Fun fact about Ramona’s cat: her cat’s name is Gideon, and in the graphic novel, Scott initially thinks that when she talks about Gideon, she’s talking about her cat, to eventually thinking Gideon her ex IS the cat, to finally realizing that the cat is just a cat named Gideon for her to process the break up.

It’s where she keeps her big ass hammer. 😂 It’s in the movie too Btw, there’s a 3 minute animated adaptation of the part of the comic where Scott and Kim met and became a couple, inlcuding Scott fighting all those guys. Also, you can read on the clapperboard that the DoP is Jan De Pope. It's a nod to Jan De Bont and Bill Pope, two famous DoPs. De Bont worked on various movies including Die hard, The hunt for Red october and Basic instinct and he also directed Twister and the two Speed Pope worked on dozens of movies including the 3 first Matrix, Baby driver, The world's end and... Okay, so the movie is a more faithful adaptation of the graphic novel series, with a few things changed or removed entirely due to the fact that six volumes were adapted into a movie that was under two hours in length. This show is more of a What If? scenario. Which works because, otherwise the show would be just be the graphic novels in animated form and at that point you might as well read the comics. Also, as a comic book fan it's not offensive to call graphic novels comic books, because that's what they are. Graphic novels are simply a comic book with glossier paper and a bigger page count. That's really the only difference between a comic book and a graphic novel.

I absolutely love the original movie, but I have to say I prefer the anime to be a sort of sequel to the movie that goes in depth into the characters and why they turned evil in the first place

I sorta wished it would've been a straight adaptation of the comics rather than a sort of chopped up one that doesn't really pay attention to the character development and slice of life drama which the movie was. But when we heard the anime was gonna be 8x26 which is only like twice the length of the movie I realized it would still have been pretty abridged and now I'm glad the runtime was used for a new story as well

I know that this Netflix series is technically an alternate timeline/reality or whatever. But imo this is practically a sequel. And you right in the beginning. Watching the movie/reading the graphic novel is almost required and more importantly it builds upon the relationships of the first one, fleshes out Scott and Ramona's dynamics and their parallels. The movie fleshed out Scott, and here we get everybody else's perspectives with Ramona at the center.

My take: neither is a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel series (but that doesn't make them bad per say, just not supplementary to the source material) The movie is more faithful on the surface and definitely does the vague plot thread of "Scott defeats evil exes, gets girl" and the first half a hour or so are almost word for word and has a ton of the exact same jokes, scenes and setpieces but due to factors like the runtime and the format and the comic not being completed yet it doesn't really adapt what the story is about or some of my favorite major moments at all and overall kinda goes off in its own direction by the time they get to what would be volume 4 in the comics/graphic novels. They would really have needed a trilogy or a TV show to do the story justice. Scott's characterization also comes off strangely wimpy and Ramona feels almost cold/indifferent in it. It's definitely the more expected adaptation but it's missing SO much The anime has some elements that are more faithful in terms of vibe and characterization. Scott and Ramona for instance feel more like themselves, they do some gags from the comic like the fourth wall break in ep.1, it allows more drama alongside the full on comedy like the graphic novels do as opposed to the very full tilt comedy movie, and of course it has the iconic Scott Pilgrim art style, but the storyline is totally new and something I would never have expected

i went into it without knowing anything about the anime version (apparently the creator said it wasn't going to be a retelling of the comics) i figured i liked scott pilgrim enough to buy the comics/graphic novels after watching the movie, and i did buy the movie on bluray, but it had been such a long time since i've seen either. after the first ep i was so confused, but then i realized...ooh new story! a lot of ppl didn't like that it was so ramona focused, but i always liked ramona, so i was fine with it. i like that it's a new version of the story and not a retelling. i'll be glad to own this show too when it comes out on bluray (hoping it does).

I see it as a direct sequel of the movie (or in video game terms: New Game + where the player chooses a different outcome). It gives the established characters more interactions with other characters and thus fleshes them out more.

I agree, Stephanie. Given the premise of this story, it’s more suited in a anime format than a live action movie, although the movie itself was pretty genius just as it is unique. It’s also pretty cool that everyone here is from the original cast since they voiced this characters before in real life that, it’s irreplaceable. The one thing I did noticed is that in the first episode, both of the Katayanagi Twins spoke when in the movie, they never said a word because they were having a battle of the bands using their keyboard. Overall, I’d prefer this than the movie.
