That is amazing in our extreme Canadian weather that the construction grade plastic is 6 years old. That just proves how you can and should try to utilize this very cheap way of having a greenhouse. Hard work coming up next year on the new and improve greenhouse build but I know that it is going to be exactly what you need. Enjoy

Great job, is beautiful the green house full of plants. In my small greenhouse (3x2x1,5meters) i don't use heaters because they drain too much power, but instead I've made a set of four (220v,50W each) COB led attached to a long heatsink with two cooling fans. This kind of led just need to be plugged in (no electronic drivers required) and they produce a very good amount of light and heat. I keep them on 4h in the early morning and 2h in the evening (14h of continuous light for the trees) and the greenhouse stays very warm even with below 0 outside. (If you DIY this kind of light, you can get these cob leds for very cheap on internet,but be careful to the too cheap one ;) )

Nigel the trees in the greenhouse that are on the floor will you put them on thick insulating foam to protect the roots from the cold coming up from the floor (similar to Jonathans buried trees)? Enjoyed this video looking forward to the new greenhouse being built.

When I finally get the larger greenhouse built, the trees will stay on the benches inside the greenhouse. The greenhouse will be insulated and heated and should be really nice on those cold days!

Hi Nigel. What humidity and temperature do you keep your plant room at during the winter? How do you keep the humidity level at the point that you want it? I have shelving in my basement with LED grow lights, but several of my sub-tropicals (Fukien Tea, Shefflera, etc.) have been shedding leaves as if they are too dry, although they do get watered well. I figure it must be a humidity issue. Also how do you prevent fungal issues in your plant room? Where do you get the green house tape? Thanks, and keep up the good work! Bob
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
Hello Bob, I keep the plant room above 12 C (54 F). The temperature varies depending on the outside temperature and the amount of sunlight that hits the window. On a warm sunny day, it will go up to 36 C (97 F). On a cold dark winter day it goes down to the 12 C (54 F). Because I have a large number of trees in one room and the only air circulation is the fan inside the room, it stays very humid. It can get up to 80 percent on a sunny day, if I mist the trees a lot, and down to about 40 percent on a cool cloudy day. I have a fan that circulates the air in the room running at all times and this helps keep fungus and algae down. I buy the greenhouse tape from Lee Valley tools.... www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/planting/greenhouse/47940-uv-resistant-tape

Nigel, try making a thin paste using a really hot pepper like a Habinero, and paint the trunks of your trees with it. That should keep the mice and rats away once they get a small taste. My son says those peppers are the hottest except for one called the South Caroliina-something-or-other. The Habinero should be easy for you to find in Canada at most any good natural foods stores. You must wear gloves when handling those things to keep from getting it's "essence" on your hands and then into your eyes. I'm not any kind of expert on hot peppers, but I do know that those ones will light you up, so it should do the same for those "marauding" mice / rats. LOLOLOLOL.

Hi Nigel, do you use fans to circulate the air in your plant room? It's my understanding that circulating the air will keep the fungal issues in check.

Yes, I keep a fan circulating air at all times, it really helps keep the room from getting cold spots around the windows. It helps keep insects and fungal issues away also!
