I was raised in a Pentecostal church, my grandmother spoke in tongues, she was an incredible woman but I remember when I was a teen our church was trying to get all the teens to speak in tongues. They would tell us to just pray and start uttering gibberish and the Holy Spirit will take over. Most of us could not accomplish this and we were told that we just weren’t “filled with the Holy Spirit” and we needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This troubled me greatly as I felt disconnected from God. I left that church once I became an adult and found one I felt was connecting me with Jesus Christ and his teachings, a bible based teaching church. My family chastised me terribly for “leaving the faith”. I tried to explain that I was still faithful to Christ and his teachings, just not in their church but they never forgave me for “abandoning” the church. Are we now worshipping the church over Jesus Christ himself? This has left me wondering if I was raised in a cult.

I was raised in a Pentecostal church. About a year ago I started praying to God that if he exists he may reveal himself to me so that I can truly believe. I prayed like that because I didn't feel convinced of our church and I was getting older and thinking seriously about my religion and if it is really true. I continued to go to church but because of my doubts still praying every night that God may reveal himself and convince me that he really is present in our church. 4-5 months passed and I was at church as usual. Listening to the sermon when the preacher looked and me and through the holy spirit prophesied to me my deepest prayer and doubts word for word. I never talked to anyone about my doubts. Just me and God knew. Because the holy spirit spoke to me so personally and encouraged me that God listened to my prayers I was saved in that day. In his grace God has made me a new person with a TRUE and REAL DESIRE to serve him and obey him. Before I was reborn keeping a Christian life was not satisfying but now I love learning about God and what he did on the cross I have a purpose and every day I see his love and patience. My church closed last year, and I visited a Pentecostal church a couple of times, where I attended their Bible study on a Wednesday when they happened to be teaching about the Holy Spirit. In the middle of the Bible study, a woman said that one time she asked for prayer and the person she asked to pray said that she "had the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit told her not to pray for her because she needed to go through what she was going through." The girl really thought that being denied prayer was what she had needed and no one in the study said anything to object. Having already heard about a half an hour of Holy Ghost teaching from charismatics, I couldn't hold back my own objections when it came to the Holy Spirit supposedly telling someone not to pray and the whole class going along with it. Could it have been the Spirit within me that made me stand up, say "This is crazy! The Holy Spirit doesn't tell you NOT to pray for someone" and walk out, never to return? Lol. I'm saddened by the fact my own father still follows word of faith teachings, but all I can do is pray for him.

But God lead me to a penicostal church. And it was their that Lord showed me that my spiritual gifts were from him and not evil. God spoke to me and said: When I sent my son into this world, (I) gave gifts to the apostle's. If they needed them then, then they are needed now, for a time will come when the world become much worse and you are going to need them. That was over 35 years ago when I was lead to that church and as I look back, I see God's hands in everything that he has been preparing me for. For we fight not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in high places. And the only way to fight against spiritual wickedness is by Gifted Spiritual Righteousness. Using the Spiritual gifts given to us. Spiritual Armor, approved by Jesus, Ordained by God, and manifested by the Holy Spirit. Unspiritual people Can Not understand the Spiritual mysteries of God. Because God Will Not reveal them to unspiritual people... He designed it that way, for His purpose..

If those believers who didn't speak in tongues, were not saved, Paul would have said so. If you read Acts 5:33b, it reads "...and so also is the HOLY GHOST Whom God has GIVEN to THEM that OBEY Him." So we see, there is the Holy Ghost, given at salvation for obedience to God's call to them, and the GIFT of the Holy Ghost, given in tongues. Also, when we continue to obey God, it shows we have the Holy Ghost. God does not give the Holy Ghost to them that don't obey Him. They stop obeying God, the Holy Ghost leaves. Pray and then obey, He will come back to you. The Holy Ghost manifested in salvation, and then manifested in the gift.

If someone gives a word in tongues, there has to be an interpretation. Otherwise, it really doesn't do anyone any good. The biggest caution I have with charismatic churches is that many will start operating in the realm of feelings and from a "Word from the Lord" without making sure that what they are "feeling" lines up with scripture. I have experienced speaking in tongues myself, so I believe in that gift, but for me it is my prayer language. Not something that I exercise in public. The other problem is too many fake tongues, because people don't read the Bible and have no idea what tongues actually is. They say stuff like "It's a heavenly language." Or pushing the idea that anyone can speak in tongues when the Bible is clear that this is not a gift that everyone gets.

