The genisis of the plan and construction of this station will be viewed as an embarrassment over time. Metro North would not allow the LIRR to share the lower level of Grand Central so the LIRR had to build this way oversized 8 track terminal instead of sharing the even larger existing Grand Central Terminal. To make matters worse, Amtrak and NJT are still looking to build 8 new tracks to Penn Station instead of implementing through routing. New York and the USA's lack of focus has led to projects that cost too much and deliver too little and is why NYC metro traffic is awful.

6:15 - that's a shot of the L in Chicago. Trains in NYC very rarely run aboveground - to the point that Spider-Man 2 *also* used some Chicago trains to double NYC when the script called for an above-ground train - and you can see the CTA ("Chicago Transit Authority") logo on the side.

What are you talking about “rarely?” Almost all of NYC’s subway lines have an above ground elevated tracks portion. Just not in midtown Manhattan. You must not live or have ever been here.

I'm looking forward to the LIRR East Side Access at Grand Central when it finally opens: it will save myself and others the bother of going to Penn Station and having to head over to Times Square on the the 1,2 or 3, then taking the Shuttle, or the 7 to Grand Central, just to connect to the East Side subway lines. Should help relieve the enormous congestion that we get over on the west side.

@@ikmarchini I mean I live in Finland and obviously we have cleaner water and more reliable electricity and public transport and working public infrastructure but New York has many great things cities here don’t have 🤷♂️
@ikmarchini3 жыл бұрын
Very true. New York is a great city. Born and raised here I have lived 17 years in Europe in Munich, Paris, and Spoleto, Italy. The difference, as I see it, is Europe, except UK, sees transport as a government matter and we see it as private development and a money making opportunity. That is left over from the 19C and now when government took over from failing, competing transports they inherited a mess. And then they added competition between government entities- Feds, States, counties, cities and locally. Not good. I love how I can land at CDG or FRA and get on a train to anywhere in the country. Not at all possible here. We are discovering competition and the free market is not always the best. Can't wait to visit Finland and see friends and see how you do it, maybe when they finish the tunnel to Estonia. You sure have us beat on public education. Kiitos.

I highly doubt. In America, our infrastructure projects end up taking TOO much time and BEYOND the money planned. I heard NYC has been talking about this particular project for over 20 years now. It's such a shame.
@joermnyc3 жыл бұрын
This project, no, but the new funding will build the new Hudson tunnels, which are desperately needed so we can finally repair the 2 existing tunnels that were damaged during Hurricane Sandy almost 10 years ago! (The money was coming until President Spray-tan cut it off out of spite because we didn’t vote for him.)

You never cease to amaze me - great job. I wonder how the building project for the underground had been adapted over the years to deal with climate change; we've all seen the pictures of torrential rain in NYC and the water gushing down subway access and underground stations.
