Y'all, it's not normal to invade a _stranger's_ personal space w/o consent. Sure, there are plenty of cultures where acquaintances and friends are affectionate, but going out of your way to cross boundaries (especially with a foreigner) is disrespectful. Plus, in many Asian societies, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body and for it to be touched is a major offense. Koreans don't get any slack for invading boundaries.

Many asians hate been touched why should anyone tolerate when is the other way around??? It is self-compromising to accept such occurance as a norm!!!! The act of laying down a boundery is universal!! @nirbija5 жыл бұрын
@Sara Cruze No it is not "disrespectful' if you are an uninvited guest in someone's home space! This 'hair touching' is done all over the world; because people are fascinated with strange, foreign hair. African people are known to do 'hair touching' to foreign, non-African hair in Africa. And when people are 'living on top of each other' in overpopulated Asian countries, your mindset of 'personal space' you are going to find is way overrated. When you go to the home space of others, especially if you are uninvited guest, you had better go with an 'open mind' (as is often repeated in these videos); otherwise foreign travel to another culture is not for you.

LOL I live in Texas and was spot on about the guessing. I also enjoyed my visit to Busan & Seoul! You really have to open your mind and hearts while traveling to ANYWHERE. Research the culture; find understanding and patience - in that you'll learn a lot more about yourself, as well. In such a homogeneous country - it's not uncommon that someone will stare and ask can they touch your hair or your skin. It's not rude if you ask "why?" either. Analogy: If you travel to Dubai and see a camel to ride, it's different from riding a horse - so most definitely, you'll want to touch it before your experience. I learned that touching my hair wasn't rude towards me but curiosity cleared.

@@@jammyn7368 So you used the Spanish speakers inside an English speaking culture as an example, to help trash your own misguided position? Sweet. lol Did you note the man's favorite dish? It's Korean! Not soul food! lol This means that the mother's Korean influence has not been absent on an offspring that spent his youth as a wanderer in his military family. Why don't you tell us the "family history", if you have inside information. From this video, there does not seem much of a 'family history' to determine the woman's history & circumstances, including Korean fluency? Truth is: Knowing Koreans to be big on their history and culture, there are most likely serious mitigating influences. Having a child of mixed-race in a racist and race-centered nation of America, it was best for the offspring to have African American Cultural Identity as early and as much as possible -- African-Native American mix as example. In this way, the mixed up offspring would be less likely to have to deal with the valid question often asked of mixed up offspring, "Are you Black enough?" I'm just putting that example out there; I don't have the information to be more conclusive.

I think that he has a good perspective on things in Korea...connecting with his Mothers side. I’m happy for him. The only thing I object to is his option on the idea of them petting us. We are humans not a different specie. Plain...flat out...ignorance ! People of the African diaspora has open their arms to the Koreans to establish themselves, build their own economies in their lands, so they’re not knowing about us is not an excuse for their ignorance. Those who benefit off of the lands have a obligation to dispel these stereotypes.
@michaelhayes42315 жыл бұрын
What makes you think that Koreans think that black people are a different species? That would make Koreans more racist than whites, which they aren't. The only person that's mentioned 'species' here is you.

Excellent interview! Great way to showcase the beauty of Korean culture while respectfully keeping it real. I taught there about 10 years ago and have dear friends I met there, both Korean and foreign and I think this interview accurately describes such an experience in the ROK. Well done!

Korean people don’t know their great ancestors looked JUST like this man here. It wasn’t until groups spread out of Africa and into areas populated by other Ancient humans then mixed that they became lighter and looked different.

Earnest is 100% correct. He couldn't have explained it any other way. Also being half Korean and American (black), I have been lucky enough to experience Korean as a Korean do. And yes the personal space is something you have to get used to.

I face this issue as a biracial Filipino. My dad is Filipino and my mom is Puerto Rican but I am called everything from mixed white and black to everything in between...its a very polarized world out there with alot of ignorance. I've faced that alot more recently from Filipinos...who sometimes even say "You're not a real Filipino"...

He is a handsome, articulate young man. He looks like a person from the south Pacific islands, like Tonga, Fiji, etc., or in other words, Polynesian. As for some stranger invading my personal space by touching my hair, body or whatever, I don't think I could ever get used to that because it seems so RUDE. If they asked me first, it wouldn't be as bad, but to just touch a stranger because you are "curious", no!
@yukoyamada19584 жыл бұрын
He definitely looks like Polynesian. And I agree with you. I hate when people can invade my personal space in any kind of way

I must say, while I understand seeing someone/thing in real life for the first time and being amazed by how it really looks or feels as opposed to what you may have seen from afar, I don't understand how one can have basic knowledge of biology, and be so completely befuddled by two parents of different colors creating a child, or different color skin or hair or different texture; all people in Asia don't have the same hair color body type eyes skin, skin, etc....also keeping in mind that Korea has a long history with interactions with other Asian countries - Korea and Japan for instance - so they must have some understanding of different people in different cultures unless, are they similarly confused by people who have dual Asian heritage?

This guys is really intelligent his insight on korean people and the culture is on point 👍
