And the substitutions for "toilet" in America have a wide range. For women, it's "use the restroom," "fix my hair," or "wash my hands.". Men are much more creative. "I need to see a man about a horse," "I gotta drain the lizard," or " It's time to mark my territory."

Pretty sure I usually say bathroom when in a home, but call it a restroom if I'm out in public. If I'm feeling really fancy, I'll call it a washroom. If in my own home, my husband and I will romantically say something like, "I gotta poop", then head to the bathroom.

I've been in an old department store with restroom and I saw why. You entered basically a sitting room. Maybe to rest or nurses and then you go into the other room to go to the bathroom. Sinks etc were also in there. So it truly was a restroom.

Flannel is what some shirts and bed sheets are made from. A wash cloth is something we use to wash our face with.

Wardrobe is a free standing clothes or coat closet that isn't built into the wall. Cupboard is used for any storage of any type of item. In kitchen it might be called a pantry if it is large size. Thumbtacks have a flat head of white or color. What Lawrence showed is called pushpin. Washcloths are made of terry cloth so they are called washcloths. Flannel is a term that refers to actual material & is mostly used as an adjective to describe an item & term is not used on its own otherwise (i.e. flannel blanket, flannel pajamas, flannel shirt, etc.). [Fabric similar to flannel can be traced back to Wales in the 16th century. The fabric was called ''Welsh cotton'', and was a coarse woolen material with a fluffed surface similar to flannel.] Lawrence does not have anything close to an American accent though he uses American words & phrases & pronounces some words the American way which might be why British people think that.

I think the flannel thing is regional, because in my area we say "flannel" and everybody knows you're talking about the shirt. If it's something else that's flannel then you specify.

In America a Flannel is referred to as a long sleeve Flannel Shirt or light weight Flannel Coat. The word Flannel can also be used to refer to a type of 100% Cotton Soft Cloth Material such as the type of cloth material that’s used to make Flannel Shirts or Light Flannel Jackets/Coats.

The squares of cloth used for washing would not be a flannel here, as they are pretty much exclusively made of terry cloth. Flannel also makes lovely nightshirts for women, favored because they are soft and warm and because it is exciting to one's partner to see said woman wearing the flannel nightshirt and acting cuddly. Flannel shirts are also worn by Canadian lumberjacks to cover their bras (or so I have heard).

In the US, a "toilet" is exclusively an object one would find in a bathroom, restroom, lavatory, washroom, men's room or ladies room. If we heard someone say "where's the toilet" we would look at them in a perplexed way and say, "it's in the bathroom" like it's the most bizarre question we've ever been asked. We're not even all that comfortable using the word "toilet" in general, since it's a private and dirty thing polite people would never mention, since it conjures images of where you're sitting and what you're doing.

Growing up, my parents were friends with a couple who lived in a house built in the '50s. It had a large full bathroom, but when you came in the back door into a small room, to the left there was a working toilet that no one took out when they remodeled. The couple decided to leave it when they moved in because you just never know when you might have to go. There was no privacy with this toilet either. Someone could come through the back door and find you or come out of the kitchen and find you. 😳

Asking for the "toilet" has an uncouth nasty or dirty connotation since in the U.S. "toilet" solely refers to the crapper. For instance, no one in a restaurant wants to know or think about you taking a sh*t when asking where the toilet is. So please use any of the following terms instead: "washroom", "bathroom", "men's room" or ladies room" as any of these suggests you might just need to wash your hands or check your make-up, thoughts that are much more palatable, especially in an eatery.

They preferred bathroom. I consider myself more of a lover of history plus our similarities and connections and influences from the British (and Irish) over the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and vice versa. The USA pre 2000s was mostly Americanized British culture with influences from Italy Eastern Europeans with Jewish people too especially NY NJ areas. Southeastern part Colonial British influence and New England with some Italian influence with twists of French. Upper Mid West with lots of influences from Germans Dutch and Scandinavians. 1) I'm from New England. I've always used the word "trash" for what goes in the bin for the weekly pick-up and "garbage" for food waste specifically, some of which I can put into the garbage disposal. I used the word "bin," rather than "can" or "barrel," because we have the type that is picked up by an arm attached to the truck. 2) I use the term "restroom" for public toilets. It's a euphemism that just seems more genteel. 3) According to Wikipedia, "eggplant/aubergine" has had even more English names in the past, such as "garden egg" and "vegetable egg." Words used in other languages, as well as "aubergine," are derived from "badinjan." That last word is from a language of southern India, where the plant originates. I've never heard "aubergine" in the U.S., but I have heard the southern Italian word "mulignana" and the proper Italian word "melanzana." 5) I more often hear "baseball hat" than "baseball cap." 6) The only American I've heard say "post" is my nephew when he was 3 or 4, because he was binge-watching "Peppa Pig." 7) Many American Latinos use the Spanish word "fútbol." 8) There are many "Shell" and only a few "BP" gas stations where I live. By the way, the word "gasoline" is derived from the trademark terms "Gazeline" and originally "Cazeline." English businessman John Cassell named it after himself in 1862. 9) "Thumbtacks" have flat heads that will be nearly flush with the "bulletin board" or "cork board" they are pressed into. The type of pins Laurence showed are called "push pins." I don't know why we make this distinction. 10) I don't say "washcloth." I have "dish towels" in the kitchen and "face cloths," "hand towels," and "bath towels" in the bathroom. I use the word "flannel" as others have described in this comments section. 11) "Digestive biscuit" sounds like a remedy for a stomachache or an intestinal problem.

