Just got goose bumps. I've seen Vanessa sing live in a suburban pub in Melbourne, her voice is mind boggling good...almost ethereal in places and powerhouse in others....how she's not world famous says something about her bad management and not her incredible talent.

Vanessa is just a beast. Her voice is one of a kind. When it comes to long, sustained notes, I think about “You are not from here” by Lara Fabian, where she just sustains the last note for 19-20 seconds 😵😩

I was at the rehearsal for the opening ceremony the day before this performance & we weren't allowed to talk about any of it until it had aired the next day. John Farnham & Olivia Newton John were the ones everyone was excited about, but this was the one everyone there had trouble not talking about, it was clearly something super special & was going to be a major highlight and then at the real thing, that cloth actually worked properly & made it even more spectacular than we could have imagined! Night before the cloth was a bit of a mess, there wasn't the people in the middle & we didn't get the rings on it & pretty sure the other images weren't on it either, just a couple for testing purposes, but they kept as much as they could secret. There was an earlier rehearsal where there were far less people in the stadium & they actually ripped that cloth, cause it got caught on the seats, without people to be lifting it over them & they had less people actually walking it through. Anyway, she was spectacular to see live doing this! I was sitting right near that stage she was on too!!!!! Only about 5 seats between me & her! Was just amazing! I got to see her at the Paralympic games opening too, again she was fantastic, but didn't compare to this one! This was the best singing of the whole Olympics/Paralympics. Most emotional songs were a tie between this & Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning at the Closing ceremony, I got to go to that because of being a volunteer, no way I could have got a ticket otherwise, only the super rich connected people & corporates could get them, so hearing the whole stadium singing about "give it back" re Australia to Aboriginal people was incredibly emotional, given the politics of the time. Christine Anu changing the words of her island home to make Australia the island & the song be about all of us was super special too, but nothing compared to the vocals of this song

Amen ! I was there that Friday night in September 2000 - Vanessa Amorosi's performance was probably one of the greatest singing performance in the Olympics Games for Opening Ceremonies. A real Gold Medal Performance! God bless you Vanessa ! John Lockyer - Sydney Australia.

Hands down the best vocal performance I have ever heard. The biggest of public stages, the Olympics, witnessed by tens of thousands at the Olympic Stadium and seen by billions worldwide. She was only 19 years old. I saw it live on television and have never forgotten it. Truly a performance for the ages. Magnificently done Vanessa.

All performers at the Sydney opening ceremony were not performing live - this was covered extensively in the media at the time. This does not take away the fact that this is still her in the studio version - just that the vocals weren't live in the stadium as inferred.

I recently got the script for the first stadium rehersals for the 2000 olympics opening ceremony on ebay. In it were written mic cues for most of the performers on the night. While i can't say 100% sure that Amorosi performed live, I can say it is likely that there were multiple scripts for different segments and that her mic cues could be there. If you were to look at media stories closely, you would see that the miming was done by the orchestra but not the vocal performances and that some of the pieces were recorded by a different orchestra.

Vanesa is a great singer Australia has many great singers but are pretty much ignored because of being overtaken by America singers that cant sing. You should check out Dami im (Korean Australian) who came 2nd at Eurovision 2016 and she was sitting down most of the time. I'm pretty sure she wasn't singing live on the night - everyone seemed to mime at the 2000 Olympics, and it just *looks* like she's miming too, particularly around 8:30 mark. But of course it still came out of her mouth at some point so it's still an amazing vocal.

It’s been said At the last minute the powers to be on the night decide that they would not go live as the wind was so strong and it would play up with the mics and that this being the 2000 Olympic and the world was watching they wanted a polish performance as Australia was on show.. But some of the Performers have said they did sing live that night.. 😃

I hate that you say thinner. She is not singing thinner, she is singing brighter or lighter but not thinner. Thinner is commonly used for losing resonance or closing the throat. The sound is still very wide up there.

@@mikewhite3670 No. It was prerecorded in a LIVE SETTING. Meaning it actually was live, and was being recorded as she sang it. She said in an interview she was not supposed to go down at the end but she was running out of air to get that last note out.

​@@mikewhite3670 I was there for the dress rehearsal the night before, about 5 seats away from the stage she was singing on. Sounded live to me (although I really don't know how you would tell for sure). There was lots of stuff at the rehearsal that was not actually "live" & the rehearsal was recorded in case of problems with the real event, so that they could use the rehearsal footage in the place of the real stuff for all later non-live broadcasts, or directly in the case of weather or other problems that meant they lost the feed for some reason. On the screen during the rehearsal, we could see what they were recording as a back up if there was a problem with the live version & what they were not. For anything that was not, there was big writing saying "not for broadcast" over the screen, so all the official addresses, the athletes entering, the flags etc etc all had the "not for broadcast" message on the screen. There was also no Olympic rings on the cloth during the rehearsal & the dove we couldn't see, if it was there, cause there wasn't people holding the cloth up, the cloth actually ripped at the first rehearsal because of the lack of people. I didn't see that one, but we were all told about it & the whole stadium were told before the start of the rehearsal what that stand had to do with that cloth, so as to make it work. I was also at the closing ceremony (not rehearsal, not sure if they even had a rehearsal for that one). I was in the volunteers stand at the other end of the stadium for that one, the stand closest to where Midnight oil performed, yet it wasn't until I watched the recording of it on tv that I picked up on the proof of that being live that was evident there, with the lyrics screw up. From where I was in that stand for that ceremony, there's NO WAY I could have identified if anything was live or not! Same story with where I was sitting for the Paralympic ceremonies, absolutely no way I could have identified if it was live or not, other than at the one where I was super close to the stage Vanessa Amorosi was on & even then I really doubt I really could tell. Choir was easy to tell, cause they were right behind me & they cut in & out at various times as part of the rehearsal as opposed to real performance, plus I knew 2 of the kids in the kids choir & I also knew one of the marching band kids. Pretty sure from memory the choirs & marching band did also do studio stuff to supplement the live stuff or something, I can't really remember now, there were other more interesting parts of what they were doing that I took more note of than that. I call total BS on your being able to tell if it was live or not just by being present in that stadium though, just wasn't possible, even at the rehearsal, when there was far more chance to identify stuff like that, or at least where it would have probably stuck out like a sore thumb if it wasn't live & certainly that didn't happen

Jandi the Artsy-Rose the album version is not the same as the offical Sydney Olympic opening cermonu version. She sings the low notes in the album were as the Olympic Opening Ceremony version she sings higher notes in this section “Since all the history (Searching for a destiny) And searching for a destiny (Be there that we can be)Be there that we can be”

she does have a great voice but it doesn't have that wow factor anymore that I would think a singer needs to be considered unique. For example if she was to jump on to Americas got talent she would gain followers but not be remembered for her voice. she lacks star quality.
