UK bacon is cut from the loin. American bacon is thinly sliced pork belly. Smoked with hickory or apple wood. Usually fried crisp. In the US your bacon would be called Canadian bacon. Still a delicious sandwich, but you have to try it with US style bacon, if you can find it or just smoked pork belly, and cut your own. Its also more of a lunch thing, than breakfast. Here, that would be a ham sandwich. Lol

Also never tried a BLT without mayo or some type of substitute (such as Miracle Whip) which adds more texture and flavor. What is wonderful about food is that it is always a matter of preference. Recipes are just shared food preparations that can be customized, especially with things like sandwiches. Baking might need more precise proportions to achieve a desired result. You need to TOAST your bread! This is a substantially important step in the BLT! Your bacon must be crispy; trim off the fat! Be sure to blot the grease from the bacon with a paper towel before placing it on your toast. The mayo needs to go on both sides of the toasted bread. Yes, to the pepper. I personally like black pepper on my BLT as well. Also, sometimes, I enjoy adding a fried egg to my BLT, which technically makes it a BLTE.

Chef's tip: Rather than oil in the pan but a thin layer of tap water in with the bacon. The water will boil off and draw out the fat content from the bacon and render the bacon crisper than when cooked normally. Secondly, you can make it a BLTAC - by adding cheese slices and some sliced avocado. It adds some richness to the bacon/tomato. But great first outing with it. Sourdough works best IMHO. Toasted is even better. If you add sliced chicken or ham/turkey then you've started to migrate to a full on CLUB sandwich - usually it's a three bread sandwich (one top & bottom and one in the middle). Just some expansion options on the original outing.

This is one of those simple dishes driven by ingredient quality: good bread -- nicely toasted by preference (I prefer San Francisco sourdough, myself), great tomatoes in season -- fresh from your own garden or a farmers' market, really crisp lettuce (one of the very few places I prefer iceberg lettuce), and a great mayonnaise (if you can get it Japanese Kewpie mayo is divine here -- there are homemade taste-alike recipes online).

Oh mercy. I got so frustrated reading the comments. Some people were way to critical in the way you fixed the BLTs. I guess they fail to realize you guys don't always have the same things we do. I thought you did great. But yes, the only thing that needed to be done was to toast the bread first. Bur like some others have said, you can add anything else you would like, like a fried egg or a slice of Avocado. It's up to you to make it how you like. Don't be afraid to experiment! You can even try a different bread if you so choose. Just remember, do whatever makes YOU happy! That's what most Americans do. Anyway, you did a fine job. I loved watching you enjoy your sandwich and coffee. Love ❤️ from Texas.

The whole idea here is to make authentic American food and it is not being too critical to give tips about how to adjust the recipes to be more authentic. One thing though: I'd love to know where the basic recipes come from. In some cases little touches suggest to me they come from a British cookbook on making American food and I'd suggest rather just Googling an authentic recipe (there are dozens for anything you might want to make on the internet).

@@BTinSFI agree! They definitely aren't listening to the actual Americans! I was reading comments and nearly everyone said toast the bread! Then today they took a survey on if the bread should be toasted or not!?? They aren't listening! It's like brits leading brits then questioning the Americans 😂 We are trying so hard to give straight forward authenic advice and have people talking about eggs, avacados and ketchup! Even q pee mayo isn't even American! Frustrating on many levels!

I don't know about the bacon. From what I understand that in England, they prefer bacon rashes vs. streaky bacon. But in America, we don't have bacon rashes that are sold on our grocery store shelves. We have only streaky bacon that is sold in our grocery stores. So streaky bacon is what we prefer. Plus, streaky bacon cooks up more crisper than bacon rashes. A good BLT sandwich is toasted sliced bread, crispy streaky bacon, ripe red tomatoes (that are in season), crisp lettuce, a little salt and pepper on the tomatos, and mayo.

We use American style bacon. Toast the bread. Spread butter or mayonnaise, depending on which you prefer, on the toasted bread. Use lettuce with a larger leaf. Salad cream is not a thing here, we have an enormous variety of salad dressings (such as Ranch dressing which is how Ranch became the name of a flavor) and anyone who wanted something like salad cream would probably use mayo.

BLTs are more of a lite lunch, snack, lazy dinner thing. They pair really well with soup.

It's not an American BLT. You're using what we call Canadian bacon (not American bacon), and you're not using iceberg lettuce.

Our bacon is different, your bacon is like what they have in canada, we call it canadian bacon.

@@miked1639 there's no such thing as canadian bacon in canada, it's called back bacon and it's just the loin. peameal bacon was rolled in peameal to preserve it for the trip to europe during the world wars. canada has side bacon too.