Tongues for personal edification is limited to your personal prayer life and is not to distract when your with others in a church service. I grew up in an Assembly of God church. We had people speaking in tongues during worship service. Most of the time long after the service had ended. On those days or nights when nobody left. And we just worshiped. The church would be silent and wait for interpretation, normally from someone else. It was a beautiful thing to be a part of.

Yeah, the AofG, being one of the first and the biggest Pentecostal denomination (I believe) is probably very exemplary, and I think most of the so-called "abuses" occur in more congregationalist churches. It helps to have "overseers" which are not the same as elders or pastors, as the Calvinists have declared since IDK when. That the "evidence" of the gift of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues, I believe is a false doctrine. It came from good intentions. The early "apostolic" revivalists like Parham simply asked questions? What was the sign? What did you experience? So many reported breaking out in tongues, that these men of God merely concluded that was evidence. Because scripture rather clearly questions, "Do all speak in tongues?" we get this endless pushback from fundamentalists who are de facto cessationists (believers of the cessation of apostolic sign gifts) if not de jure ones, like the so-called Reformed (Calvinist) crowd. All this is shameful disunity and carnality. Two wrongs don't make a right. Sometimes the answer to "which side is right?" is both (or neither). Thank you for a wise comment. they're too rare. May revelation, joy, peace, mercy, health, prosperity and power in the Gospel abide upon you and your household of faith this holiday and always, according to this amazing promise: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved, you and your house."

While at deer camp a couple weeks ago, I listened to a charismatic preacher on the radio take Paul's admonition about speaking in tounges as an encouragement to desire more to speak in tongues. It is so astonishing how horribly scripture can be taken out-of-context. What today's charismatics have forgotten (or maybe aren't being taught) is that the gift of tongues wasn't simply in the speaking. In Acts 2, all the people there heard Peter speak in their own _native languages_ . In other words, _nobody_ heard him speak an unknown tongue. There is no need for tongues if everyone speaks the same language (1 Cor 14:28).

Great job on this touchy topic Alan! I went to a small group conference at our church where we all came together and went through a series of steps to being ‘baptized in the Spirit’. They made EVERYONE attempt to get their ‘Heavenly Language’. Tapping my chin, I was told I was not trying and trusting hard enough. I babbled awkwardly a few words but it didn’t feel Spirit led. I am a long time Christian, and have read the Bible through and through, and never felt the urge of the Holy Spirit to worship in this way. It felt so FAKE! She dismissed me discouraged that I wasn’t compliant, and said she’d be praying for me… THIS right here is where ‘church hurt’ begins. That dismissal broke my heart. I am very intimately connected with the Holy Spirit, although this made me doubt myself. I strongly believe I don’t need my own ‘Heavenly Language’ to be more connected. And if I did, then the Lord would’ve certainly gave it to me. Thankfully, it never stopped my husband and I from pursuing a church, as church hurt has caused many to stop going all together. We just moved and are still looking for a Bible based church that teaches more about God’s word and less about our secular world. Hard to find these days. But we won’t give up that search. God says we need fellowship. So we will continue our pursuit.

