You don't have to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in one day. We drove it in a couple of days back in the late 70s. There are plenty of places to stop on the Parkway for something to eat and restroom facilities. There are overlooks where you can pull off and get spectacular views. There are several places you can stay just off the Parkway. All within a short drive. You can pull off at several places in order get to the place you want to stay.

You can drive to Alaska on the Al Can highway, or you can take a ferry from Washington state. The planes that fly into Anchorage from all over the globe are not little planes.We had the largest plane in the world, the Antonov, land here during the pandemic. That same plane was destroyed by Russian troops last year in Ukraine. Anchorage is the third largest cargo airport in the US and handles massive planes all the time in any weather. Small planes such as float planes and ski planes are used for excursions to villages and off the road system places but cities in Alaska where most tourists visit have regular airports.

Best way to do Route 66 is to go EAST to WEST in a comfortable large car (there is a reason why those classic Cadillacs are so big). Go with a minimal planning and be open to seeing silly, crazy, insane things like largest buffalo or a weird bug museums, or VWs stuck in the desert, or whatever the billboards are advertising, just go and see and don't try to make sense of it all. At the end of the EAST to WEST journey, you get to see the Pacific Ocean and explore Venice Beach and other LA places. You can then drive up to Anaheim and go to Disneyland or go to San Francisco. Route 66 EAST to WEST has a way better finish line and the roadside attractions get crazier the farther west you go so the build up is a lot more exciting.

Alaska: You do NOT have to take a plane anywhere if you don't want to. I would suggest taking one of the ferries that depart the Seattle area to Valdez and renting a car there and driving up the highway toward Fairbanks. If you have the time you can go all the way but you don't have to go that far to see glaciers and the amazing Copper Canyon. There's also a junction where you can make a left turn and go to Anchorage which you might want to do if you want to see Denali (I believe there's a train from Anchorage to the park). The trip to Valdez by water will allow you to get your fill of fjords and coastal scenery which is spectacular.
@hydej1667

But . . . . You Do have to fly to see most of Alaska's millions of acres. Not accessable by ferry, boats, nor by driving (no roads to Most of Alaska 🙃
@BTinSF
@BTinSF Жыл бұрын
@@hydej1667 Again, you can see a large chunk of Alaska's interior from the roads running between Valdez and Anchorage or Fairbanks. That plus the coast you can see from the ferry between Seattle and Valdez and what you can see in Denali by taking the train there from Anchorage should be enough for any tourist, especially ones like the Beesleys who expressed an aversion to flying in the sort of light planes that go elsewhere.

Orcas Island is part of the San Juan Islands, which is just north of Puget Sound in the Straight of Georgia. It's actually pronounced ore-cuss, despite there being a lot of orcas in the waters around there. My final score was seven--Liberty Hall and City Hall in Philadelphia, the Smokey Mountains, Disney World, Nashville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Daytona. I've been to lots of other places, but they didn't make that guy's list. He left out the Huntsville Alabama Rocket Park, Sweetwater Tennessee's The Lost Sea cave system, the Very Large Array radio telescope facility in New Mexico, and lots of other neat places I've been to in the US. That's understandable because I live in the Southern US and he seems to be based on the West Coast.

I dispute that the Portland headlight is the most iconic lighthouse in America. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is much more iconic, and it's also one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. I felt he had too much of an East Coast bias, and threw a few touristy things from the heart land in there. Skipped most of the rockies and then added a bunch of west coast. While visiting the childhood home of Mark Twain and Louisa Alcott might be of interest to maybe 1% of people watching, He left out places like Zion, Bryce, the Bonneville Salt flats, Grand Tetons, Tombstone, Sedona, Roswell... SO many places in the rockies & Southwest that should have been included rather than a rebuilt (not even original) cabin in the backwoods of Kentucky. The way the list was going I expected him to put 'the biggest ball of yarn;' or 'the 50 ft tall rocking chair' as must sees.

We have made it to 71 of the places mentioned. Overall, I think he made some egregious omissions such as the Redwoods, both national and state parks in CA, Napa Valley, Mt. St. Helens National Monument, San Simeon (Hearst Mansion or Biltmore in Asheville NC (Vanderbilt) should have been included over some of the residences he mentioned (Winchester Mystery House??). Also, Sedona, Zion NP, Bryce NP, Mesa Verde, where were they on this list? Houston Space Center is a must see if you're interested in space, and Key West is wonderful for its laid back atmosphere. Since he included whole cities on his list, Savannah and Charleston SC should have been included. What about Mammoth Cave NP in Kentucky? Those are a few I can think of off the top of my head.

The Pacific NW, Glacier National Park, Columbia River Gorge, Blue Ridge Pkwy/Smokey Mountains are among some of my favorites. Holland- just a really cool, really dutch city. a neat example of immigrants maintaining their homeland culture throughout the generations. watch out for the metric fuckton of tulips if you have allergies. Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, Farmington Hills- exactly what it says on the tin. lots of doodads and thingamajigs. bonus cool points if you're a tally hall fan. Cherry Festival, Traverse City- cherry pies. cherry sundaes. cherry jelly. cherry jam. cherry scones. cherry cake. cherry art. cherry clothing. cherry music. cherry bobbing competitions. cherry pie races. cherry heart. cherry soul. all on in a really nice coastal resort town with a neat museum and theater. Sault Ste Marie- oldest city in Michigan. old cathedral, old play theater, tower of history, shipwreck museum on an actual ship (though not quite as comprehensive as the one in Paradise).

I think you might be wrong there buddy. Notre Dame has a certain mystique because of their early dominance of college football in the 30s and 40s as well as Coach Knute Rockne. We're talking about the guy that came up with the forward pass. He was the first coach to not allow his team cigarettes as he knew it hurt athletic ability. This was in the 1930s. Plus you can't forget the "Win one for the Gipper" speech or that he's the first Hall Of Fame coach. Or that he had 3 National Titles in 11 years at Notre Dame.

I would like to see Hannibal, Missouri because Mark Twain was a very good writer of stories like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884),A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889) and many short stories. Littles will be too short to ride some of the rides and disney is disney there is so much to do between the parks, the rides, the animals, star wars, and soon marvel. I am in Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge is home to tons of waterfalls, kite & windsurfing, hiking, at hood river (a town in the gorge) there is the fruit loop trail where tons of amazing farms and such sell their wares

There are Native American burial mounds in Minnesota - I assume they are in other places in the US as well.

Highway 1 up the coast is crazy it’s steep cliffs and tight turns on an extremely narrow road for a lot of it I’m afraid of heights and I could never ever do it

Mark Twain to us is like your Charles Dickens. His books are fun interesting reading. It's life back in the days before the civil war.

Regarding your question if there is a toll to cross the Golden Gate Bridge in the previous video, yes there is it. It's $8. All 8 major bridges in the Bay Area charge a toll to cross.

@marksmith4892 bro, just go away. It costs money to maintain and run these bridges. For example, after the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake, it cost billions to sesmic retrofit all the bridges, not just the toll bridges but also all the freeway bridges in the Bay Area. If you are not from California, I don't need to here your remarks slamming my state. I don't go around slamming other states in the comment section of videos on the internet.

@@ronluk76 I'll be happy to stay away and the rest of the middle class in Cali has fled/is fleeing as well. There's a mass exodus from that dump.

@@ronluk76 yesterday I read some comments saying when the bridge was built talking about still paying for it. My first thought was the massive undertaking to improve everything in California. There was a lot of destruction. So they also had to rebuild. Because of the impact, improvements have been required in a lot of other states. So coming from Utah Thank you!!
