The idea of bitcoin being "carbon negative" doesn't make any sense. Its just riding on a method of energy production that doesn't necessarily have to be directed towards mining/hashing/etc. Bitcoin is very energy intensive, which will never be carbon neutral when fuels are being burned, as it would be taking energy from other sectors that could have used that more efficient energy production instead of relying on carbon producing sources. EDIT: a real way for bitcoin to become "carbon neutral" is if the waste heat is used in locations where electric heating would have been already, as computing energy is almost entirely given off as waste heat. Even then, you have to deal with the immense cost of production silicon has over traditional heating coils.

The average landfill will be able to generate about 8 MW. As it stands, it’s extremely expensive for municipalities to harness that. It does happen, where they are able to harness the energy, and put it back in the grid, but it’s uncommon. So bitcoin isn’t “taking energy from other sectors”, in those cases, as bitcoin miners are the only way it’s economically feasible to access that energy. The reason the energy production is directed towards hashing, is, that’s the only way to offset the cost of eliminating the methane. Like I said, in the video, if 2% of landfills worldwide had bitcoin methane combustion miners setup on site, it would completely offset bitcoin’s current carbon emissions. 100% of landfills would make bitcoin the #1 tool for fighting carbon emissions.

@@UIM_Loki Hashing is still computing. What makes it "financially viable" to use that an an energy source versus any other form of computing, if that's the angle being taken? Why not other means of using that energy if it's too far off grid? Capturing and transporting that methane so that it can be used on grid, or just producing electricity on site for other uses (electric garbage trucks anyone?). That is, if it makes sense to do so in the first place. Using landfill gas to power engines for energy production has to be burnt at lower temperatures than flaring, which leads to more toxic chemicals/gasses being released into the air, even if they don't cause the greenhouse effect. www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/what-if-garbage-fumes-powered-more-our-cars-trucks-and-buses www.epa.gov/lmop/basic-information-about-landfill-gas www.energyjustice.net/files/lfg/factsheet-lfg.pdf

Hashing is required to produce block subsidy which is why energy is directed towards hashing. I already said that you can redeploy the methane back into the grid, bitcoin is there for the 90%+ of cases where it's not economically feasible to do so. In the video I mention, the startups are only addressing these cases where it's not economically feasible to do other things with the methane, and bitcoin is the only solution. You may find all of your questions answered watching the video if you have some spare time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2PNqZKZasmAobM

Imagine if the energy generated from the landfills was instead used to offset the energy demand on the central power grid, which is primarily fueled by the burning of fossil fuels. That’s how it would benefit the environment.. this isn’t an innovative way of extracting energy. This is done all the time and using that energy for mining bitcoin does nothing to help the environment.. it just helps stakeholders that have invested in bitcoin make more money lol. Which is fine I guess, it’s just annoying to present it in a way of making mining crypto “carbon neutral”.. it’s just a lie

To be clear, bitcoin mining is very energy intensive. Electricity for Bitcoin mining overwhelming comes from fossil fuels, and the increased demand used up by Bitcoin mining contributes to a rise in electricity prices due to increased energy demands. There is no way Bitcoin mining could be carbon negative while it is using energy. We already have separation processes for landfill methane, and this landfill methane is already being distributed as a fuel source. If the energy from methane decomposition was supplied into a proper energy grid, it would serve the same purpose. Electricity from landfill methane could be used for ANY purpose electricity could be used for. The use of sequestered landfill natural gas as a fuel source is at best carbon-neutral, and that is only if you assume that the methane would be burned anyway either by flares or as a fuel source. Good video otherwise.
@UIM_Loki
@UIM_Loki Жыл бұрын
As it stands, bitcoin currently consumes more energy than it offsets. I don’t deny that. It’s also true what you’re saying, a lot of places can actually harness the methane from landfills and redeploy back into the grid. Bitcoin steps in when it would be cost prohibitive, or just economically unfeasible to set up that infrastructure. When you extend that utilization to all sequestered, wasted, or stranded energy, that’s where the use case for bitcoin becomes undeniably ground breaking, as 50% of all energy created is currently wasted due to the excessive costs and frictions of building infrastructure and transferring energy. Additionally, having a permanent buyer of energy has a significantly healthy effect for balancing the load on any electrical grid, as grids are designed to accommodate energy loads during peak hours. Turns out it’s not good for the energy plants to have to constantly throttle up and down.