Hi Shey scary to see how much of this is going on, we found a Church by listening to the Word of some good preachers online and guide us over a few bumpy rides until we ended up where we are. Church hurt is real, I don’t think my husband has really recovered; we are still on the journey to being part of the new church family but it wasn’t easy! We’ve all got so many scary stories to tell. When our eyes were opened and we were leaving, I was told to “let my husband go, and stay at the same church” and I was like what? What about submitting to the husband and let alone the fact that I wanted to go as well, very strange churches you have out there, we must remain vigilant. I have been in a church that disregarded Paul’s instruction and encouraged a sea of noise from the congregation. At that time in early my walk I allowed them to pray for me to receive the gift of tongues. When nothing was happening I was encouraged to “start speaking baby talk to loosen up my tongue”. I thankful declined. I have visited a main line AoG church where there was a spontaneous tongue from the back of the room. Everyone got quiet. It sounded (from my experience) like an actual language I didn’t recognize and immediately following it there was an interpretation. The interpretation was like a beautiful poetic psalm of praise. No, it didn’t have any new unbiblical doctrine it just left you in awe of God. Once while living in Asia, co-laborers encouraged me to seek the gift for personal prayer time. I asked for it. I felt something well up inside and I merely let it flow from my mouth. Maybe it was just the Holy Spirit’s way of dealing with my skepticism, because I’m a slow talking midwesterner and my lips were moving faster than the micro machine commercial guy. It may have only lasted a few minutes but I was so edified by the reality of how close God is to us who are in Christ Jesus. He has chosen to literally dwell inside us.

Smoke machines, lights, and staging that will put any major concert to shame. I had no idea how bad it was till God through His loving grace opened my eyes. When I was in college at Oral Roberts University in the 1970s we had a required class on "The Holy Spirit In The Now". The class was on video from a previous semester when it was taught live by Oral Roberts. The chairman of the Department of Undergraduate Theology, Dr. Howard Ervin, was on the question and answer discussion panel at the end of one of the classes, and this verse came up for discussion. Dr. Ervin explained that in the early church they had two types of meetings - believers meetings that only the baptized believers attended, and other public meetings that anyone could attend. He explained that this verse covered the instance where in a believer's meeting, an unexpected visitor might attend and hear everyone speaking in tongues, and indeed think they were crazy. The reason this question came up was because it was a common practice in early charismatic meetings for the entire congregation to sing harmoniously in tongues as an expression of worship. There weren't so much so-called "messages in tongues" in those days, but there was lots of "singing in the spirit" (singing in tongues). I came from a Classical Pentecostal background (Assemblies of God) and this was totally new to me. Since I was already Pentecostal, I understood what was happening, but I had never actually heard it before I went to ORU. In the case of the ministers you showed here in this video, my personal opinion is that they are all "showboating" - depending on the audiences' ignorance of Scripture to make themselves look spiritually superior, as if they have a special direct line to God that no one else present has, thus propping up their perceived authority. I think the key to all of this is found in 1 Cor. 14:2, "For he who speaks in a tongue, speaks not unto men but unto God, for no man understandeth him, he utters mysteries with his spirit." Two fundamental things I get from this verse are - 1. Tongues are spoken to God, not to man (even in a public meeting). 2. Tongues are communicating with God with our spirit, rather than with our minds. Why is this valuable and important? It is important because we are spirit-beings, with a soul, living in a body; and there is a real spiritual realm that exists right alongside our natural realm, and we need to learn how to communicate with God spirit-to-Spirit, rather than soul-to-Spirit. We were created to have direct fellowship and intimate communication with God, and the manifestation (its not a gift, its a manifestation) of tongues enables us to communicate with God through our spirit, bypassing the limitations and prejudices of our human minds that still need to be renewed. When I was pastoring, I would often pray in tongues when I was praying with people at an altar, however, I always took the microphone away from my mouth whenever I did so, because I understood that tongues were not to men but to God. I remember Evelyn Roberts testifying one time of having a friend in the Methodist Church who was talking to her about tongues. The friend asked Evelyn if she could speak in tongues right then and there. Evelyn replied, "I could, but I won't, because tongues are not meant for public display but for communicating with God." What I can't understand is why people never seem to get the point that tongues are simply a communication tool using your spirit to speak rather than using your mind. I've often taught in 40 years of ministry that the only difference between praying in tongues and praying in your native language is the source of the vocabulary. When you pray in your native language, you pray with words stored up in your mind. When you pray in tongues, you pray with words provided to you by the Holy Spirit. That is the only difference between praying in tongues and praying in your native language.

I'm pentecostal and will always be I've felt enough and seen enough in my church to know that there is nothing else like it anywhere else I'm glad at our church they speak like this the Kenneth Copeland and some of those other clips were unreal but when you are lost in the spirit and let God move and speak through you it doesn't matter if it sounds crazy if it's real, you quinch the spirit when you try to hold it back this shouldn't be a dividing issue at all, there are so many Christian KZbinrs that spend more time calling out "false pastors" and false practices, but real is real and if you know it and feel it in your heart that's what matters .

