This is a great video! I feel like media keeps wanting everyone to see that the Army is soft. But that was pretty comparable to the chowhall procedures that I went thru as a Marine Corps recruit In Parris Island, SC. The only difference that I really saw was that the trainees don’t respond back to y’all. Like if I were a Drill Sergeant and I corrected a trainee or told him/her to do something I would expect him/her to respond with “Yes Drill Sergeant”.

I remember my first meal at the defac after about a week of field feed and MREs. The night before, my drill sergeant smiled and asked us if we were excited for our first defac meal. When we responded with enthusiasm he smirked and said “so am I” there are no words in any language that can describe the massacre that took place the next morning at breakfast.

My battle buddy was on the fat-boy program and needed to lose like 15-20 lbs by the end of basic. Since he had to get his food from the diet chow line, this meant that I also had to eat in the same fat-guy cow line as him... With a diet and extra pt, he lost his 20 lbs and I was damn proud of him. But as his battle buddy, I eventually lost 25 lbs and looked like I came out of a prison camp.

@@jeffr7752 I felt bad for the guys that were on the restricted diet watching me consume 10,000 calories a day, yeah more mind games for them unfortunately I was the weapon of choice. I was lucky to not have any of guys in my room but at the same time they seen me get forced to sit with them. By 2 weeks they were at weight minus 1 guy but he was told to lose his last 2 lbs by himself and he lost almost 10. I think it took me 10 days to hit minimum ( 112 lbs ) by that time i was stacking on push-up muscle on top of my farm work muscles. Yeah if I'm ever on a deserted island and I see 4 guys with that look in their eyes I'm going for a long swim, it was 3 or 4 days in when you could tell they were starting to get irritated.

if anyone is watching this video bc they want to enlist, having just gone through basic training my humble advice would be to turn your brain off and reduce your vocabulary to yes/no Drill Sergeant and when your nervous to do a training event get to the front of the line and just get it done with. Because if your like me you went to the back of the line for the warrior tower and watched every one of your battle buddies go down while your anxiety mounted only to realize it was actually really fun. Nothing you do is hard, nothing you do is impossible and even though the cadre don't show it they do respect you for having the courage to step forward and serve your country, and when they dust you off its not personal, their just trying to make you into a soldier and that takes a few sessions of corrective training. Embrace it. Work with your battle buddies and above all embrace the suck. Complaining does not make a longline shorter, shivering does not make the air warmer and getting to the back of the line doesn't mean you wont still be lane two on rappel.

Also, don't get pissed off because your whole platoon got smoked due to one person screwing up. Nobody is perfect and the DS will use any and every reason to smoke you. If you don't give them a reason, they will find one anyway. Don't take it personal. It's to get you in shape and morning PT isn't enough.

I remember hearing a story from a battle buddy of mine. He was going through the line and there was a recruit in front of him who was taking too long to decide what to get. The choice was beef or fish. The DI comes up and starts yelling, "Beef or fish! Beef or fish! Just pick one recruit! What is taking so long!" The recruit gets flustered and yells, "BISH!" Things to prepare you: #1). Put your phone away and learn to exist without it #2). Take cold baths or showers to get used to being comfortable being uncomfortable #3). If you decide not to work out just please at least run every other day 2 miles. #4). Work out . #5). Practice rucking with gear ~30lbs This will be sufficient and i think everything else has to be learned there. This will get you started.

I went to basic halfway through my senior year in high school …. I only had 2 classes during first semester so i would take the bus there, but returned home on foot (1.8 miles) then rode my bike to work (2.1 miles) or to my kid brother’s elementary school (6.0miles) on days i didnt work with the bike set on its lowest hardest gear. I alternated weighted back pack and hiking boots with running shoes going from school to home. By December rolled around it was too icy to bike so i had switched to working mostly on the weekend with one 2-10 shift during the week and i would snowshoe diagonally across country to get from school to home , shorter distance but was a tougher slog.

1) All of this drill stuff results from the need to get large groups of soldiers efficiently organized and marching to wherever they need to go next, for training. 2) The yelling/hazing is something these young folks will heartily laugh at later, and a number of them will imitate (to everyone's hilarious delight) the Sergeants who delivered it. the differences in the service are incredible. In the USMC boot camp, a Drill Instructor was waiting to inspect every plate of chow for nutrition. If you were trying to get it right, he suggested. If you are a fat body, he damn near dumped your tray and personally reloaded it with a balanced meal. There is NEVER any kind of "sneaking by".

