In the Jewish religion circumcision was the covenant God made with Abraham. All Jewish boy babies had to be circumcised Genesis17 : 10-14. God spoke to Abraham " This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you and thy seed after you. Every male among you shall be circumcised. ".

My hubby and I are married 24yrs, Im Jamaican, he is American, raised in the south. We talk about our cultures all the time, and find that we have a lot of similarities. Jamaican fried dumplings is very similar to biscuits. Porridge / Grits. Ive been living in the US since I was a young girl, but with age, Im becoming steeped in my culture. My husband has similar beliefs, he works, the money goes in the bank and his wife takes care of everything. When I complained about having to manage it all, he set it up on automatic payments LOL.. ofcourse doing the bills together is another way of bonding lol... but yes when a man gives you his paycheck, that is the ultimate in I trust you. We are more alike than different. I have so much to say, but my fingers wont type as fast as my mind is working.

Modern Jamaican men are domesticated. Men in my generation 60 plus will not lift a finger. They would get lost in the kitchen if he needs a glass of water. Jamaican men today are different today, They do house work which is good. Women still manages the money in Jamaica. .. We are the planners in the relationship. We move the family forward. We seek out the housing and how to manage the household finances. We learn money management skills in schools in Jamaica . I learn it at school and home from the age of 6. In some schools they ask the parents to give the childlren money and the teacher take them to the suoermarket to purchase food. ThEy learn how to budget .The food is cooked and provided meals for them in school.

I've seen this many times and what I admire about you two, is you two try to work together in spite of your differences. This is a very difficult thing. Sometimes it happens where the one wants you to adjust to everything in their culture but not adjusting to each other. It has to be mutual and compromise has to be part of it.

Happy New Year! This is such a great topic. Pre-defined gender roles have evaporated as more people are embracing their roles based on their strengths, needs, and circumstances. When two people come together they aren’t just merging their personalities, but also their values, experiences, and perspectives. A great part of any relationship is how each partner is open to communication which allows each to support the other in both easy and tough moments. It looks like you two are both embracing this mindset! I Love this for you, beautiful.

My story is so similar! I grew up in Charlotte, NC, and my husband grew in rural Clarendon. Most of his beliefs are the same as Kemar, except for the breakfast cooking. After being in the US for awhile, he realized how much weight he was gaining from eating so much starch from ground food. It's because in JA, most ppl need a full breakfast because they do a lot of walking and most men do a lot of physical work, and so they don't get big from eating like that. But in the US, most men do office jobs and would get so fat if they ate like that, and also sleepy! As for the circumcision, I don't know the full meaning, but it is definitely in the Bible. As a nurse in the US, we were told in school that the purpose was for hygienic reasons, saying that men who were not circumcised were not as clean in that area. I know that is not true! As far as the gay thing, I also had a good guy friend as a child who was gay, but we didn't really understand that he was gay until high school. Ppl were still very mean to him, but these days, it is accepted. Nowadays, there are many gay Jamaicans, most of them move to foreign to be accepted. I believe that relationships should be 50/50, unless my man was paying all the bills by himself. I almost fell of the chair laughing about the Suck seed thing!! 😅

I'm a black American woman and my man was born and mostly raised in the Bahamas and we both live together in the Turks and Caicos Islands. My family is from South Carolina but I was born and raised in Miami. I don't care to eat a lot of Bahamian breakfast dishes so because he's a chef he'll cook for himself most of the time. The differences balance out but I'm with Katanya our food choices are different because we're trying not to eat so much ground food. We both grew up in 2 parent homes so we have a lot in common with that and he's 7y younger so we don't have a certain amount that each of us pay we do what needs to be done.

Hey Bonnicks in your discussion about circumcision , It’s not a must in most cultures . Why most mothers have it done to their sons is because of something called Phimosis which can cause urine not to be released properly and the tightness of the skin over the penis. I, worked with patients where I’ve seen the penis being strangled by the tight skin. Therefore to keep the natural beauty the skin has to be pulled back from very early on in life.

There are many Jamaican men who can cook, clean house and do the grocery shopping better than some women and will treat their wives as an equal partner. But, unfortunately, there are those Jamaican men who were spoiled by their mothers and they expect their wives to become their mothers. These Jamaican men acts like they are a guest in their own home and wants concierge services to be provided by their wives.They follow their wives on vacation as it is the wives who does all the planning and mapping of the itinerary. I think when you are in Jamaica, you do as the Jamaicans do, but when you are in America, you have to adapt to a different lifestyle. When you marry a non-Jamaican, it’s an exciting experience as you get to see and understand and expand your knowledge of how someone else lives. You cannot be bored because your differences are always a good topic for conversations. While some Jamaicans may feel more at ease with another Jamaican, there’s that saying that familiarity breeds contempt.

Hello to you both. You both had me cracking up. From what I understand about Circumcision, it may have several health benifits. Like lowering the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Culture differnces can be an issue, but I think as long as the couples try to understand each other cultures they will be able adjust. Communication is the key.👌🏼

I am a new subscriber and I like you two and appreciate your discussions. I have a couple of questions. It sounds like you, Katanya, are doing most of the understanding and compromising. Do you feel there is a balance in terms of him compromising and understanding you? Also, do you work outside of the home as well? Is there an appreciation for the imbalance that is inherent in working outside of the home and being responsible for the home as well? Finally, did you two discuss these things before you got married? If so, how did you decide to manage the cultural differences?
@thebonnicks16 күн бұрын