It's simple..go to youtube pages of charismatics and pentecostals and check out their videos and go to the comment sections. People testifying about awesome miracles and blessing God has done for them, through those ministries and people being saved. You will also see the cessationists and Christian atheists hating on their videos and calling for the ministry to repent for believing in the gifts of the Spirit. I think to myself, you people see that people's lives are changed towards Christ and you are calling for that ministry to repent, meanwhile if I flip to pages like this or some others, I don't get those testimonies. I get someone's doctrines...it makes me wonder sometimes how things would look if ad revenue was not involved and you just had to do a video with out pay.

I've had many encounters with those who are from protestant, Pentecostal and other man-made denominations that i pray for their own conversions and breakaways from those theology teachings and the spiritual, mental and verbal abuse I've copped from them is horrifying and truly devastating. I'm a proud Roman Catholic who believes in the theology of Catholicism and we are the only one true and holy apostolic church that was built from the apostolates that served Christ and wrote scriptures and letters which helped formed the church together after Jesus said to Peter go now build my church and spread the good news around the world during the resurrection of our Lord and when he visited the apostles one last time, The Christian denominations loved to target the Catholics because when they started up their ow churches, theologies and divorces from the Catholic church they removed 7 books from the bible that talks about Catholic theology and early church periods and made their own interpretations as they had this hatred, opposition, aggression and bitterness to the Catholics and broke so many laws and rules while they did that which turned into an absolute mess and mass persecutions of Catholics and non-believers joining them and that to me is straight up extremism as it goes against the teachings of the bible the religion and philosophies of Christianity altogether. The Blasphemes attacks they do to Catholics, Mother Mary and the Angels and saints is truly insulting and full of heresy they will do anything to get their own way as they don't believe in free will where we Catholics do because we believe that anyone can go to heaven regardless of how they live their own lives unlike those other denominations as they are all brainwashed and full of extremism and hypocrisy (especially the Pentecostals as i see them as a cult majority of the time). Catholics have different ways of celebrating the mass and community services we do believe in charismatic praise but not how those denominations do it as they take it to an extreme level and define the meanings of the church and how the services should be done I'm all for praise and worship charismatic concerts and gigs gatherings but leave the mass and the church alone altogether and don't abolish the sacraments, rosary's divine mercy's and prayers we are obligated to do as they are mentioned in the bible and the church only has the authority to forgive sins, cast out demons and transpose scripts not us as we don't have that authority and free will to do so through salvation as it's forbidden to do so. If you really want to learn and understand the ways of Almighty God, Our Lord Saviour Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit then Catholicism is the way to go and don't feel pressured to learn it all at once in this life we have eternity to do so and anyone can go to heaven whether you believe in God or not and we all do have to go through purgatory before going to heaven as we need to be free and cleansed from our sins as we live in sinful nature which is perfectly normal otherwise we wouldn't know what's good and bad and it's a personal journey for everyone and for us only between God and ourselves and no one has authority or say where we go with our destiny's as God is the only one who says so through the judgment stages and purgatory is better than hell as you're one step closer to heaven and anyone who dismisses purgatory and its existence are foolish and blind delusional idiots who don't know any better themselves and would rather spread false lies and fear monger those wrongfully about the teachings of the Bible and our faithful relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Thank you, my friend, for sharing and raising awareness with this subject and I pray for their conversions out of those false theologies and whether they do convert to Catholicism or not within this life I pray that they shall be healed and cleansed from their sins in purgatory and that they make it to heaven as it's our moral duty as Catholics to do so for Almighty God and you take good care of yourself and keep up the great work. Amen and God Bless :)

I got saved in a Pentecostal church when I was a teenager, bur out in my early 20s bc I was invited to a Baptist church and they explained to me what speaking in tongues was. It was explained to me that God gives us a special ability to learn languages fast. And i believed that bc my mother tongue is Spanish, but I was able to learn English fast and im very fluent in it. Of course, through the years I have wondered if the explanation I was given at the Baptist church was that simple. Brother Parr, you really explained it to me today how it really works! If speaking in tongues is a real gift then you shouldn't have to fake it or make it up or start speaking gibberish in the hopes that the holy spirit will guide your tongue. If it's meant for me to speak in tongues, then God will have to initiate it. I'm not going to be guilty of false fire.

