I think it's important to note (which Lawrence didn't mention) is that both pumpkin and sweet potatoes are both native to the Americas, so they've been part of the American culture before Europeans even made contact. So the fact that they just naturally grow here adds to the normalcy in our food.

If you ever do try to make pumpkin pie don't use the Halloween pumpkins- you need a baking ( cooking) pumpkin. FYI- it's normal to use cinnamon in pumpkin pie but it's not essential. You can find recipes without it.

If sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie tastes the same to you, then the baker made the sweet potato pie wrongly. Typically people in the north and midwest use the same ingredients in both pies so that they taste the same. A big mistake. In southern baking, particularly in black American households, the ingredients are different and they are not even baked in the same kind of pans. Sweet potato pies are baked in rectangular baking pans, and they are made thicker and whipped fluffier than pumpkin pies. Sweet potato pies are generally sweetened with molasses, just brown sugar, or both, vanilla flavoring, a touch of lemon flavoring, and use far less of the spices used in pumpkin pies. Sweet potato pies do not use clove, and use far less nutmeg. Cinnamon usage is about the same, and occasionally (and only occasionally) a little rum is added. Always bake with unsalted butter. This will result in a pie of a different flavor, thickness, and consistency than pumpkin pie, which needs more spices just to add flavor. Sweet potato already has a flavor that just needs to be enhanced.

Key Lime Pie is brilliant, but you'll never be able to source the ingredients. Graham crackers will be tough, and Key Limes or bottled Key Lime juice is tough even in most of the US. Normal limes don't work as a substitute.

Hell you can grow the key limes or Mexican limes in Texas all the way over to Florida I have two lime trees right now along with two lemon trees and orange trees

Amazon. Order Graham crackers and key lime juice. It can be done with regular limes and lemon but it really isn't the same.

@@Boodieman72 shipping the juice would be the way to go. A channel fan from Florida, where even in juice form it's going to be cheaper than in the rest of the US. Or I suppose a Mexican fan, theoretically, or a Texan or Californian who produce shops in Mexico.

While my favorite pie of the 4 is Pecan pie, I really recommend the Key Lime pie, but it needs to be made with Key limes, because of the higher acid content of that type of lime. If it's not made with Key limes, it's a Lime Chiffon pie. Key limes are sufficiently acidic that they can be used in some cold recipes, where the cooking is done via chemical reactions, rather than thermally.

I disagree. I’ve made it with both key limes and regular limes and my family can’t tell the difference. And it’s a pain to juice key limes because they’re so small. I’ve also used the bottled key lime juice, but I don’t like the additives in it. I always use regular limes now because it’s not worth it when there is virtually no difference in taste.

Key Lime Pie is a mix of tart and sweet, with a crisp crust and gooey filling. Sometimes topped with whipped cream for those who like it a bit sweet, or left off for people who prefer the tarter aspects.

Here’s a quick recipe for you guys to try if the ingredients are available. I just thought about it whilst thinking of apple pie. INGREDIENTS 1 package of cream cheese {8 oz} *allow cream cheese to soften a bit by leaving out on counter ½ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of granulated white sugar 1 tsp of pure vanilla extract 1 package of Heath Bits ‘O Brickle Toffee Bits (or about 7 or 8 regular heath bars crumbled) apples INSTRUCTIONS Use mixer to combine cream cheese, brown sugar, sugar, and vanilla. Do not overmix. Fold in the toffee bits ( or crumbled heath bars) Refrigerate for 1 hour. Slice the apples into desired size. To keep the apple slices from turning brown, dip into pineapple juice. Serve Granny Smith apples (green apples) and dip!

Here is a list of all the types of pies my family makes or has made for the holidays. Apple, peach, blueberry, cherry, pumpkin, sweet potato, pecan, key lime, and lemon meringue. In the late summer months there have been made strawberry rhubarb pies, chocolate cream, coconut custard, as well as the key lime and lemon meringue pies. Some places even have mango pies. Those are very similar to the key lime pie. Another tradition my family has, is to have pie on March 14th. 3-14 national pie (PI) day. With the pumpkin or sweet potato pies, you can always use less cinnamon and add more ginger or clove. And some use all spice or nutmeg to season those pies. Have fun making the pies.

