PHILIPPIANS 2 - What does HUMILITY look like?
Hey everyone welcome back to part 2 of our short series on the book of Philippians. We are taking one chapter a day and choosing a passage of scripture, making some observations and then looking at how we can apply this to our lives. Today we are in chapter 2 and I want to focus on verses 1-11. We are gonna break these 11 verses down into two parts. Verses 1-4 we will call “The Principle” and verses 5-11 we will call “The Picture.”
1. The Principle (v. 1-4)
a. If you have any encouragement from being a Christian; if you’ve been comforted at all from the love of God, if you have the Spirit in you and if you have any tenderness or compassion in you then have the same mindset that Jesus Christ had.
b. Do not be selfish; don’t do things with a selfish motivation
c. Consider others as more important than yourself
d. Don’t consider only things that are interesting to you but look into what is interesting and important to others.
2. The Picture (v. 5-11)
a. Now Paul says, “I’ve given you the principles but now I want to show you what this looks like by giving you a picture of selflessness and humility.”
b. He begins by saying, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” So he is encouraging us to apply what we are getting ready to read to all of our relationships such as our family, spouse, children, co-workers, church members, etc.
c. Mindset #1 - Sacrifice - “rather, He made Himself nothing” - The Bible teaches that Jesus was in heaven, a totally perfect environment. But He chose to sacrifice His perfect environment and position as the son of God to come to earth and be a carpenter. He was willing to give up something that was valuable to Him.
i. QUESTION: If we say we want to be like Jesus we must challenge ourselves in terms of how willing we are you to sacrifice your time or your money for God and for those we are in relationship with?
d. Mindset #2 - Servant - “by taking the very nature of a servant…” - It’s enough that Jesus was willing to sacrifice but He didn’t come to sit on a throne and have people serve Him. Instead He was always serving others (teaching them, healing them, raising from the dead, feeding them, washing their feet, etc.)
i. QUESTION: Do I look to be served more than I look for opportunities to serve others? Do I see myself as being above doing certain things when people ask me or do I have the attitude of a servant?
e. Mindset #3 - Submission - “by becoming obedient to death.” - So what we see here is that in order for Jesus to come to earth He first had to be submissive to His Father. Now remember, Jesus is just as much God as God the Father and yet He submitted His will for the will of the Father.
i. QUESTION: How willing are you to submit to people in relationships (husband, wife at times, your boss, it could be the flight attendant on the plane who tells you to put your laptop away) or do you always have to be the one in control having people submit to you?
f. Mindset #4 - Suffering - “even death on a cross” - Jesus was willing to suffer so that we might have eternal life. Sometimes we are taught that the Christian life is supposed to be easy but Jesus’ example shows that at times we may have to suffer.
i. QUESTION: How much are you willing to suffer in your relationships with other people?
So, what does it look like to be like Jesus? It involves being willing to sacrifice what’s valuable to you, serving others, a submissive attitude and a willingness to suffer if need be and the blessing is that it says that God exalted Jesus Christ. And if He rewarded Jesus for having these attitudes I trust He will do the same for you!

What I've learned from this is that I'm not humble at all. Perhaps I should stop and take a breath and review what my priorities and goals are, and rearrange my life so that the rest of things fit instead of fitting God into my life and most importantly I have to learn how to not drift away when I'm suffering, I really need to grow up in such aspects.

Great teaching brother Allen. I just want to keep it real because you do. Who the heck wants this? Humility in todays world its almost funny. To be seen as weak, a doormat, taken advantage of submissive in today's world why, more important how? These are the things I use to feel. Why does the lord want me to be humble in a world that will see me as weak & probably take advantage of me. I use to believe this & I realized this was exactly what the devil wanted me to feel & believe until I started to trust Jesus example. If my Lord could be humble to a sinning & evil people & trust God the father then I realized I could do the same. When I truly discovered this that's when the Lords power truly came into my life. The presence & power of the holy spirit in me started to live the life of christ that I in my flesh couldn't do. I started to experience His power inside me. I couldn't do it but Jesus Holy Spirit inside of me started to live the Christian life that I couldn't do for myself. When I decreased in my body His presence inside of me increase & when I realized it's the power of christ in me to live the Christian life that I cant do in my flesh it all started to click. So anyway great teaching please keep teaching the word of God simply & correctly. Love you brother.