If it was profitable to turn methane into power, don't you think someone would be extracting it already? And even if bitcoin miners have discovered some incredible new power source, they're just going to get outcompeted by any new company that doesn't pump a bunch of its money into bitcoin mining.
@UIM_Loki
@UIM_Loki Жыл бұрын
It’s only profitable to profit from harvesting methane if there’s already infrastructure in place to store, transfer, or use the methane on site. All those options are extremely cost prohibitive, though there are certain cases where it’s actually being done and that’s great. Bitcoin serves the 90%+ of places where it’s not economically feasible to do so. Bitcoin has no competition in these environments, because there’s no other economically feasible way to harvest the methane.

when i had to adjust to 24 hour format for the army the easiest way for me to think about it was like this, 1am to noon is exactly the same, just add a 0 infront if its not a double digit hour. ANYTHING from 1pm to midnight i think like this, how far is the number from 12? 21:00? thats 12+9. 18:00? that 12+6. when youre learning just try to think of it as a simple math problem where 12 is always the number you have to add to! 1300 is 12+1 making it 1pm, 2300 is 12+11 making it 11pm and so on! good luck with the switch! it makes things alot less confusing in the long run. Now i just know when i look at 24 hour time what it is, and if i am tired and doubt myself i refer to the method above!

''Bitcoin employs the laws of thermodynamics'' is THE most Bitcoin bro thing i have ever heard. Every electronic and living thing on this planet employs the laws of thermodynamics dude. I enjoy your content but i cringe so hard when you go on your Bitcoin rants about how it will change the world
@UIM_Loki
@UIM_Loki Жыл бұрын
Bitcoin's connection to thermodynamics is primarily through its consensus mechanism called Proof of Work and the concept of entropy. In thermodynamics, entropy refers to the measure of disorder or randomness in a system. Bitcoin's difficulty adjustment mechanism is inspired by this concept. The difficulty of the mathematical puzzles miners need to solve is adjusted periodically to ensure that blocks are added to the blockchain at a consistent rate, approximately every 10 minutes. If miners are collectively solving puzzles too quickly, the difficulty increases, and if they are too slow, it decreases. This adjustment mechanism maintains a balance between the energy expended (entropy) and the rate of block creation. Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million coins, which is enforced through unmanipulatable and incorruptible code. This contrasts with the world reserve fiat currency (USD), where central banks have the authority to print more money, inevitably leading to hyper inflation that destroys the value of people's savings. While technically the USD does abide by the laws of thermionics in terms of transacting it, securing it, and creating it, it's extremely short sighted to suggest that "Since all phenomena are governed by the principles of thermodynamics, any entity utilizing these principles becomes analogous to other entities subject to the same laws."

11:57 This entire piece is one of the reasons i choose to watch Loki over other OSRS creators. I love thinkin bout that shit. I did the same thing with 24 hour time format and it gave me an epiphany on why i had a hard time learning a second language. Im teanslating by habit, not fully accepting and understanding. Its difficult because i have to translate. 20:00 is 8 o'clock to me still. It doesnt translate to "a couple hours after dinner, a couple hours before bed" until i convert it in my head still, even though ive been using it for a few years. Atleast its easier to distinguish am from pm lol and it has been easier than it used to be, just not natural and fhats why i related it to learning a language Edit: additionally something similar and even more intriguing to me is that cultures that use cardinal directions instead of behind/front/left/right know which direction north is instinctually. That isn't common in america unless you navigate a lot for work/hobby. We truly do inheret the concepts upon which our parents (and others we look up to as children) understand the world. Its certainly a cultural thing and the way those differences are similar and dissimilar at the same time between cultures fascinates me to no end.

I’m assuming your talking about GPUs doubling in price. Bitcoin effectively can only be mined with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Bitcoin miners aren’t competing for hardware that is used anywhere else. There are a bunch of other cryptos that use a GPU mining based consensus algorithm, so you can be mad at those, but GPUs stopped being viable for bitcoin in 2013.
