Michael absolutely didn’t want to do the Victory album or Victory Tour; he got bullied into it by his brothers (who needed money) and his parents, who wanted MJ to help his brothers make money. He was opposed to Don King being the promoter; he was opposed to the greed-based ticketing system, where tickets were distributed by a lottery system, but in order to get into the lottery, you had to pay upfront for the tickets - in blocks of four (at $30 a piece, so $120 upfront, and for 1984 that was expensive, artists like Prince and Bruce Springsteen didn’t charge $30 per ticket.) If you didn’t get picked during the lottery, you were then refunded. The brothers were all for it; MJ said it would be a public relations disaster, and in the end, it was. To fix it, MJ donated all the money he made from the tour to a few different charities, meaning he was performing on a tour he didn’t want to do for free. He called a press conference after a young fan’s letter reached him. She said she’d saved up money for her and her mom to go but then learned she needed to pay for four tickets, not 2, and could not do so. Michael read the letter aloud, announced the lottery and four ticket requirement was ended and announced he’d donate all his money from the tour. That young fan and her mom got to see the concert for free. And then there is the sponsorship. Once they realized they needed a corporate sponsor because the elaborate shows needed funding to pull them off, they negotiated a deal with Quaker Oats. Everything was finished with the negotiations on that deal; all they had left was an upcoming meeting where the contracts would be signed. That’s when Don King came in and announced he’d signed them to the Pepsi deal (apparently, he could just sign the contracts without consulting the Jacksons), so now the group was bound to the Pepsi contract and had to kill the Quaker deal. And, as everyone knows, Pepsi hired less than the best for setting up that one commercial and Michael paid the price, with the 3rd degree burns to his scalp, that left him with a future of repeated surgeries, lifelong pain, and one of those surgeries (I think it was all repeated skin grafts and removal of scar tissue) coincided with the first accusations against MJ. Probably without him even realizing until it was too late, the pain medicine that got him through the post-surgery recovery also dulled the pain and stress of being accused of such a horrid crime, and he became addicted. All that was the result of Michael’s family wanting to ride his success with Thriller. (I even read the brothers wanted to make Off The Wall a Jacksons album, but Michael said no.) I love the music of the J5/Jacksons, but Michael is the only good decent human being of all the brothers. Jermaine and Randy are the worst. Randy has a terrible temper and supposedly beat his wife when she was pregnant. Watch “Michael Jackson: Looking For Neverland” - it’s on here and Prime Movies. It’s based on a book by two of MJ’s bodyguards that became his loyal friends and who were conveniently sidelined by AEG, with MJ’s manager disregarding Michael’s telling him to get those two bodyguards plane tickets so they could join him in LA during This Is It rehearsals. One was going to just go anyway, a day after getting a call from MJ and knowing something was wrong. He never got there, MJ died that same day. The movie shows an incident with Randy at MJ’s house that pretty much shows what kind of person he is. Both of those bodyguards became two of the few people that Michael could genuinely trust with his own safety and that of his children. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, and thought MJ was killed by that azzh*** doctor because he was just uncaring, reckless, negligent. But after watching that, I can’t help but wonder if there was more to it, as many say. Jermaine took advantage of MJ’s stress during the trial, and since he’s Nation of Islam, he started bringing Farrakhan and a whole bunch of Nation of Islam members for added security. This did not sit well with Debbie Rowe, who is Jewish, and she was following the trial. This was the only time prior to MJ’s death that she got involved in an issue involving the kids (remember, she signed away her parental rights) and called MJ and reminded him his children were half-Jewish and that Farrakhan/Nation of Islam was very anti-Semetic. MJ told Jermaine not to bring them around anymore. Jermain also brought one of his out-of-wedlock children to some family event, and I’m a little hazy on the details, but he was still married, and his wife was already at the event (maybe helping Katherine and others set up) and well, that went over like a lead balloon.

A couple things went wrong in that performance, and while MJ showed his was somewhat frustrated that it didn’t go perfectly, he was teasing throughout. Siedah Garrett accidentally sang some of MJ’s lines and he looks at her like “WTAF?” but after they get back on track, he’s smiling about it. And the background music track they were singing over kept playing for several minutes beyond what it was supposed to, forcing MJ and SG to keep improvising variations on the chorus of IJCSLY until MJ did sing “Brad what are you gonna do” because it seemed like it would never end. Before that he sang “It’s a breakdown” & (as you mentioned also) “Job’s gone” but he didn’t actually fire him. (Siedah later told the story of singing his line by accident, her recounting of that story is pretty funny, though at the time, she was initially upset with herself for the mistake.)

I wish people would stop thinking just because it’s fan made it safe. I’ve had fan made videos get copyrighted by the record label because of sampling or singing the lyrics.
