I am a newbie in the gardening game. I bought an aloe vera plant a few days ago, and was browsing KZbin to figure out how to maintain it. After watching videos for a while, your aloe bonsai video popped up, and that was it. I've watched tens of hours of your videos in the last couple of weeks. I've learnt so much about bonsai from you, and I'm so grateful for it. I got my first plant (my aloe) less than a month ago, and I've already started with 5 bonsais (a ficus religiosa, a banyan, a couple of crotons and my aloe). Bonsai is like meditation to me now. I think the Elm wants to have feet like the Acer family 😁 I think the roots will look great when the base fills in . It has that Palmatum/ Trident base . It's great . Best root work on KZbin 🙏🏽

It is rare to see a good root base on an Elm bonsai, I think because they grow so fast and thicken up quickly, there is little time to correct them.

Nigel, I want to compliment you on your music tracks here and on many of your other videos. You have an extraordinary music talent on top of your bonsai one. Have you ever listened to an old time country/western band called Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys? The violins in his group had a special sound all their own known as the Cherokee fiddles that played in harmony. Beautiful sounds that were theirs alone. Those fiddles played in harmony and were often copied but never duplicated. Do a KZbin search for a recording by Tompall and the Glazer Brothers--Faded Love. On that record, the brothers sang in beautiful harmony and began by telling the story of how Bob Wills got his start and how his fiddle players developed that unique sound of harmonizing violins. Great story and great sounds. I bring all of this up because I think you and you son could easily play that sound and if your daughter and wife play, you could put that Texas styled fiddle harmony into a family group sound that would keep y'all booked up with play dates........if you want them. Anyway, that band had a beautiful violin/fiddle sound. Have a great day and a Blessed Day.

Nigel, this Elm has a huge potential as a specimen tree... interesting trunk line (surprising for a volunteer seedling from your garden) and the root flare will pull the trunk to the point where you will not have any reverse taper. Also these low branches will add to the trunk thickness in the areas where you want it. Like the progress on the roots as well.

Thanks Leszek, the tree is a little thick up top too, but I hope to get this sorted out over the next few years also. It will be interesting to see how the tree does in the new pot and soil. The last pot wasn't very good, the roots blocked the drainage holes and it didn't drain very well.the second year. Pouring rain today and very cold, but more re potting to come!

I don't wire my trees into the pot because I've seen too many trees with wire marks across the roots. I leave them in the pot with stones on the surface to hold the tree in place until the tree has grown enough to be solid in the pot. This usually only takes a month. You can wiggle the tree and if it feels firm, you can remove the stones.

Did you try sanitary silicone with fungicide (it says it also kills bacteria) on rotting roots (after cutting off the rotting part), to prevent it from rotting further and heal over ? I have already gotten positive results on branches so far, I tried it on roots too, but have no results yet, but I am pretty sure it will work well, at least the trees are not in a negative way affected. I use transparent fluid sanitary silicone so I can see the progress shine thru. You can remove it really well after it healed. I would appreciate if you could confirm that experiment.

I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. I prefer to use pumice, but it is really expensive. I do sometimes add composted pine bark to the mix, if I have some on hand, usually 10 percent. It is rare that I have any though! I like to use ingredients that I can get locally from the stores in the area, because I'm always running out of soil in spring!

Mr. Saunders, Please forgive my naive question (Im very new) but could you explain why you spend so much time working on the roots that are going to be down below the soil and never seen? Does it have to do with the health of the tree or is it more of an aesthetic issue? Thanks!

The roots are below the soil, but a good root system develops the part of the roots and flare at the base of the tree that you can actually see. Many of the surface roots are developed in the soil and then as the tree gets older and more mature, the tree is slowly raised in the pot to show part of the root system above the ground. You will see this on old mature trees in nature, the surface roots start around the base of the tree and smoothly merge into the trunk. This is the look I am trying to develop.

