How many times can a person get cancelled before they change? Not enough, apparently. This week, Sarah and Kendahl discuss the man that had an absolute chokehold on teens in the early 2010s of KZbin, Shane Dawson.

Another thing that now looking back is really disgusting is how Shane treated his friends at the time (Garrett, Andrew, and Drew) he was never outwardly mean towards them but he was very passive aggressive towards them and treated horribly.
@Poohbear5560
@Poohbear5560 Жыл бұрын
i agree but i feel like he was definitely mean to drew. Didn’t he talk about his appearance negatively a bunch? I think i remember that they were eating pizza once and Shane said something like “oh do you really think that’s a good idea” or “is that what you’re having for dinner?”.. so disgusting and it really affected drew

@Poohbear5560 I'm honestly not to sure because I haven't watched a Shane video in ages, but I wouldn't doubt he said that to Drew. Then what made it worse was when Drew was out of the picture he immediately made his next target Garrett with making comments like he's "childish" for simply just showing his love and passion in basically any kind of interest he had. I truly don't know how anybody could be mean to Garrett either because just from what we've seen of him online he doesn't have a mean bone in his body and he's just a big sweetheart.

@@Poohbear5560that was literally both of their brand * self deprecating humor * he also basically gave them all platforms. So interesting take ….
@deltaloraine
@deltaloraine Жыл бұрын
Yeah it was all self-deprecating humor, (I don’t think Shane knows how to do anything else) but in my experience when you keep making those kind of jokes about yourself 24/7, it actually starts to take hold and continuously tank your self esteem…and having friends joke as well can make it worse. It’s good to have a mix of jokes and make sure to be kind to yourself as well. So the environment they were creating together just ended up getting toxic, even if they didn’t mean for it to happen. I’m just glad Garrett got out of there and is making content with other channels like Watcher. He’s way too positive, creative, and fun loving to be dragged down by Shane.
@RealToWonder
@RealToWonder Жыл бұрын
yea, I am glad Andrew and Garrett got away from him and are having a blast being BFFs themselves. Of course, it was easy for Andrew to get away after he got his money. Props to Garrett for distancing himself before the blowup and around the time Shane started working with JS. It seemed like Garrett didnt like what he saw and fucked off.

I know alot more came out about the situation but i really believe that D'angelo Wallace video on Shane Dawson is the most succinct takedown and a premonition to how messed up the relationship of minor fans to early content creators was. (Colleen Ballenger now)

Would love an episode where ya’ll go over more people like Trisha paytas (problematic) and Jenna marbles (unproblematic) both ends of the spectrum. I miss Jenna so much. And I’m intrigued by the fact that Jenna is among the few influencers who are truly kind and genuine. What are the things she did RIGHT to achieve this status? Her humor was vulgar in her beginning, but she managed to never be canceled.
@isastu
@isastu Жыл бұрын
i think the one thing jenna did right especially towards the end take meaningful action to responding to her actions and not just the “i’m sorry feel bad for me i didn’t know and now i do” line most youtubers follow. like with the fish video, she made an apology, deleted the original video, and didn’t ignore something that other youtubers would.
@ThatDataLady

I mean Jenna technically got cancelled but it was just fkn heartbreaking. The the beginning her humor wasn’t vulgar for the time Her humor was if anything, progressive for the time. I mean… 3 Looks came out when I was in junior high and it was SO funny, my mom and I died laughing. All of her videos were hilarious. It was like 2011. She was on par with the rest of the world in 2011. And then for some reason everyone decided to drag the lake in 2020 like shit happened a decade ago and she has very very very much changed just like the rest of us. When I was 13 and she started making videos I TOO was mysoginist to a large extent. I had so much internalized mysoginy and hated being a woman….. well in my 20s I turned out to be the biggest women’s rights activist I know personally. We all change. I feel like Jenna got fked over.

Hearing Sarah talk about how they love it when people say their name and actually talk to them is WREGKELR:GKW:LESF. Sarah is such a funny and interesting person?! I could talk to them all day, or until one of us burnt out of socialness lmao. But yeah, I relate honestly. SARAH! I remember you wondering if you're autistic; you struggling with facial expressions is most definitely an autistic trait (not to say that you are, but) and god, I struggle with it so much too. I used to have people constantly telling me to smile when I was a kid and I haaaaaaaaated it, and it confused me so much. Don't force yourself into change, it's already exhausting battling through a neuro typical world as it is.

