In sailing, we do a better version. I was taught to do this rolling hitch a bit differently... the wraps go higher and higher, not downwards. And on nylon or other slippery rope, I'd do many wraps. Then you can use this hitch for huge loads, not just your rainfly.
@ambidex
@ambidex Жыл бұрын
rolling hitch (edit: awning hitch) has to cross over itself so that you can finish tying it under load, whereas the knot in the video is nearly impossible to tie under load. it's kind of the worst version of this kind of knot, I wish the Scouts program that has pushed tautline for decades would have used mid-shipman's hitch which is the knot people are referring to above where you go higher and higher. And the early scout books used to teach mid-shipman's but called it tautline, before being revised at some point.

Also called the rolling hitch. One of the most useful knots i know, use it all the time like magic. But your final loop should go over the T line and wrapped in the opposite direction this keeps the double loop for the friction not in the right line for pressure. The way your trying it will cause it to loosen under vibration like high winds or while highway driving, like I said I've used this knot alot, including tying it incorrectly there for a bit.

I've tied it both ways but the way tied in the video is technically correct for what is called the taught line hitch and i have used it to hold my slack line tightly when securing my kayaks to the roof of my car and it doesn't loosen when going down the road, that being said it's not the best knot for holding loads. You can also give it additional half hitches at the end to make the knot more secure, the adjustable grip hitch is more secure as well but tying the taught line hitch with the last half hitch in the opposite direction is admittedly very similar to the prusik with one less wrap so it stands to reason it would also be a secure knot. However if you want a secure knot for loads the best is definitely the truckers hitch.

@@joestevenson5568 I know, and believe me it wasn't the weight bearing portion, just what I used to tie everything off and make all the lines taught. i was using a 50' piece of 1100 cord wrapped between my truck and a car like five or six times. And then I tied all the strands together with one taught line. Had to cut the knot apart and a few strands snapped but I got the car unstuck.

I acctually remember using this knot to tighten my shorts. I needed a solution because the the common bow knot doesn't adjust; when I needed to use the bathroom in a hurry, I didn't like how long it took to untie the knot and then pull down the shorts. I needed a solution where the pants could adjust easily, but also hold when I needed them to. After experimenting with the strings, I ended up creating this knot and it worked perfectly.

I was taught this as a kid (my Dad) and relearned fresh out of college. I don't remember exactly how my Dad did it because he showed me only once, after that I only saw him play with line and lure and it was done like the one-time explanation was all I needed to last me a lifetime. My friend taught it with 5 to 7 wraps before the final splice and called it a fisherman's knot. To this day, I don't know who was less competent or who had the least amount of teaching skill, or the misinformation taught to them. Thank you for your clarification and now I must run- try it and play with it 50 times so it is engraved in my mind. It's amazing how the disinformation gets passed along, I already forgot the name of the knot...

I'm just having a visual of being out camping and people that don't know how to tie a knot my uncle showed me this knot particularly and I love it. I just like the way you explained it so simple my uncle would just do it really quick he's like okay did you get it I'm like no could you do it again no you should have paid more attention okay thanks. so maybe because of the coffee the wake and bake on a Saturday with some good herb. I'm just picturing somebody in the forest having a problem putting up their tent and crying about it. Then all of a sudden out of the bushes you jump out and you say have no fear Knot man is here!🤣 Thoughts I have that my friends tell me I should just keep to myself the like some thoughts don't need to be out loud. This idea brought to you by Mary Jane 👍🏽😹

I've done similar, but with a couple of cross and go under loops before the final locking loop. Not sure if unnecessary or worse or better, but it held the tent canvas in shape, so it worked.

I was a tree trimmer for many years, and I use that for my climb line, but I use two loops in the second rap. Good job.

Oh wow, useful! I use a variation on this where the working end passes through not just its most recent loop but the first two as well, & it's great especially for being really resistant to slippage for use cases where I only want to adjust it sometimes, but it's also kind of a pain to make. I think the knot you show will be plenty fine for most applications that I've been using mine for, lol

Im a rigger for the shipyards and we use the same configuration but on stationary components like metal round stocks to make pick-points and bridals. Essentially its a Dead Turn inside of a Clove Hitch. We call them Grave Hitches. When adequate tension is applied the knot will never slip.. the line would snap befor that knot does. Super useful

Learned this knot in the early 70's in Boy Scouts as knots are a requirement. Used them to hold tents to stakes on every camping trip

I'm horrible with knots, but after 20 years of not fishing i still remembered how to tie the palomar fishing knot. The only knot for fishing line you will ever need to remember.

This knot is used when there're no adjusters. I used it before for pitching tents and mounting flagpoles during school camps. It's a pleasant refresher. Thank you. I just don't know how name it.
