Sabaton always takes historic events for their songs. This is about the the Last stand of the swiss guard protecting the pope from routing mercenaries attacking rome and the vatican. Nearly all of 189 swiss guards died while covering the escape of the pope against more than a thousand mercenaries.

Only with Sabaton you find yourself headbanging and jamming while hearing about annihilation, genocides and other exterminations. But in all seriousness this is such a great band, what they do, how they spread the awareness and immortalise historical events in their songs is truly amazing

Sabaton are neither religious nor political, and yet this song is practically a Catholic hymn. It is about one of the ugliest events in history, the 1527 sacking of Rome by Spanish soldiers and German mercenaries of the Holy Roman Empire. Most of the Pope's 189 Swiss Guards were killed in the fight, many on the steps of Saint Peter's Basilica, as they escorted the Pope to the Papal fortress Castel Sant'Angelo. Around 40 Swiss Guards held out there for about 30 days until coming to terms with their besiegers, basically buying them off. That month was an endless orgy of rape, torture, and murder as the Spaniards and Germans systematically looted the city. Well over 50% of the population of Rome was killed and it took decades for the city to recover. A pretty horrific story, but Sabaton's song about it is so joyous. Some other great Sabaton songs not about the two World Wars you should check out are Swedish Pagans (rampaging Vikings), Winged Hussars (mounted Polish angels of death), and Carolus Rex (Sweden's boy king who terrorized much of Europe).

@@svenneboll3984 I meant terrorized them on the battlefield. Odds meant nothing to Charles XII; and Sweden's enemies came to dread his appearance in battle. Sadly, like many other great commanders throughout history, Charles was eventually undone by his own amazing success. He came to believe too much in his own invincibility and expected that his faithful soldiers could achieve the impossible. Sabaton also chronicled the result of that in their song Poltava.

And for all us Tolkien fans, think of the Last stand of the Men of Dor'lomin: "But the brothers drew the remnant of the mighty men of the House of Hador about them, and foot by foot they withdrew, until they came behind the Fen of Serech, and had the stream of Rivil before them. There they stood and gave way no more." Despite the tragic loss of life, and just the plain horror of War, there is something so noble and heroic about a group of men who will pay, all that they have, to hold the line, in defense of the weak and powerless.

Taken from sabaton own homepage about this song,the story of the 189 brave soldiers in the Swiss guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527. Since Charles V, ruler of the holy roman empire couldn’t pay his troops they mutinied and forced their commander to lead them towards Rome where plunder was plentiful. When the invading force entered the vatican pope Clement VII escaped to Castel Sant’Angelo via passetto di Borgo. The few remaining guardsmen gave their lives on the steps to St. Peters Basilica.

I thought you'll react to the live version that was released a few days ago 😅 This song is great, super catchy, cool story, but it has something that always bothers me. In the lyrics, there's a part where they say Reincarnation and I'm like "but this is the catholic faith you're talking about! It is not reincarnation, it's resurrection that's promised!" The funny thing is, now I'm an atheist, but was raised catholic, so I'm pretty sure about that little bit. Keep Sabaton reactions coming 😁🤘
@bararobberbaron8594 жыл бұрын
"Dying for salvation with dedication No capitulation, annihilation Papal commendation, reincarnation Heaven is your destination" Yeah, ngl, I don't understand what reincarnation is doing in there :P Maybe the 'no' is meant to carry through? 'No capitulation, no annihilation, no papal commendation, no reincarnation' because you're going to heaven?
@EnDSchultz14 жыл бұрын
You’re overthinking it. Reincarnation works with the tempo and rhyme. The "No" doesn't carry through. That single line would be better defined with a semicolon or period. "No capitulation; Annihilation." As in, no surrender, fighting to the last.