The best time is in spring, after the buds have swelled, but before the leaves come out. The can be collected in fall, if you protect the tree from the extreme cold in the winter.

Great video and love the flashbacks see the development of the roots (and your hair) very nice. I have some smal conifers (20-30 cm) trees (nursery stock). But every time I repot one it seems to slowly dry out and die on me. At first i did a drastic root pruning on them but later on not so mutch... Elas the same result. Can it be that I shouldn't wash the roots the first time I repot them... Rake the roots but not wash them? Thanks and love your video's Titus

I think you need to place the trees in the shade after re potting, they may be drying out from too much sun. It is best to wait until you see new growth on them, and then slowly return them to full sun. Take about a third of the roots off at a time and the tree should recover fine.

If the tree has a lot of vigor in it and the aftercare is good, most deciduous can survive a drastic prune, but..... It is always best to check the species of the tree and then decide what you think it can handle. It is a fine line between life and death!

Actually it is very light, the pot weighs almost nothing and the soil is very light with the perlite in it. I call the soil my seniors mix! It would be interesting to weight the whole tree and pot.

Sticky substance usually is produced by parasites. Did you check if there are any aphids or mealy bugs? Citruses are affected by every sort of pests. I advise you to do a google search and get familiar with them and the appropriate remedies if you want your tree to thrive. Good luck!👍

Yes, it should be possible and have the tree recover quickly. I would let the tree grow wild for 6 months to a year and then defoliate and prune the tree. The tree should have lots of stored energy to recover and the conditions you have sound ideal!

Why you changed your way of cutting the drainage screen? Earlier you cut it only of the size of the holes, not for all the bottom of the pot.

Yes, I am very worried about it, all the big Elms in our backyard all died suddenly one year. I have had many bonsai trees die from natural causes, in the end, nature takes it's course and there is little you can do about it.

The greenhouse is not heated, so it is usually the same temperature as the outside air. It does provide protection from the wind and the humidity inside is usually higher than outside. The basement stays a few degrees above freezing all through winter, but it warms up towards spring. Usually when I bring the trees up and out to the greenhouse, it cools them off until the spring weather hits.

Hi Nigel! I have a European Elm with the similar problem like your tree. The central root isn't in the center, but on the side. This elm grew between the stones. I made a sketch of how this root looks out imgur.com/a/lihhnlC . It will not be possible to completely remove it, because it's located on the side and there are no other roots in this place closer to the trunk. Therefore, I see two options for correcting this: the first is to split the thick root into two thinner parts and grafting roots closer to the trunk to them. This is a rather complicated procedure, besides, the result will still not be perfect, but there is a second option that makes me doubt: to make a ground layering above this root. It's a bit scary to remove a strip of bark around the trunk, because if ground layering isn't successful, the tree will die. I decided that it was possible to go a safer way (tourniquet method): pull the wire at the base as a tourniquet, so that it crashed into the bark, and cover this place with soil and sphagnum moss. Which of the above methods is safer and more effective in this situation? I’m faced with a choice, to do a lot of graftings around the thick root and then to remove it as much as possible, or to grow the new root system again.

You could try and air layer above the existing root base, but many Elms don't air layer well. They are easy to air layer, but the roots sometimes don't blend in with the existing trunk very well and they tree will always look like an air layer for many many years. It may be a good long term solution. You could grow the tree and let it gain lots of vigor and then saw off the root flush, similar to what I did with this tree. It should grow lots of new roots from where the old root was removed. I would plant the tree a little more deeply in the pot for this. If the top is a well developed tree, it makes the decision a tough one. If the top is nothing special, then you have less to loose. Most Elms do grow roots very well and if it were my tree, I'd saw off the large root flush with the bottom of the root base after growing it wild for a few years to gain strength. There would be no guarantee with the results, but if it works, you'll get a nice root base quickly.

Nice roots on that tree Brian! You get used to very cold temperatures in winter, -24C, so when warmer temperatures come, it feels warm to me!