Something i learned that was life changing for me is that most abusers and people who are manipulative do not understand that they are being manipulative. They think theyre acting normal. I think that yes shane dawson portrays himself in those "real world of bla bla bla" docu series as this little thing that is just warm and forgiving, and yes that is to improve his image. Calling himself an empath etc. But i think thats because he genuinely hates himself and is disgusted by his past, and is desperately trying to proove constantly that hes not like that anymore. To himself and to others. The result is a horrible guy who is uwuw manipulating people into feeling pity for him because he cant handle his past with genuinity and a straight back.

Yeah, Shane does have this utter lack of self-awareness when it comes to how rich he is. In his recent videos he always says things like "why do rich ppl do this?!" "it's like when rich ppl say....", kinda mocking them. It seems by saying these things he distances himself from rich ppl to seem relatable or he truly does not think he's rich because there are some ppl in his LA friend circle who are richer than him. Even though he rides Tesla and has 20 ugly identical designer crocs and sneakers.

After watching, I would like to say I don't think Bobby burns was being outright mean or hateful to shane, he just said his content wasn't good and his merch was a cash grab and called out the blackface shane did (which shane conveniently left out of that series he did when he met bobby). He did a lot of reviews of content and movies before shane got a hold of him. Sort of like nick diramio does now. Then shane bought him a car, added him to the channel, Bobby moved to LA to do vlogs for shane and his own channel, then shane took him off the channel, and Bobby was left hanging and his mental health really took took a nose dive. I used to hate watch shane until recently but he not too long ago did a whole ass video about "the conspiracy" that is GENERIC BRANDS (gasp) and I was done even hate watching. Speaking of the "good" shane videos, they were good because drew and garrett were in them, and shane was a huge asshole to them on camera. Both have since completely dropped shane and are doing much better for themselves.

I am sure other people did similarly. The algorithm isn't screwing him. There are just more people who stand against monsters like him than he thinks there is. Edit: I love your guy's show so much, but when the ads become longer than 5 minutes at a time, I am absolutely skipping them. “blind carbon copy”. what james said is right. in a business/professional setting, it’s commonly used to email a mass group of people without exposing the email addresses to all recipients. kinda like “to all employees” at work. but in a “millennial” fashion, its become more of a way to be like petty or sneaky between friends. for example, you’d bcc your coworker on an email that y’all could laugh about later without the original recipient knowing. i hope that makes sense 😂 i’m only 27, but even trying to explain it makes me feel really old lol

When I was 14 my favorite KZbinrs were Kassem G and Nice Peter. Kassem G did a lot of comedy interviews and mmm looking back yeahhhh there was a bit of misogyny there he would make a lot of creepy jokes about women, but he also did a lot of interviews with pornstars where I got to know pornstars a bit more on a personal level which was pretty rare back then, and despite again misogyny jokes here and there, Kassem would usually make himself the butt of the joke, and he actually asked the pornstars random humanizing questions like what are your thoughts on cats or what is your favorite flavor of gum or something. Nice Peter was just a silly comedian guitar player he was the first adult that showed me you can be successful and be a kind, artsy, loving person. As a neglected misogynist boy it was a weirdly life changing thing for me to learn from those guys.

A lot of people prefer short form content over long videos and that is how people don’t get views….I still watch long vids though 🙋🏻‍♀️

I feel the typical Shane Dawson fan looks like an adult who never got over their middle school/ high school years. They still have the same lame humor, and probably still haven’t gone to therapy for the bullying they faced then and now think bullying Gen Z online makes them cool and edgy

In addition to those great points about his underlying psychology in the midst of the drama, there was also the very clear feeling of this all being a cash grab. Shane knew eyes were on him and wanted to squeeze every penny he could out of the situation and people didn't like that naked ambition.

Shane’s friends, drew monson, Garrett watts, Andrew, are great. Their content is so good. They’ve never spoken about Shane. Very adult actions on their part I LOVE them. So glad I was introduced to them but Shane can suck a fat one. I hope his kids are safe and happy

He hadn't made his career trying to be an asshole? Honey all his controversial stuff was before you loved him. They did so much research but how did they miss that part? You loved him when he had already shown his racist side.
