Seeing the buggy collision for that map on virtual console reminded me of playing dk64, Diddy Kong racing, and I think I also got in a bit of time with Ocarina of Time. My N64 died one day, but about 3-4 days prior to it never turning back on no matter what. It made super jank collision in all the games I played before it died. I remember a friend came over after school one day and we tried Diddy Kong racing, we tried a few different maps before eventually finding one that had us in the hovercraft instead of karts and no big old holes in the road. It looked so amazing, I first even thought that it might have been a level I didn't get to yet (I wasn't a super amazing gamer at the time, so I didn't have everything unlocked on any game I owned) or maybe a "secret hidden map" (dev or test map, unreleased) but I never saw it again Other games I tried were just wacky, like cartridge tilting x100. Or a Bethesda game in alpha/beta stage of development 😂

So there's three different methods found for Isles Troff over the years, each unusable for a completely different reason... On the one hand, that's some pretty unfortunate luck. On the other, it makes me believe that a fourth one is still out there, waiting to be found. Maybe it's the one that will work. And if not, well, maybe number 5's the one.

One of our initial ideas when trying to figure out why it crashed on N64 was thinking that the floors and voids would also be there on N64 and that it would be crashing from that. We even had someone leave their n64 console on for 24 hours after entering Isles Troff n Scoff to see whether it just took an obscenely long time to load. Of course it didn't work, and their n64 console was incredibly toasty afterwards

The way the VC handles this glitch is kinda nutty. That map you showed of the void zones and janky new floor... no wonder it took 3 years to navigate it

I know this is an older video, but I'm not sure where else to post this. Has anyone else ever found that bug in the Mad Jack fight where if tiny uses her slide attack (Z + B) off the platforms and falls so that the game tries to reset her on the small rising platform, she'll still be sliding when she's set back onto the platform and she'll skid right off. This somehow bypasses the fall trigger and tiny can now run around on the floor during the mad jack fight. Jack keeps hopping around seemingly random platforms (not following tiny trying to land on her like he normally does) and never stops to fire a laser until tiny returns, and the platforms on the ground will carry her up when she stands on them. I found this as a kid and I thought it was the most amazing thing ever because you're not normally allowed to reach the floor during the fight. The way the game is totally fine with letting tiny run around on the floor and Jack just patiently waits for her to return makes me think that at an earlier point in development, tiny was allowed to fall to the floor and would have to climb her way back up, but maybe the reset was added because it was annoying to climb back up every time you fell.

Yeah, that's a known bug. Its not a side-effect of early development, but instead that Tiny is under 10 units below MJ, and so MJ will think that she has fallen off the edge and will keep resetting the phase

Godspeed on their methods of finding a proper “K.Rool Early”! A bit off-topic, I wonder how popular is a “fresh game” category of DK64 speedrunning. I keep seeing speedruns that has most of the content already unlocked, but I never seen a speedrun where the game is fresh and everything is locked.

101% is almost completely clean cart (the only instance of dirty cart used is having dk arcade high score on the cart to skip high score entry, which only saves a couple seconds). Any% Clean Cart is semi a thing. However it's similarity to just regular any% doesn't differentiate it enough for it to be considered "worth learning" for most

This stuff is absolute insanity to me. Like literally everything is in place for K. Rool early to work, its just that when setting a value for this whole thing, the devs chose a 0, causing the game to attempt to divide by 0 which causes all the craziness that you explained a lot better than I could. Ngl, I am hoping for a Switch Port of DK64, purely because I am curious if the different emulator on Switch will read this buggy T&S differently than the WiiU VC or Emulators did.

Well, you surely know there is another Troff n scoff for Hideout helm also! Shouldn't the game crash even when you enter that one, because no bananas are required there too? Can you explain please how the Helm Troff n Scoff works.

@Kronvall87 So that works because of 2 different systems at play. The requirement for Helm T&S is actually, internally, 1. This is because the next 2 bytes after the Isles T&S requirement is the Japes B Locker requirement, which is 1. The number gets rendered as 0 because there is a failsafe in the door number renderer which says that if the index for the level is greater than 7, set it to be 7. Helm index is 8, so it uses index 7 which is Isles. As such, it displays the Isles requirement which is 0

I love how at some point the programmer, after changing his mind about whether Troff n scoff should be how you access K Rool, decided to leave the code to warp you to K rool but also when it came time to fill out that banana requirement table just was like, meh, 0.