I went to the same place in this video back in 06' (I remember thousands of people being at the reception barracks - right next to the DS Academy, it was packed), the DFAC was the one place the DS were not yelling at you. Everyone stood up behind their seats until the entire platoon had their food - then everyone sat down and you had 5 minutes to eat. At 5 minutes they would say "3rd platoon, you're done" everyone would get up, turn their trays in, and exit the DFAC. No unnecessary yelling or anything. I guess the mentality was a bit different, they said 90% of everyone going there would be in Iraq/Afghanistan within 1 year of leaving BCT (during the surge). We still got smoked all day/every day (including directly outside the DFAC) - but inside the DFAC was the chill zone. Got to get them calories in...

Let me think back a few years…female drill sergeants were for females. Our clothes were pressed and the shirt tucked in. We were issued and wore extremely uncomfortable black combat boots and this what we lived in. No running shoes for PT. Ft. Dix in July and August. Half shelters for bivouac. Mosquitos tearing you up. All the drill Sargents were Vietnam vets, Jungle Warfare patches on, Special Forces, Rangers it was tough and I loved it. Will always remember the names of them too. My Platoon, Alpha 33, 1976.

1981 Most of mine were Vietnam Vets but not all. The combat vets were never physically abusive (They used that command voice but they only yelled during the shark attack but after that only when you screwed up or needed an attitude adjustment in the pit) but they were VERY serious dudes. BCT in 1969. Vietnam in 1970 and 71.. To this day I can remember my drill sergeants, SDI, XO and CO. What I learned 55 years ago when we held an M14 and we were constantly reminded that we were going to die, was that the human mind can only entertain one thought at a time. You can’t concentrate on how badly it hurts if you’re retracing the route from the college lab to the parking lot to your car. That got me through forced marches, endless drills, et cetera. I’d like to have a 20 year old body and go through it again. Went in at 215 and came out at 195.

Watching a lot of videos like this because I am super close to reaching my weight goal to join the military. My brother was an Army Ranger and I was inspired to stop being a fat ass and join the army. I lost over 60 pounds and these videos really motivate me to push harder. Being fat kinda helped me thought because it was like a bulk/food surplus so now I have huge muscles from resistance training (weights and other stuff) I just have to lose maybe another 20 pounds (which I did easily in a month and a half) and then I'll be ready.

This looks so fun . Im 19 and I wish i can enlist. I tried to in 2020 and then in 2021 for the Army. The ASVAB is the one that stops me. I know its a simple test. But im a terrible test taker with arithmetic mathematics and a history of a learning disability with math throughout my academic life. I did good on the practice tests the recruiters gave me but then did horrible at the verification test at MEPS. And it made me so upset because joining the Army was my passion. I hope that one day maybe in the future i can try again. Id love to have this experience. Great video!

I am a Navy veteran and retired Army 1SG. I had to do basic in both branches. I also did my time on the trail. Went in the Navy in the early 80’s and the Army late 80’s. Was an E2 during Navy basic and an E5 during Army basic. To me, they were fun as hell. Was 22 when I went in the Navy and enjoyed the hell out of it and the Army was much more fun. Nearly every private was doing their basic training during the summer between their junior and senior years of HS. Then, first day after being transferred from receiving/reception, I was assigned platoon guide. Meaning then that moment forward, I was their mommies and daddy’s for the duration. They had my packet when we were getting off of the cattle car. Loved the challenge though! This video, whatever this is…is too low key. No pistol belts anymore? It seems like there is a problem with the height and weight standards as well. Carry on! 🫡

Why did you have to re-do BCT with the Army? Only the Marines won't accept another branch's basic training. And basic as an E-5? Something isn't adding up here.