I don’t like sweet potatoes either. But, sweet potato pie is absolutely amazing! Also, contrary to popular belief, pumpkin and sweet potato pies, DO NOT taste the same. I personally don’t care much for pumpkin pie. Although, yes, the seasonings are similar, pumpkin and sweet potatoes do not have a similar taste, nor the same texture. In my own opinion, pumpkin has a bit of a bitterness to it, that sweet potatoes don’t. In any case, both pies are worth a taste. EDITED TO ADD: I love the idea of y’all doing a cook off! I especially like the idea of one doing a popular British dish, with the other making the American equivalent. Perhaps, a British meat pie Vs. an American “Pot pie” (meat pie!)??

Another pie that is seldom see these days is vinegar pie. Although it is really more a cobbler than a true pie. In the pioneer days, the settlers often did not have fruit to make a pie filling. But they usually had flour, sugar, shortening, and vinegar. Hungary for sweets, they found they could use vinegar in place of the fruit and using biscuit dough for the crust and lots of sugar, they could make a very good cobbler. It was a staple during the depression. My mother use to make it for us when I was a kid just because it was delicious. Tangy, and sweet with a sweet biscuit topping. Lots of sugar, butter and cinnamon.

You might try having hand pies. The pie dough is cut into a circle and the filling is put inside and the dough is folded over. That way it is a portable dessert that can be eaten with your hands.

I am sure that the majority of people in the states use canned pumpkin to make their pumpkin pie. Sweet potato pie is not as dismal as it sounds. It can be quite good. It is also often baked with a layer of tiny marshmallows baked on top, much like the version of sweet potato casserole that many serve with dinner. We do make pies with pretty much every fruit out there too. Then a variety of either cream or custard pies as well. So good!

In order from the best to the good: 1.) chocolate pie with vanilla wafer crust and whip cream on top. (The chocolate is like silk) 2.) Apple Pie A la mode- Warm Apple pie with cold vanilla ice cream 3.) Warm Cherry pie with cold vanilla ice cream 4.) Patty LaBelle’s sweet potato pie with whipped cream (only Patty LaBelle’s, trust me) this one’s store bought. 5.) pecan pie, of course! 6.) Lemon Meringue or Key Lime Pie 7.) I’m adding Banana Pudding, it’s not a pie or else it would be on top. My mom’s recipe is the best which has cream cheese, dream whip, cut up bananas, vanilla & banana pudding layered, the cookies are chessman (not vanilla wafers, chessman cookies are melt in your mouth cookies), all of the ingredients are layered with a nice topping of whipped cream and cookie crumbles. There’s also an Oreo dessert almost like banana pudding but, with Oreos instead.

Both Sweet Potato and Pumpkin pie, are just custard pies. "Sweet Potato" is usually made with a Yam, especially if you think it looks like Pumpkin Pie. Pumpkin pie is actually a squash today in all the cans. You need fully ripe fruit, if you are going to make it yourself, and always bake it, no matter who tells you to boil the flesh. They do have the actual pie contents in cans as well, which would give you the actual taste without the vagaries that show up from people's cooking. I would bet you can get some of your friends to help with the pie eating contest. It is usually done with more people than just two. It's too bad that you are so far away, there's no way an actual pie would make it.

When I was a kid living in Mississippi I would collect pecans from neighbors yards, crack them...and my mom would make pies out of them. It’s still my favorite pie 53 years later. I have tried to grow pecan trees in Oregon, but can’t get them to survive.

Very interesting. I think videos like these really helps put things into perspective. There's the old saying "everything seems normal to you until someone else points out that it's not" and I think this is especially true for things like food or regional slang. For instance, I was surprised to see foreigners shocked at the idea of pumpkin pie because I always regarded it as normal. But then again, it goes both ways. For instance, I was equally shocked to learn that in England there is such a thing as a "fish pie". Cheers!
