The DCX BASS is a Tone-Shaper and Drive pedal inspired by the UA 610 recording preamp. This retro console preamp is famous for adding vintage, analogue colour to a signal, as well as precise control of level and EQ. Push the gain harder and you get rich, harmonic saturation of the kind that makes analogue hardware a must-have in any present-day studio.
The DCX BASS reimagines this classic preamp as a tone-shaper and drive pedal for bass guitar, which can also be used as a direct preamp. It has a wide range of direct, clean and overdrive tones, EQ frequencies optimised for the instrument, and Adaptive Circuitry providing a treble response that reacts to playing dynamics.
The DCX BASS stays flat. Really flat. Because of its studio inspiration, it's designed to be as neutral as the best pro audio gear when desired. This pedal does not colour your signal unless you want it to.
The voice switch selects between a flat frequency response and two levels of treble roll-off. These can be useful for taming the top end with overdriven sounds. When the pedal is set clean, the treble roll-off is subtle but, as the pedal begins to overdrive, the roll-off becomes more pronounced. This allows a smooth transition between sparkling clean tones and warmer overdrive tones when playing dynamically or cleaning up from the guitar volume knob.
In OD MODE, the Adaptive Circuitry is disabled, meaning the VOICE switch’s treble roll-off is always active and does not vary with gain.
The DCX BASS’s EQ circuitry offers precise adjustment of frequencies specifically chosen for bass guitar, and the ability to boost bass and treble whilst retaining clarity and definition with overdriven signals.
Often, boosting bass with an overdriven signal can result in a mushy or indistinct tone as low frequencies overwhelm the drive circuit. Similarly, boosting treble with overdriven signals can result in a harsh tone, overemphasising the extra upper harmonics that overdrive creates.
However, the EQ circuitry in the DCX BASS has been specially designed to allow generous boosting of the bass and treble frequencies, without running into these problems, even with very overdriven sounds.

Every tone in the video was first recorded direct then reamped out of a Radial JD7, straight into the DCX BASS, then directly into a TASCAM Model 16 and into Logic Pro X. No post processing of any kind has been added with the exception of the real-time LF and HF control tone, in which subtle compression was used to help balance the volume. Compression settings are shown in the video alongside the tone. Other than that, these tones are 100% generated by the DCX BASS. No amp, no cab, no post EQ.