@@pyme495 what isn’t adding up? When I got out of the Navy, even with an RE-R1 reenlistment code, the Navy wanted me to do three years of reserve duty. I didn’t want to do that, would have been at COOPMINEUNIT at Kings Bay. I went to the Army prior to EAOS’ing from the Navy and (at that time…late 80’s) every branch was being very selective and was accepted into any branch but, I wanted a specific type of schooling. The Army had the school and I had Airborne added to the contract. I was also informed that I had to do basic again. That really pissed me off and do NOT know why that was a requirement. I met several prior service Navy guys during my Army career and they ALL had to do basic as well. My TS clearance transferred over and I lost a pay grade as well. Sonartech’s make paygrade quickly if you know your,$hit. When I stepped off the bus at Ft. Dix, reception or whatever they called it at that time, they were waiting for me. I was singled out immediately and was told how much different it will be for me. When the platoon was formed, I was assigned as platoon guide and was marching the platoon everywhere. I just didn’t know any army cadences…(hey man, that might be why they wanted me to do Army basic) and since I got out of the Navy and my HOR was Jax/Mayport…they sent me to Dix w/all schooling at Ft. Belvoir. I even had to do PLDC as an E5. There were three of us E5’s in PLDC. Army schools were easier than the Navy schools, at least to me. Perhaps due to the fact that my Navy schools, all in San Diego at NTC for BEEP and across the street at FLEASWTRACENPAC for all subsequent education. I enlisted for STS and once I was in school in Groton, I found out the hard way that I was claustrophobic. They had to re-do my contract for STG “A” and “C” school. All combined was there for about 70 weeks. Was an E4/STG3 upon graduating “A” school (pipelined) and was studying for E5 exam as I knew exactly which suite I was needing to study for. If you still cannot believe it, then it is on you. Adding up…man I can tell crap have done and seen till the cows come home but, if telling it to a person that has an agenda behind the ridicule, what is the d@mn point right? You may look up: STG and STS schooling, what pipeline was in early 1980’s, FLEASWTRACENPAC, my company in the Navy was 943 (drill company…did parades, football games, graduation ceremonies and I was the crack rifle squad RCPO). In the Army at Dix, my company was C co. 1/26 infantry. AIT was @ Belvoir, BNCOC and ANCOC as well. You may look up 52E and see what that was (I think it has changed and the school is now at Leonard Wood)…MOS 52E retired 52Z. Not much more I can add. Have all company (Navy) and platoon (Army) group photos. Cruise books from the Navy as well as basic books for both Navy and Army. Have dog tags and am unfortunately disabled veteran and have VA card as well as retired military card. Have bunches of scars from surgeries while on active duty (3 ACL operations on one knee that I injured at Camp Mackall) and bunch from the VA related to a life in uniform and Gulf War ailments. Anything else? 🤨😴🤣🤣🤣

@@pyme495 you are crazier than anything…why wouldn’t a person that was prior service NOT have to do basic if ordered so? Wow man, just because you have rank and your orders state basic training, then you go to basic training. Also, if not an NCO, you couldn’t go to that school. If you were E4(P) maybe but, I had no idea what a rank with a promotable letter behind the MOS even was…at that point. There might have been E4 P’s in there but, I never saw any. I just can’t get past the “ to adding up part” that you are struggling with! So, you have got to be trolling my @ss or…nothing will be gained by continuing this. I do remember having to “beat my face” every time a drill saw me as it was open season on the “squid” or “swab jockey”…cannot imagine that scrutiny unless there was something really odd to them…like I was a unicorn! Oh well, you may want to get a newer more accurate abacus! Maybe it will add up then.

I remember my first meal. This was August 1971, Ft. Knox Ky. Flew from Cleveland to Louisville. A bus met us and drove us to Ft Knox. AFter the amnesty box drill we ate chow at about 0030. Greasy undercooked burgers with drenched in grease half cooked fries.

I did basic back in the early 90's at Ft.Sill. The food there was not bad at all, which was a pleasant surprise from what I was expecting. The D.S. really didn't mess with you too much during lunch, except to get you through the line and out of the chow hall ASAP.

Well now let me see. it was late summer of 1978 at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Truth be told I only have a few memories of Army Basic Training chow time. I do remember some Drill Sgts busting chops. I learned to get in and out and keep the portions small. I learned pretty quick how to get through the days. Now and then though I thought I was smarter than some of the Drill Sgts and found out. By the end of it all I went out of my way to say 'Thank you Drill Sgt' to as many of them as I could. Changed my life.

