On Coffee Episode 14, JC Shurburtt responds to an e-mail from a listener citing concerns that South Carolina Gamecocks football fans have expressed on new offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who was the play caller for the Gamecocks' 21-17 upset loss to Illinois in the Citrus Bowl and who will be the coordinator for a much-anticipated 2025 football season which will feature the return of star quarterback LaNorris Sellers. There are some key points to be made about Shula and also the history of offensive coordinators and offense as a topic as it relates to the South Carolina football program.

JC, my name is Chad and I'm 62 yrs. old now and I remember the Joe Morrison "black magic" era like yesterday. I didn't miss a home game or the Clemson game at "death valley" in 1984. Like all Carolina fans. I felt like someone had jumped up and down and stomped my guts during and after the infamous Navy game. Still haunts me til this day, you know?

Lanorris sure seemed hesitant to run against Illinois. I am sure hoping that isn't Shulas plan going forward

I think not having Rocket Sanders really hurt. Addaway is OK in spells, but not as an every down back. We need to develop atop running back. Hopefully the back from Utah will work out.

100%. I loved having a big bruiser at RB who got better as the game progressed. I hope we can find another like him.

Missing Rocket was a massive detriment to the offense in pass protection and short yard passing game on top of the running threat everyone already knows him for. Adaway just isn't a headlining back. Hopefully Fuller and Howell are prepared to take a big step forward, theyre the big power backs we're going to need to be successful. Faison is a believe it when I see it back. Great against lesser competition and a bit smaller, but he could have the skill to make up for it.

Muschamp obviously wasn't an offensive coordinator but he was also offensively blind. His understanding of strategy was stunningly ignorant. It's not as much the scheme it's whether you can excute the scheme.

When Lanorris gets pissed he is unstoppable. He combines QB power run with rolling out and finding open receivers or running it. If we run a lot of that our offense will be good. Just IMO

Just a thought, but maybe a look at each opponent for 2025 would be cool. Who they lost who they added, things like that. People love to talk about the Ole Miss portal class, but they don't talk about who they lost.

I thought the illi Defensive Scheme had something to do with Sellers Not Running The Ball Much… They had 2 DB’s lined up really close to the line that didn’t fall off much into coverage-Especially early on in that game which may have helped in “Setting the Tone” in a Young QB’s Mind-And especially if Shula was already trying to get Sellers to take the Safety Valve when needed!!! We still came up just one completed pass away from a W or at least the lead with 3 minutes remaining!!! Not so Bad… Course We All Want That Pass Back and The W!!!

I also think it was a combination of things. It's unfortunate. Few things go different and we win...

Thinking that’s gonna be a Hard Narrative to Change JC!!! I don’t think it’s such a Bad thing for Sellers to Throw to his Safety Valve more often… I mean your QB isn’t supposed to be the Leading Rusher 🤔 Maybe a Game or Two… Sellers has shown that he has that ability so folks are gonna want to see it… Especially if it’s-in their/our minds-The Difference in a Win or Loss 🤷‍♂️😊👍 Spurs Up☝️ Go Gamecocks!!! 🏈🏆✅

Quarterback running is not long-term success. Mike knows that. Look at the great teams in the playoffs. You must throw the ball effectively. Run only on occasions.

Carolina Illinois offense did not look the same as latter half of season. I recall a Shula interview as OC commenting on LS running where he intimated his job is to see the receivers so the run would not be necessary. Here is the vid: kzbin.infohT5PayRHI8g?si=r0YvnOa4Q1aUhuzc