Humility: 1) What am I willing to sacrifice? 2) How much am I willing to serve? (Do I see myself serving others/putting others before myself?) 3)How much am I willing to submit (to others)? Or am I the one that needs to be in control and for others to submit to me? 4) How much am I willing to suffer (for others, gospel message... ect) Blessing: If we follow Jesus Christ’s example, and the father exalted Christ, in due time, He will do the same to us! (Humility=blessing) ❤️❤️ God bless you Allen Parr!

Same here, do you think this is a stage in becoming a Christian? Feel like humility is what the core of love is. Revelation, being that because we love one another and realize that we all fall short of the kingdom of God. I wonder the level of humility Christ had; it boggles my mind.

I have realized in my spiritual walk, if you are not humble enough, God will give you a situation, experience etc. that WILL humble you!! Happened to me several times to the point I can clearly see where I was, to where I am now--BIG difference! I suggest humbling yourself if possible, the lessons you learn from an experience you go through are usually rough!!

Hi Allen, first off you are truly a blessing and this message in particular is on point with my situation. I've recently lost my job in the most undesirable way but yet, if I wouldn't have been submissive to my situation things would've have turned out much worst. It's vague but humility and long suffering has been the story of my life and it seems like without cease and I feel like I'm not initiating humility properly in a way that reflects Jesus'. I know that all things work for the good for those he loves and I know he loves those he corrects.

Please do more of these studies. I love how you break it down and talk about practical ways of out working His word. It’s disheartening listening to other videos of you speaking about other topics to do with different leaders and music. Although you do bring very valid points and also would agree with a lot of them and definitely makes me listen better. I feel that the comments section is what lets it down and it lets in the gossipers and I see so many judgemental comments and people playing God by deciding who is a believer or not.

Do you apply verses fit to your circumstances, the themes that are bothering you or whatever you feel happening in your body, soul and spirit? Do you apply the blood of Jesus and put the sin under his feet? Did you clean up your channels, your music, your videos, art, your clothing and the like? Are you consistent in prayer? 1:33 - yeah....I do have to admit one cool way Jesus Christ's Humility helps reach the poor. As amazingly and immeasurably LARGE as He is, He will get on both knees to lift others up. It is inspiring to see Jesus Christ do that. And for not only His followers, but the entire EARTH he gave humanity and perhaps beyond SUPER USEFUL political and other teachings this year in Seattle. He SUFFERED like I've never seen before to make this a reality on Earth. His Compassion is way greater than mine obviously.

God says in Quran about truly devoted christians "...and nearest among them in love to the believers will you find those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant. This is because there are worshipful priests and monks among them, and because they are not arrogant. And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger you see that their eyes overflow with tears because of the Truth that they recognize and they say: 'Our Lord! We do believe; write us down, therefore, with those who bear witness (to the Truth). And why should we not believe in Allah and the Truth which has come down to us when we do fervently desire that our Lord include us among the righteous?" 5;82-85

Sir, may I ask? Can I pray to God of how I am going to die but still accept if His will is different?

Philippians 2:1-11. What would the world be like if humility was still a weakness? In what relationships can you imitate Jesus' humility today?

Does being obedient include not blowing past a school bus with flashing lights 🚨, NOT blowing through but actually stopping at a red light or NOT ignoring the red octagon on that aluminum pole 🛑 ? Practical application of the Scriptures is key. 😉 9-14-22

Ecclesiastes 7:5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. Genesis 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. Psalms 15:2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. Isaiah 2:2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Jude 1:8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 2 Corinthians 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. 2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Revelation 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