The half bath does not have a place to bathe. Calling it a bath may have evolved from how they are advertised for sale. Four letters is cheaper than six.

What he showed at number 9 was what we actually call push pins, or just pins. Thumbtacks have a flat head that you push in with your thumb. Pretty much everyone I know uses washcloths. Me & some family and friends sometimes mention how odd it is that there are people out there that do not use washcloths. It very well might be a cultural thing. Even though we have loofahs and poofs, we still have and use washcloths as well. It could be a regional thing, but in addition to saying apartment, in Chicago we would refer to some buildings that had no more than three apartments as a two-flat or a three-flat.

For us in America 🇺🇸 our closest are actually made into the walls we don't use cupboards unless they are used in other areas. That is why when we have warnings that could harm you tell you to find the closest place on the bottom floor that is not near any windows or glass & if you can't do that then you should go into a closet. I Pray 🙏 Ya'll Have No Issues With The Storm & All Is Well With Your Family!! I'm Sending Ya'll Lots Of Prayers, Blessings, Hugs, & Love ❤ From My Family To Yours. 12:45 The items pictured for what Lawrence called "thumbtacks" are what I call "pushpins." To me, a thumbtack has a very flat head, whereas a pushpin has the more substantial, somewhat elongated head.. Pushpins are easier to remove than thumbtacks, so that may be why some folks have different words for them.

To me the difference between 'bathroom' and 'restroom' is whether there is a bathtub or shower enclosure. To a designer, a room in a residence with just a sink and toilet is a powder room, but real estate listings show that as a 'half bath' (though it has no bath at all).

On the word flat vs apartment-- I like the word flat don't get me wrong, but I have a question for you, a building full of apartments is an apartment building, but what is a building full of flats? When you sue one another, do your lawyers call them flats in the case? Does the government call it a flat? Are there royal flats or royal apartments in Buckingham palace? In the US apartments are often controlled by an apartment owner's association and condominiums are controlled by a similar condominium owner's associations. Do you form your own "flat owner's association?"

I totally get it about your accent changing when you talk to someone from where you are from. I am from Hawaii and my Dad has a thick Pidgin English accent. My Mom's only comes out when she is mad because she is an ESL teacher (English as a second language) teacher so she tempers it. I now live in North Carolina and I talk to my parents every week and I notice that my Hawaii Pidgin English comes out after the conversation. The last time I went home and came back to North Carolina. Well, let's just say it was a transition. Or how we say it in Hawaii. "Ho Brah, try fo speak mainland, stay hard. Da kine way I speak stay all Kapakahi but Bumbai I stay can."

Closets in America are for hung up clothing and some homes have large walk in closets with many closet rods to hang them on. Cupboards are for dishes/plates, cups, China. In the kitchen the cupboards above sink, above refrigerator, along walls are for canned foods, spices, etc. Some also have food pantry area of house. Like man said, Baseball Cap originated/Designed in USA for Baseball Sport. Mail hence Mailing Address or even Email Address, yes we call our US Postal Service that processes and handles our Mail as the Post Office, this guy would say Okay honey I'm going out to the Mailbox to get the Mail. A Post is usually wooden pole or beam used in construction, so you don't say I'm going out the the Post, the horse probably tied to it.

To most Americans, a wardrobe is a piece of furniture that can hold hanging clothes .....as in the movie....The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.......and a closet is basically another "room" even though most are smallish like linen closets, hall closets and closets in non master bedrooms.

American Truck Drivers don't use Gas or Petro nope we use Diesel and call it Fuel, we also must fuel trucks with DEF. I've an experienced Lady Trucker 20+ years and I fuel two 120 gallon Diesel tanks plus pull rig forward at fuel pumps and fuel the Reefer fuel tank too. I chain up 18 wheeled Semi Tractor 53' Trailer during Winter on snow and ice. I used to be Flatbed Truck Driver pulling 45' and 48' Trailers performing heavy haul load securement, changed to pulling 53' Reefer and Dry Van's but still driving 600 to 700 miles per day cross Country USA.

Country folks refer to the toilet place calling it the John, Outhouse, Water Closet. In town it's the Ladies Room, Restroom, Gent's Room. Of course most businesses have signage saying Restrooms. But of course people aren't literally resting there. Usually for residential homes the rooms having sinks, toilet, shower or tub are called Bathrooms, no matter if there's not a bathtub in the room. Washroom is laundry room and has clothes washer, clothes dryer, scrubbing sink. Most American homes don't have the laundry machines located in the kitchen or dining area. Many homes have multiple bathrooms, some have listed on Rental Market or Real Estate the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms such as an 3 bedroom 2 bath home, or 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom home, could be 6 bedroom 4 bathrooms, whatever.
