Beard's monologue was great and all but this was Ted's greatest manipulation. "I hope we are all all judged by our weakest moment or none of us are." Delivered with smile and optimism at the moment of their highest achievement so far. Beard had no other way than to remember how it all could have been different for him and that it is time to pay it forward. He threatened Rupert with darts same way. I like this dimension of Ted's character. Kinda makes him more complete. People always connect manipulation with negative or selfish results but even in this Ted is different. When he manipulates it is only to help. Roy got manipulated into being a captain, Beard into forgiveness. Edit: We've established in comments that term "manipulation" is wrong one. "Influencing" is correct term here. It's a lost in translation mistake because my language has single word for both.
@nosoupforyou Жыл бұрын
manipulation is getting people to do things that aren't good for them. this definitely is not manipulation.
@DiviNazuphus11 ай бұрын
I would struggle to really call it manipulation. What he does is point out why it is the right decision to make for themselves, and lets them make the decision on their own. He pushes them in the direction with his suggestions, but he genuinely believes its the right choice for them and that is why he does it. But he doesn't really put any unwanted pressure, the pressure comes from the person knowing that the right decision can be made and not making it is only hurting themselves and those around them.
@MarshalLtd11 ай бұрын
@@DiviNazuphus I had this huge essay sized paragraph written. Decided to look into dictionary. "Influencing" is the term I should have used. Manipulation is by definition for selfish or self-interest benefits. Influencing is for growth of receiving person. So I was linguistically wrong. Although they are done same way.
@freeatlas837710 ай бұрын

@@BigTulsaI got uncomfortable rewatching cause he does seem to manipulate him. The more I watch the show though, I think Ted’s whole thing is speaking with people in their way. Ted and Beard talking it out would never really work, Beard is to cagey when it comes to personal emotional things, so Ted shows him a video of himself (metaphor). No need to be confrontational or speak down to his friend, just shows him Beard is now on the other side of the same situation and he has the opportunity and agency to forgive Nate. I absolutely adore this scene for Beard's incredible subtlety. Especially his tone on the line "Then I stole from my friend." It's so clear that despite his previous mistakes landing him in prison it was what he did to Ted that he truly felt guilty for. And later, how his body relaxes as he hugs Nate, visibly committing to his own forgiveness and allowing himself to love Nate again - it's incredibly well done.
@JeanBaptisteQueru7 ай бұрын
I love your perspective. It got me thinking along the following lines: I think this goes further: Beard has been carrying a debt to Ted for all those years, being faithfully by his side and helping him be sucessful (e.g. Beard learns a lot about soccer so that he can better support Ted). At this point, Beard knows his debt is paid, and that he is now free to leave Ted's side, which is why he can decide to stay in London when Ted returns to Kansas. That's why Ted's monologue is so important: it indirectly gives Beard permission to leave, I hear it as "I will judge you based on whether you show strength or weakness right now." While other characters have story arcs that span the whole series, Beard's unfolds in those few minutes.

2:40 - Up until this point, the best and most alluring quality of Beard in this story, was his rat-a-tat humor with Ted. ...and then we see him at the door with the man he loathes most. It's not humor that's the reason Beard is in this story...it's ferice, undying loyalty that Coach Beard is around. Unbeknowist to Ted, Coach is his brother bodyguard, the man we hope all of us men have to have our backs when we are lost (just like Ted was to Beard). And he's making a statement to Nate - "Because of my love for Ted, and because he believed in me, I'll believe in you" ..."but also know, I will end you if I even think for a second that you would harm a hair on that man's head who forgave me when I didn't deserve it or didn't deserve a second chance when no one else would give me one.: THAT is the power of Ted Lasso - the power of what forgiveness and belief can do.
