Great video once again O'Hare desperately needs this upgrade and 2028 is a pretty quick turnaround for such a big project. I think the designs look nice too, though not convinced about the space for events and live music, since airports I've been through have never had that, but who says things can't change.
@danielwhyatt3278
@danielwhyatt3278 2 жыл бұрын
I very much doubt that part as well, but would be nice if it did happen. I’m betting they could get the project completed before 2028 if they were actually willing to accept the fact that they would have to have a reduced service. But then again this is America we are talking about. Accepting less profits would be like asking them not to drink. It’s profits or nothing.😓 The only other country that I can imagine could get it done sooner would have to be China. Especially as the new Beijing airport being built looks surprisingly very veeeeery similar to this one. Both in materials, structural shape and interior design.

Wasn’t a great experience travelling to O’Hare missed my flight twice on route back to London, the more surprising thing though was that the experienced staff on the ground were so used to this & dealt with alternate flights so politely & before we’d got to the tick desk. I live in Japan and my home is in Wisconsin. 15 years ago flew in to O'Hare. What a nightmare! My flight to Wisconsin had been canceled so I called my family to pick me up in Chicago. Just by luck we found each other. After getting out of customs I couldn't see an exit anywhere, but ahead of was a single door. Went through it and my parents were about 100 feet away trying to find exit for international flights which they too couldn't find. Airport personnel were also extremely unfriendly. (I previously worked at Portland Airport and we would never treat travelers that way back then). My next flight home I avoided Chicago, traveled from Nagoya to Detroit instead and easily caught my connecting flight to Wisconsin. Detroit has one long, long terminal, but at least it made it easy to figure out where your flight was instead of the nightmare that is O'Hare. Hopefully these changes will fix all that.

I love these airport videos. Something about airports and their design both aesthetically and functionally fascinate me to no end. Take a look at the almost finished Helsinki - Vantaa airport in Finland. I think the interior has been done quite nicely, but the outside "big picture" looks scattered, littered with a bunch of structures from different eras and the main "attraction" basically just plumped down in the middle like a box. It has the el to downtown which takes about 45 minutes and only gives you train access to the Loop - gawd forbid you want to transfer or wind up elsewhere on the north side or burbs. It’s not great but exists; in many places in Asia or Europe it would be a 10 or fifteen minute express ride to downtown and in a really well planned place, 30 minutes to most of the city via tram - metro transfers. America: where public infrastructure goes to suffocate to death.

O’Hare is far and away the most depressing airport I’ve ever been to. The international terminal feels like a budget office block, with a school cafeteria thrown in for good measure. So glad to see it’s getting some much-needed work done. Great vid as always! (And some bonus travel trivia: O’Hare has the airport code ORD, because it used to be known as Orchard Place Airport. The more you know!)

I’m glad we’re finally focusing on the renewal of American infrastructure, specifically Airports. As the country that invented and pioneered flight and the commercial airport, It’s been difficult to see them reach and be pushed beyond their intended lifespan and become more difficult and expensive to maintain, showing signs of decay that just isn’t acceptable. I’m hoping this and the many tens of billions being spent overhauling other U.S. airports like JFK, LaGuardia, LAX, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia expanding it’s cargo operations, will signal a new age in American commercial Aviation that makes domestic and international travel within and from the U.S a much more pleasant experience and take American Airports off of lists of the worst airport experiences. I know they’ll never be the super luxurious airports like those of the Emirates or major Asian hubs but, considering U.S. airports are in part, publicly funded, I wouldn’t want them to be. Just a simple, clean, modern and convenient experience with minimal hassle and no additional hoops to jump through.

So my friend and I had to sleep another nigjf in Chicago and the next morning everyone who had their flights cancelled from 3pm to the night was in terminal 5 at 3 am. As an architect, I find very embarrassing when other architects are trying to explain their design by comparing the shape of the building with some anecdotical reference, when in fact they know it has nothing to do with it, just pure marketing to sell it to their stakeholders. I do not see anything functional, esthetical or technical about the random shape of a river in Chicago that is useful or valuable to design the new airport. Making people believe those stories only degrades our profession and creates a dishonest idea about how architecture is created.
