Watching this very late. But, I recently repotted my Portulacaria bonsai, and I love how despite it not being the best time of year to do it when I did, about a week or two after repotting the tree started to really thrive again. Very good plant to look after, they're so responsive to training and make great indoor trees.

@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone Hi Nigel! I found three Osage Orange hedge apples on my way home from work early this morning. I was very surprised because it is quite early in the season for these trees to be fruiting. It is usually late Summer to early Fall here in the plains states. Anyway, I am hoping you would share your process for propagating these trees from seed, and what soil/soils you used. I found one source that says to remove the pulp with the seeds in it, wrap it in wax paper, put it in a plastic bag and into the refrigerator for 4 weeks to allow the seeds to stratify before planting. Thanks Nigel! Lisa
@TheBonsaiZone4 жыл бұрын
Hello Lisa, the seeds were sent to me by Julie, the seeds were separated from the pulp and sent to me dry. I planted them in spring and it took about a month for them to germinate. Almost all came up and are growing well into year 2!! I planted the seeds in bonsai soil and kept them in the greenhouse until they germinated. I think the seeds were kept cool over the winter.
@craft-o-matic23774 жыл бұрын
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks Nigel! You are fortunate because it was a messy and very sticky job peeling the hedge apples. However, the pulp with the seeds in it are in the refrigerator, basically until the pulp rots and the seeds can be separated. I don't know for sure. We'll see! Lisa

I had one of these plants given to me and it was almost dead. Then after saving it, it just didn't do anything until I planted it with more regular soil. It has taken off now and has doubled in size in only a few months.

I know this a little late but why not allow it to root bind and allow them to root fuse? I’d imagine it would make repotting a lot quicker and easier.
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
I may re pot like that some day, but I'm in the process of developing the surface roots and the overall arrangement. I also find that as the trees grow, I may need to space them out more, and they may go in an even larger pot too.

Soil mix…I have been using Chicken Grit with the Pearlite. Seems this stuff is similar sized granite pebbles, easily found at feed stores and is really inexpensive. That mix I do at 50/50. Then I mix it 80/20…the 20 being composts. I don’t know if anyone else has thought of that for the bonsai mix? I suppose the masters want to see Akadama used or such, but it works for me on a budget.

Finding a frog in the water you are using to wash your pot could be a good thing, Frogs are very sensitive to chemincals in the water. if he can live in it, it's not likely the water will hurt your plants.

How are doing your willow bonsai? Didn't see any updates after you showed them attacked by cicadas (at that time I said maybe they are root bound, but for now I think it could be cicacada)
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
Both Willows seemed to be doing better until the hot weather hit, after that they just slowly got weaker over about a month and then died. I'm not sure what killed them, I don't think it was the winter as they were protected in the basement, and they were growing new roots in spring. I really wanted to develop them into nice trees so it is sad to see them go and not knowing what killed them makes it harder. Having both go at once, rules out many factors but it is still a mystery to me.

Any reason why my Portulacaria afra leaves stay very small and don't make branches?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
It may be the size of the root system or the conditions that the plant see's. I'd have to see a picture and you would need to describe the environment and watering it gets.

Come fai a far crescere il muschio?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
