couldn’t resist. I’m sure many will see the 7w and 4h and think they are too close but because of course set up and wind conditions at my home course it works for me. Plus with adjustability now I can change for different courses. And blimey a 23 degree 5 iron is whole club more than my slot in the bag whether it’s iron or hybrid 🤣🤣 But again underline the importance of knowing what you use

@JR-xn4gl19 сағат бұрын
Interesting timing. I just ordered the 5i for my set of irons. I did this because I'm finding that (although I hated it at one time) my 6i is becoming my rescue club. It seems to work better for me getting the ball out of the longish rough and when I need to get some forward progress going out of the shortish rough or on the fairway, I'm able to get the ball up and away (sometimes even in the correct direction!) The next longest club I'm finding to be my friend is my 7w off the fairway and then the 5w. My 4 hybrid doesn't seem to want to rescue me out of the rough and we've not gotten along much yet on the fairway, but it has become my go-to club when chipping from a bit of distance off the green! I'm counting on my 5i to give me the comfort of my 6i but with a bit more distance. All this said, I'm still hoping to add some competence with my 4 hybrid. Very helpful vid as always.

Hybrid all day. Versatility. This video prompted me to conduct a similar test, but with 3, 4 and 5 hybrid. As a slower swing player all averaged about the same distance - just how they got there was different and how consistent they were. Good to know I can confidently leave two of these clubs out of my bag.
@ryang523023 сағат бұрын
I have a 5 hybrid in my bag and what you don't get from testing indoors is how much easier it is to hit out of the semi-rough. BUT I find it much easier to hit a 5-iron straight off the tee, which is why both are in my bag.
@justinstephenson9360Күн бұрын
Great video covering the options on that tricky area for us average golfers namely what is the longest iron we should carry and filling the gap between that and your longest fairway wood Please remember though that there are different designs of hybrid, some of which are easier to launch than others, some of which are almost fairway woods. I will always take consistency and control over distance, but depending on where you play you may need to take into account how the clubs will perform in the wind.

I added 7w to my bag one month ago, and it has been my favorite and most confident club. The forgiveness and stopping power for a 200y shot is money. Plan to try the 9 wood, and I guess my only complaint about switching long iron with fairway wood is the cost, particularly in matching the aftermarket shaft.

For this distance range, I would like to suggest going with the club that gives you the most diversity. Think of it as a utility club. Do we really need all these wedges and clubs in our bags especially if you walk and carry. So my first choice would be to pick the club that does the most for you..has the most variety and then fill in your set around that. For me that is a 5 wood..I go 3 wood, 5 wood, 4 iron. I hit a high ball). I like chipping with it sometimes...It is better out of the rough than a hybrid...I can make it go a variety of distances and trajectories just by choking up to some degree.

@johnatchley975413 сағат бұрын
A comparison that has become timely and very important. There are top pros carrying 9 woods. The critical factor is peak height and descent angle to get balls over water or green front bunkers and stop dead on small firm fast greens. At your 80+ swing speed Andy, a 5 iron is just barely okay with descent angle 41-42 degrees. I can see where the hybrid works best for you. But if you run the same test at 70mph swing speed, it becomes starkly clear that 5 iron is no longer a good choice, while the hybrid is okay but closer to borderline and the 9W with higher descent angle looks better. I am in that lower swing speed and carry a 21 deg 7W, 24 deg 9W and 27 deg 11W. Last iron is a 7.

My bag 5 hybrid 7wood then a 5 wood for the winter, Autumn, Spring 3W summer period. I had the exact same issue with irons, I changed the swing weight from D2/3 to D0/1 for my 6i, 5i and 4i. The 4i and 5i I pulled the steel shafts and swapped to 80gram graphite stiff form 110gram steel. ALL my 4i, 5i, and 6i have the same club lengths, improved my club speed by 5 mph. Iron shafts past 38.5inch I lose control enough of the heads to be of value. I take the 7wood over the 4 iron all day long. ( i love using long irons but avoid during club comp events ) & Wood I used a ( tip) cut down driver shaft ( r flex) at 42inch so flex is . Allows for much lower launch/ spin, but the carry and accuracy is excellent. I see tour players now use the same concept

5i (mine is 23 deg): Most satisfying when done right. Problem is too many "wrongs". It usually stays home. 5h (25 deg): Highest for me off of the deck, but it hooks too often, especially off the tee. Mostly use it for odd jobs- fairway traps, certain lies, certain chips. 9w (24)- Rarely a bad one, goes a few yards more, but I need to get it higher and more precise on approach shots. It's the noob of the group. Great for chipping on the fringe when off off the putting surface by 3-6 feet. 5h works better for chips that are longer or in taller cut. Definitely more trustworthy off of the tee than the 5h. I'm a fit 71 year old. (Not as fit as Mr. Player at that age.🙂)

Two points to consider: 1) can you as a club golfer GENUINELY play scratch golf ??? 2) If you constantly play courses with par-4's at a distance of 450 yards ----- will you have the accuracy from 200 yards for GIR ??? As a club golfer; any par-4 around 450 should be viewed as a drive & two irons into the green. Knowing your own personal yardages ----- with accuracy ----- is key. I personally enjoy playing in the fairways and hitting greens with irons.
