The tunnel rats were American, Australian and New Zealander soldiers who performed underground search and special missions in Vietnam. This US Army Training film shows how tunnel rats detect and neutralize enemy earthen tunnels.
The "tunnel rats" were volunteer infantrymen, primarily from the US Army. Their motto was the Latin phrase "Non Gratum Anus Rodentum" - "not worth a rat's ass".
Since the 1940s the Viet Cong had created an extensive underground system of complexes. By the 1960s, there were underground hospitals, training grounds, storage facilities, headquarters and more. The Viet Cong might stay underground for several months at a time. The tunnels were their territory.
Tunnel rats were generally, but not exclusively, men of smaller stature (5'6" and under) in order to fit in the narrow tunnels. A tunnel rat was equipped with only a standard issue .45 caliber pistol, a bayonet and a flashlight, although most tunnel rats were allowed to choose another pistol with which to arm themselves.
A tunnel rat might choose to go into the tunnels wearing a gas mask as it would be impossible to put one on in a narrow tunnel. More often than not, however, a tunnel rat would take his chances without a gas mask, as it made even harder to see, hear and breathe in the narrow, dark tunnels.

My brother was a “Rat” in Nam.....he left home a boy...he returned a very different, wounded young man........ptsd was not recognized back then.....he died from complications to agent Orange and CS exposure.......scared and broken. He can home to be more deeply wounded by Americans. His and thousands of others names belong on the WALL. God bless everyone of our brave brothers living and dead who answered the call from Liberty. You are honored and remembered.❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

The was some Americans treated Vietnam veterans was truly appalling. I can't get my head around it at all. The Aussies didn't treat their boys that way. It's unacceptable. I’m 37. My dad, for the first time in my life just shared with me that he was a tunnel rat in Vietnam in 1969. I never even knew he had been in Vietnam to visit, nevermind the war. He found a viet kong in a tunnel and had to kill him to escape. He’d been shot and was bad enough to have him sent him and discharged with a purple heart. He still won’t talk about it, won’t share his experiences… but it seems like he’s slowly starting to share bit by bit. I’ll never ask him to be uncomfortable, but I can’t help but have so many questions and want to know what his experiences were - positive and negative. I just hope in time he’ll be able to share more about his experience. This man was a hero to me before I knew this, the things he’s put himself through just in my lifetime all to ensure his family had what it needed. I wish I was half the man my father is, I truly mean that.

@@Seeker887 Wow. Thank you man. I mean it was really one of those things that hit home. Knowing he’d gone that long without ever talking about it, even his closest friend, his parents, his sister - they never knew. My mom knew, and that’s about it. He’s beginning to share little bits more and more. Slowly, but it’s nice to finally have a better understanding of the man. We’ve always been close, so it was quite the revelation. Thanks for sharing brother.

Not really. You won independance from Britain, so in a sense, yes, but if you really won the war of 1812, it would be called Toronto, USA, not Toronto, Canada. Brock, outmanned, and outpowerered, still embarassed your military force. I'm not sure what they teach in American history books, but I'm pretty sure you've been lied to. Modern American historians have conceited that one to Canada. We even burned down The Whitehouse. Don't feel bad though, you lost to the best. ;) Oh, and thanks for FINALLY showing up for WWII. I read the book The Tunnels of Cu Chi, and thry described entrance chambers where the poor fellow who went in saw the walls/ceilings "moving" and when he turned a flash light on he would see the walls, floor, ceilings were *covered* in spiders. @@bf2703 If a soldier lost it and had a freakout where they were screaming/crying, they were never allowed to do a tunnel mission again. Some guys would do it, thinking it was better sh*t to be in then the current sh*t they were in prior. I heard you could refuse this duty sometimes without punishment, or just say never again one day. But some dude's were good at it and handled themselves better than others. To think some guys did this throught a majority of their tour or even a quarter it is insane. Every problem later in life dealt with would seem like a cake walk I bet. Basically 1/3 of the guys that did tunnel rat missions passed during the mission. Crazy stuff. This was also a great place to test new weapons designed for fighting in tight spaces. One fella said that the most effective weapon he got to use was an rmy colt revolver loaded with specially designed flachete rounds. Another good weapon for the dankest tunnels was gasoline, rubber hoses, and a leaf blower. once they poured in enough gasoline, they lit it up and used the leaf blower to keep the fire oxygenated. On the surface they would hear guys down there screaming from being burned alive. Vietnam was a tough fucking gig. much respect for all our people who served.

