I have used hairspray in the past to make the silverware more matt as well. Worked great.

Hand held small laser positioned near and inline with the camera lens, the laser light will bounce off the subject and show the position of where to put or not put a light.
@JohnDawson5 жыл бұрын
Two words: cross polarization You mentioned a polarized filter for the lens, but that's just half of the solution. You have to also polarize the light. Just get a polarized sheet (from Amazon) and put it in front of the light. Then simply adjust the CPL filter on your lens until the reflection magically disappears.

Great Tips! I really like the tips of using a large diffuser panel and light to imitate soft window light, or using matt metal spoons or using matt spray. Some cool tricks. The latest one coming from Karl Taylor Education site this month is using transluscent Light Cones (with opening at the top for lens) which really softens reflections on metal curved surfaces. However a person could also use a light tent. The only issues with these is the limitations of space of easily moving objects around in a cone or within a small light tent. I have a large light tent around 30 in. wide and that works fairly well so I can get in and move objects for composition very fast. Then I use double diffuser 24 in. softboxes with lights as well. Thanks for these great tips on matt surface cutlery or angling cutlery. However if the composition includes a wide table top wood texture surface, a light tent may not work and your large panel diffuser is the best way.

Just as a fyi, metal surfaces do not reflect polarized light. An example of polarized light is when you are indoors and look towards a window. The reflection of light you see on a hardwood floor is polarized and can be neutralized with e.g. a cirular polarized filter. So if your shooting surface is reflecting your light, or you have reflections on e.g. wooden handles then those you most likely can kill off with a filter. There's much much more to the physics, but that's the quick and dirty of it.

Only problem with Mod Podge spray is that it's semi-permanent, and quite toxic when spraying. Fine if you have dedicated prop utensils but not if you plan to eat with them again. Instead, "dulling spray" (such as Krylon K01310007) is formulated for photography and cinema use and will wipe off easily when you're done.

Dennis Prescott actually also uses scuffed up cutlery or ones with patina which would naturally diffuse reflections instead of directly reflecting the light. So old well worn silverware would also work quite well. I learnt this tip in one of his videos.

Note on PL filtes: any reflection can be polorised, except metal refections. A mirror has a reflection due to the silver backing - you can't polorise away the image in a mirror.

Joanie, a tip from a video editor, just mind your cross dissolves... You've got jump cuts happening under some of the dissolves as you go from an image back to yourself. You need to change the dissolve effect to either start or end at the cut (depending on the video layer under it), rather than be in the middle of the cut. Other people might not have noticed, but they were a bit jarring to this ol' veteran ;) Also, matte spray for the win!

Cover it in chocolate. Your spoon will thank you. Silly question but ... in the glaring spatula/spoon beginning of your training video your main lighting was coming from the large side light, yes? So where was the glare coming from? There was no light above the camera to create a reflection. Was the reflection caused by the reflective angle bouncing off the wall opposite the side light onto the spatula/spoon? I don't do food photography, I watch you for the technical information you expertly provide which applies to any photography setting. Great video, as always. and Happy Valentine's Day.