I went through BCT back in the late 90's. However, I was unable to complete the BCT because of medical problems - my left knee gave out DURING one day. I miss the times I had the few weeks I was at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. My MOS was to be Patriot Missile Systems Operator/Maintainer. They tried to have me stay IN and repeat the BCT because of my knowledge of electronics. But, I couldn't stay in. I sometimes wonder what could have been ... HOOAH !!! 😉👍

I was 19K OSUT at Fort Knox from Sep-Dec 1991 and our DS never made us do any of this, but we saw other cycles doing it. Our chow time was very chill and relaxed, no eat it now and taste it later at all........maybe it's a 11B thing :)

Wow! Not much has changed since I was in BCT during the Vietnam Days. I remember trying to eat off my tray as the DI's were screaming "Get out of the Mess Hall". I learned to never be the Last Man in line because the Last Man had to hold the Mess Hall Door open for the Trainees to enter the Mess Hall. After all were inside, the Last Man was the last one to get served chow resulting in the DI's screaming "To get out". I remember standing at Parade Rest, Coming to Attention, Stepping Forward, then Back to Parade Rest Again in the line. I remember no talking in the Mess Hall. I remember not being allowed to drink soda pop. We were only allowed to drink water, milk, juice, or punch. We were not allowed cake, cookies, or pie because it made you Fat. The Fat Boys were on a diet of Salad only. The DI's ran us and we did so much PT we all dropped 20-30 pounds or more. At the end of AIT, I had lost a total of 20 pounds. One Recruit lost 50 pounds. He was very tall and big when he started BCT. At the end of AIT, he was all trimmed his family could not believe it was him. We called him "Big Foot". Not much has changed except when I was in the Army, the DI's CURSED at us all the time. I was at Ft. Benning The Home of Infantry so we did not have Female DI's. Females were not allowed to serve in Combat Arms Mos back then.

Back in the Seventies, it was in the open like you see in the Movies The Boys in Company C and Full Metal Jacket with Lee Emery playing the DI. it was like that, constabt Cursing and Verbal Abuse Breaking You Down, Making You Feel Like Crap All The Time So You Learn To Conform And Do Things The Army Way. They The DI Transform US From Being A Bunch Of Uncoordinated Out Of Shape Knuckleheads Into A Team Of Soldiers Who Were Ready To Kill The Enemy. When The DI Ssid Move, We Moved. I look back on those years and have no regrets because it taught me to survive, never quit or give up, and how to lead and not be a follower. It also taught me how to be strong and overcome fear. I was in BCT 1970. The DS were tough and hard!! They used the 'hands on' approach and verbal abuse. You were called a trainee, not soldier!! You just sucked it up and trained. With a shooting war going on, there was no time to spare your feelings!!!! Ten years later, I returned to BCT as a Senior Drill Sergeant. Times had changed. The type of soldier changed and the 'rules of engagement' a DS could use had changed. You could still be firm in training, just not like WE had back in 1970!!!! HOOAH!!!!

I recall the DFAC at Fort Jackson which was next to Reception. Huge room, very high ceilings, and flags of every state hanging down. We ate there for 2 weeks or so during the reception process. We never ate there again after getting picked up by our Drill Sergeants. Fun fact: The food in the DFAC during BCT is actually very good. The only problem is you can expect to get no more than 2-3 minutes to eat. Sit down, eyes down, no talking, and inhale your food quickly. A few people tried to continue eating off their plate while walking to the trash can, but the DS's don't like that too much. We never had coffee or soda, just water, milk, OJ, and "Victory punch" whatever that was.

I spent a week at 120th reception and, after the deaths of family members and other tragedies, *reception was seriously the worst experience I've ever had in my life* (especially being forced to stand around, stand around, and stand around for literally several hours at a time, even late at night out in the cold when you were long done with processing for the day. Also only being allowed just a few minutes to eat). If you forced me to choose between repeating the two plus months of actual basic or the week of reception, I would rather choose going through actual basic again over that week of reception. I can't believe you actually had to go through, *not one week, but TWO weeks* or so of reception.

AIT chow was much more relaxed. Permanent duty station you could go wherever you wanted as long as you were back by 13:00. PLDC was (almost) like Basic again.