Thank you for your boldness in using Scripture to support your conviction and to exhort us in love. This issue along with the issues of women preachers and "pastors" and what the Bible clearly has to say about tithes and offerings are blatantly ignored or grossly twisted like a pretzel because a lot of so-called church leaders simply do not care what God has said but are gonna do whatever they want and the people in the congregation just go with it. Also, in a lot of congregations church disincline and comparing what the preacher says to what the Bible says is non-existent because a lot of people in attendence lack a thirst for growth in holiness and true intimacy with God through diligent reading snd studyinh of the word and it's really tragic.

Scripture interprets scripture and throughout the book of Acts, the original church, when someone received the baptism of the Holy Ghost they spoke with tongues as an outward initial evidence that something supernatural just happened......real tongues not fake. Most in this thread and Alan do not understand the simplicity of scripture that the gift of tongues which is not for everybody and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, which is for everybody(Acts 2:39) are 2 different things. Yes, there should be order but in sovereign moves of the Spirit, many more can according to scripture speak in tongues. Notice there was no interpretation in those experiences in Acts, because it was not the gift of tongues in operation, it was the infilling of the Holy Ghost. Context.....I Corinthians 12 the subject from there thru chapter 14 is spiritual gifts. Alan and most of this thread is an example of not understanding how to rightly divide the word of God. I agree and disagree with some of the things you mentioned. Yes there have been pastors that may have miss used this gift in church and services. However, you didn’t completely show the full clip of Pastor Kenneth Hagin’s video. What he was doing was letting Holy Spirit minister to the church through him. The Holy Spirit later gave an interpretation to all of tongues he spoke following your clip. So that video was taken out of context because Pastor Hagin used tongues correctly. Sometimes, during services the Spirit can have such a powerful move that believers simply can not hold back themselves from speaking utterances from the Holy Spirit. I have experienced this in a couple of churches. Also, believers don’t always receive interpretation when speaking in tongues. Same with how a believer doesn’t always receive interpretation when they’re praying on their own. Does that mean that they need to stop praying in tongues? No. They are strengthening their spirit. We can’t put limits on the move of the Holy Spirit. The clips you showed of other believers speaking without interpretation, is not what they make up by their own minds. Do some people? Yes. But we can’t make that assumption for all. The Bible says that tongues is a mystery that is uttered and brought to you by the Holy Spirit. So if someone is filled and is driven to speak, whether with interpretation or not, they need to let it out. I agree however, churches should not instigate tongues as a mandatory practice or the pastor shouldn’t speak tongues without interpretation. However, if during worship time the church is filled with the Spirit’s anointing, believers shouldn’t be stopped from speaking in tongues, even if there isn’t interpretation. Because they are still edifying themselves and they may even be worshipping God in diverse tongues. If this was bad God wouldn’t have allowed His Spirit to move in such a manner. We have to remember, WE CANT CONTROL TONGUES. It’s a gift. God granted it and He controls how it moves.

In my church we speak in tongues and I love it, there’s an understanding that if the pastor or a person starts speaking in tongues the next thing they say is the translation and it would be a powerful message, or they’ll immediately go to someone and start praying for them and you know it’s spirit lead. If some starts speaking in tongues and it’s drawn out or distracting then a leader would approach them and tell them to stop. I agree that they are fakers out there but when tongues are used responsibly then they can be a powerful tool in the service.

Even tho some people did talk about it and wondered why I wasn't able to do it.. I never let that get to me. now speaking In tongues .. I can see the immense benefits and growth in my walk w/ God. Whenever I pray with an unbeliever/newly converted christian and the Holy Spirit leads me to pray in tongue (which in this case is rare or 10-20% of the prayer time) I always take time to explain what is about to happen. people who force tongues on other.. didn't clearly understand something and at least need prayer! someone like you SHOULD know this.. I´ll pray that God reveal Himself more to you.