Operation Creation uncle ho attemped to ask the US to help set vietnm free of the french. The US ignored it in favor of supporting their french allie at the time. Vietnam was home to the michelin rubber plantation among many other things and was a huge source of revenue for a euro-colonial power that has no domestic resources to keep up with advances of the mdern world. When the war broke out between the vietmin and the french , and the french subsequently defeated, the north and south were divided. People in vietnam wanted independence and knew only one side offered said independence. The govt in the north was led by uncle ho who wanted an independent vietnam. The lacky of the south was subordinate to the french and like those who succeeded him, corrupt as fuck. The people, the patriots of Vietnam were supported by USSR and even a neighboring enemy - The chinese. The enemy of my enemy is my best friend, yes? When vietnam war totally ended with reunification, the Lon Nol government was being viciously attacked by chinese supported Khmer Rouge forces who after winning, turned toward Vietnam to reclaim its southern lands as they were once part of the empire of Ankor. Once again, the vietnamese had to fight foreign invaders. This upset the Chinese as the Sino-soviet split was in full gear so, USSR-backed vietnam was pitted agwinst Chinese-backed and recently decimated Cambodia. Upon winning against Pol Pot and driving out the khmer rouge in 1979, (sporadic fighting continued into the 80's) The chinese attacked and tried to briefly occupy a piece of northern vietnam. Though overehelmed the vietnamese military held fast quite well. That would pretty much be the end of major fighting the vietnamese had to deal with from their neighbors and others. So! The vietnamese were successful because they *knew* what they were fighting for. They foight off the French, Japanese, Americn coalition, Cambodia, and China. These people sacrificed alot and got their independence. The vietnamese will always have my respect as well as the Americsn F105 Thubderchief pilots and those who served in Vietnam. 💝

Any remaining tunnels are probably infested with rats, and Cobras now. I'm sure the Vietcong probably didn't really clean up when they left. and there's probably still booby traps down there in some tunnels. I guess a pretty effective booby trap was to purposely make certain tunnels narrow and weakly supported so they would collapse on anyone who didn't know not to use that leg of the tunnel and tried to squeeze through. Or they would make what amounted to a pit in a section of tunnel with sharpened sticks (Punji sticks) and make a weak bamboo support platform over it and cover it with dirt, so you'd be crawling along and suddenly the platform would collapse and you'd get skewered by the sticks. I'd much rather spelunk some old Nazi underground bunkers, much safer and fewer Cobras.

I'm surprised they didn't just use some kind of flamethrower to burn up most of the oxygen inside the tunnel like they did with the Japanese who held out in caves in WW2. There would be a natural draft if it had 2 openings. Or Start a fire in one entrance and have the smoke waft through the tunnel complex. Carbon Monoxide would settle down into the lower tunnels and choke anyone below the smoke line.Also it would let you find the other entrances when you see the smoke pouring out. a drum of Diesel Fuel and a Zippo might've done the trick.

Well, now I know how much dynamite to use in case I want to blow up some tunnels of my own. 2lbs per foot of tunnel for less than 10 feet of depth. Add 2lbs of dynamite per foot of tunnel as the overburden depth increases in increments of 10 feet. So 20 feet of overburden would require 4lbs of dynamite per foot of tunnel and 30 feet would need 6lbs per foot, etc. lol

one thing I dont understand is why not take the tunnels under control. Yes, I understand that doctrine favored guerilla tactics,because no one knew who was truly the enemy, but wouldn't securing territory be the best method of area denial?
@mynamedoesntmatter8652
@mynamedoesntmatter8652 Жыл бұрын
We didn’t “secure territory.” As soon as a battle for a place was over it went right back into the hands of the Vietcong. That’s how we lost so many US troops, those guys took the fall for politicians and drug runners. It was all a fallacy like the war on drugs. Except of course the CIA funded everything to do with that fiasco with drug monies. Air America shuttled out drugs in US transport planes via Laos while LBJ planned his dirty deeds, getting himself into the presidency and going to war “against communism” in Vietnam. He made a fortune from it. Grew up dirt poor, was a terrific liar, and died rich on his nice ranch at the expense of American lives.

Wouldn't it be faster if the tunnel entrance was covered first.Then fold up the cloth to uncover half of the entrance then throw the Gas in? That way less of it would escape the tunnel.

CS tear gas is regular riot-control agent used by police around the world(used in Waco siege for example). Its use in war was only prohibited by CWC only in 1993 to prevent possible retaliation with stronger chemical weapons.

Those guys need shields or metal plates to carry into the tunnel. A bullet proof riot shield would be ideal to keep the tunnel rat a little safer in a direct confrontation!

if it was made of lexan and clear plastic it would not get in the way at all in or be heavy, in fact it might help to crawl on top of it and put it flat to the floor, also if you encounter anyway at least you have some kinda wall between ya. I'd even take a metal pot lid with me anything really that is shield like!

God damn, the comments on this video are fucking stupid. Most tunnels US servicement went into weren't even large enough to turn your body around, let alone barely crawl on all fours. A lot of the time soldiers couldn't even hold a flashlight and a handgun at the same time, but here you are saying "use a shield, derp". This was Vietnam, not pretend war.

@GeorgeMonet

How is using chemicals to empty a tunnel system of hostiles which you otherwise could not take out without casualties cowardly? Are you actually asking young boys to lose their lives just to avoid the use of chemicals to clear tunnels? If they weren't using chemicals, which could be much more humane than bullets or bombs, they'd be using bombs. Same result.