@@golfery5119 I have been told some people stay in Reception much longer than I did. There are reportedly tons of new people that arrive in the summer time as the high schools graduate. If they have the same staffing levels year round, you can see how it would back up. I agree with you that it was tedious, but it could have been worse. We did get smoked several times by the one Drill Sergeant who oversaw us. I have more of a gripe with Exodus, which fell right about the halfway mark for me in BCT. I am all for Soldiers going home for the holidays, but interrupting BCT for it is frankly a bad idea. Everyone went home wearing plain Class A's with no insignia, got fat, dumb, and happy in the civilian world for two weeks, and then had to come back. It was like Red phase all over again. I wish I could have just stayed and completed BCT in one shot.

I would have rather just went straight myself. And yeah it seemed like our last two weeks after we got back the drill sergeants got harder on us when it seemed like they got more chill right before leave. Won't forget the second to last sunday where three drill sergeants smoked our whole company because somebody misplaced his laundry bag.

I remember we had to memorize our general orders, the Chain of Command, President to Post company commander, they would be screaming what is your first general order, who is the Vice President?, it was intense, we had to have our military ID out and show it, if you didn't have it, left it in the your locker you had to get it and you did not get extra time to eat. If you were in the right place in line, you could order eggs to order, but none of us did that (after a couple weeks when it calmed down a little). We couldn't drink any coffee, but when we started getting MRE's, I would get the instant coffee packets, the hot water in the latrine was hot, I would get up 10 minutes early, go with my canteen cup, run the tap water and have hotish coffee. Looking back it was fun, it sucked at the time. The food was never an issue for us.

I went through basic in the mid 70's at Ft. Dix and we didn't go through this but I do remember the best Army meal I ever had, well it was paid for by the Army. It was when we left basic and headed to our AIT station and stopped off at a Morrison's cafeteria where they gave us food vouchers. So after eating basic training chow for 8 weeks, it was great. I was sent to the Panama Canal Zone for 2 years and must say though that I have no complaints about our mess hall there. Good food and a nice clean mess hall courtesy of the mess sergeant who took good care of us.

Ft Dix, B-3-3 1979… good time to be in the Army. All our DS were Vietnam combat Vets and didn’t do a lot of the yelling. You could tell they had seen a lot, and we would get bits and pieces of their stories through their yelling..They tended to single out the ‘non-hackers’ and push them, although we shared their pushups. ‘Front leaning rest position!!!!’ It wasn’t rocket science, but it was to some, and there were still guys (I remember one in particular and his name) who the judge would offer ‘jail or the Army’ . D-3-3 were given all the women, and we got all the dirt bags.. the army had phased out the WACS and they were starting to be assimilated with the males in basic. January 1981, Reagan became president and the Army started to change.

After we left Morrison's, we arrived at the base at dusk. The bus pulled up to the company area and out walked a DS towards the bus. A collective "Oh shit, not again" broke out throughout the bus. He stepped onto the bus and gave us a nice warm greeting, welcoming us and asking if we were all hungry. That since we would be arriving late, they saved some sandwiches for us in the day room. We all were thinking that this was a ruse and that he was screwing with us and setting us up for the kill. Turns out he wasn't. All the DS's treated us good. Heard that changed about 3 years later when they turned it into One-Stop training and how they eased off just a little after completing the BT phase, but not much.

I went to Ft Devens for AIT, 05 ditty bop school for 6 months…time of my life.. No PT. Form up, march off to school, 8 hours, form up and march back… we had some suicides, because listening to Morse code for 8 hours a day was insane.😵‍💫… my fav food was SOS. In BT, they despised the guys going to MI, so we 6 had KP 3 times in basic.. 💩..I was in Germany for 2.5 years. First Thanksgiving, we had candles, wine, tablecloths in the mess hall… something I’ll never forget.

First AIT was at Ft. Gordon in 1981. 31J. A 20 week course. No Drills. It was no different than being in a regular unit. In 1983 went from USAR to RA and reclassed to 16S. AIT portion of OSUT at Ft. Bliss as a prior service. Stricter than Gordon but the DS's throttled back considerably from the BCT phase so the first timers told me. We were off every weekend in AIT phase. @@joed9491