How come you pray with an unbeliever/newly converted Christian in tongue? They can't understand.

@@johnsmit5999 please read again! But this time slowly. I said when I pray with them.. if the Holy Spirit leads me in tongues (WHICH IS RARE)! I always explain beforehand what is about to happen! Everything I do, I do by the H.Spirit. He would lead me in a prayer in tongues (again it is rare).. if the other person would mind. No one has till now.

@@Esnelle242 Thank you for expounding! I am glad that everything you do is by the Holy Spirit. I hope to be like that one day. I just wondered what the benefit would be for you or the other person to do that.

@@johnsmit5999 whenever I pray with newly converted Christians or a non believer.. and the Holy Spirit leads me to speak in tongue (which is rare I repeat!) it is often because in that moment either: 1. I feel an oppression trying overcoming me, the enemy voice in my head trying to discourage me from continuing with the prayer.. in that instance the prayer in tongues gives me strength.. as I am talking through the H.Spirit to the Father directly.. a prayer that even the demons can’t understand. The power and fire that overcome me in that moment is indescribable. 2. It is a message that I get for the person in front of me because I also get the interpretation.

Great video on this topic, I agree with what you said 👍 When i started seeking God over 4 yrs ago I started off in a pentocostal charismatic church. I lasted 5 weeks and during that time I was pressured by the church to pray for the gift of tongues and eventually I made myself believe that had the gift of tongues and didn't realise I was faking it (that's how much I was deceived by them). I used to cry to God in my prayer asking him to reveal the truth about this doctrine cause I was not settled about it one bit and so I knew something was wrong with their teachings on this topic. During those 5 weeks I brought my bestfriend there who was an unbeliever only to see the most confused look on her face when she first walked into the church one sunday and saw the whole congregation screaming in the air babbling sounds. It was like the sound of bunch of roosters arguing. And my bestfriend was so confused as she didn't think it was normal for a church setting to be like that. It almost put a stumbling block in her way to coming to Christ. My opinion is that these churches (especially the leaders who are teaching this) are in need to repent from this false teaching which is stopping unbelievers from coming to Christ. Praise God I'm out of these type of churches.

I've heard alot of "I think" rather than what the word says! God bless you brother! I will agree partly but not all the way through.

I was raised in an old school Pentecostal church. The one where men and women had to sit on seperate sides and women had to wear dresses or skirts when we stepped foot in the church especially on the alter. Going to church was stressful at times growing up because after every service, the pastor would encourage people to go up to get prayed for. As a youth, I was practically forced to go up, if i didnt, I would be looked at ashamed. So I would go up. The pastor would go to each person and put his hand on our forehead. Spoke loudly in our ears, practically yelled, and it felt like he was forcing holy spirit on us. Idk if it was bcuz of all the crying I did or from the craziness, but I would, so I thought, spoke in tongues or just gibberish. I repent looking back at it now. Anyways, and with the force of his hand, I would fall to the ground. Then I would wake up with a blanket over me. To be honest with you, I don't remember ever feeling a sense of peace afterwards. After years in that church, and leaving at 18, now being 31, it feels like I have ptsd bcuz I get uneasy and ashamed when I think about it.

Sounds similar to my growing up and way too many years of my adulthood, other than it was at nondenominational churches that followed those leanings. I have had PTSD as well and the only thing that has helped is unpacking everything I was ever fed, examining it in light of Scripture-reading it for what it says and not what others try to say it says-and a lot of time in prayer. I never spoke in tongues or fell out legitimately, but only through coercion did I appear to for the sake of wanting to be a part and feel spiritual. On the inside, I was sure God just didn't love me or want to use me like the others. That I was wrong somehow in a way I could not pinpoint. It's been a decade since I left that mess for good after researchinga guest speaker we had that particularly troubled me. It was like a sweater unraveling from there and, pretty soon, so much of what I had been fed was shown to me to be nothing but a sham and I knew I could not stay. I am at a church now that concentrates on teaching the Word and reaching people for Christ without all the trappings. I am so grateful. Thanks for sharing your experience. It reminds me I am not alone in this. Praying all the best for you.
