Collecting Three Manitoba Maples, The Bonsai Zone, May 2019

I'm collecting three Manitoba Maples (Acer negundo) from my front pre-bonsai garden. These root systems will be a real challenge to develop, if the trees survive!

Walnut trees have a chemical called juglone that's used to protect it from weeds and vines etc. It kills off anything within its radial rootspan!

I was wondering about that. Might significantly reduce the risk of loosing trees as they are dug out and get ahead of the nebari early. On the other hand my climate is very different to Nigels.

One hint when making spring root-pruning, especially with one as drastic as that third tree is to remember that poliethelene is your best friend. keep that pot in a plastic bag with just the top open for a couple of weeks as you would for a giant cutting. It will greatly increase your chances of success.

You've got such a great variety of pre bonsais to choose from. I finally got my first mulberry into some training pots. A raised bed made it increadibly easy, just had to unscrew some board and rake away the soil.

Nigel, always nice to grow your own prebonsai! Just a suggestion, try planting collected trees in individual training pots. Planting them individually makes it easier to manage the watering needs for the each tree and avoids drying out or wet areas in the soil. I always hate when a tree doesn't make it and rethink what would work better in the future. I love your channel and the knowledge you provide for the community in invaluable, you do a great job!

I agree, planting them in the front garden for so many years was not a very good thing to do! I had intentions of digging them up each year and root pruning them, but time always ran out and they were left for another year! 20 years later, many still have not been touched!

Great job! I try always to ground layer the tree that I want collect in future. It's almost impossible to find a decent root plane in nature (unless the tree was growing on a flat stone) so i prefer to restart a new root base every time. When I can't ground layer, I just plant the tree in a very large pot with all his bulky root and made air layer.

So far the trees are doing well, the leaves have come out and we've been having nice rainy weather to help! I will find out later this spring which ones will survive.

I would love to see that Ash in future videos, as I have 2 I collected from my garden. They're chunky and gnarled and look great so far, however theres so little documented about them as bonsai, people assume they're too coarse growing but I disagree. great video as always.

I love your videos they are so relaxing! I started bonsai around november after I went trough a depression last year and needed a hobby to clear my mind. I have a few young trees from the woods around our cabin and got some old christmas trees from family members to practice styling on. I like to do the more 'cruel' styling on trees with wire, raffia and carvings but admire the way you shape your trees with expercience and patience. Sorry, but I actually laughed out loud when I saw the roots of the first maple that you dug up. You might want to remove as many big rocks as possible out of the pre-bonsai bed before planting any additional trees there, as they can play havoc with a root system. ~ This project would make for a unique betting pool.......’which Manitoba Maple will survive?’ ~ I’m wishing them all good luck !

I’ve had good results collecting walnut trees and keeping them in moist but not wet soil out of the light and misting them twice a day to provide moisture. They seem prone to more issues with too much moisture on the soil level at first and even trying to use a humidity tent in my experience has only resulted in mildew. I’ve often thought that my harvested trees weren’t going to make it only to see the buds swelling two days later.

so.. i have been watching for a while now and wondering what kind of soil do you recommend? i started planting bonsai seeds 3 years ago but most of them didn't survive. Still got 6 of many that survived. bigger bonsai tree's seems doing just fine. i am using Bonsai akadama and Bonsai ground.

hi Nigel, you maybe can try to add some root hormone to trigger them to grow more roots for survival. Therefore you can have higher survival rate

Idea: you should make a garden such as your front garden that has a concrete slab underneath. this would allow the wild growing trees grow a radial root base. similar to trees growing on the Canadian shield rock.

hi Nigel great video! that root was windier than a british road haha. Just wondering, you said 2 years before you touch the roots in the video (at least i think thats what you said), is that the case for all dug up trees or just ones with severe lack of roots like these? I dug up a tree last spring which had a great root system and put it in a large pot, do you think it would be okay to do some root pruning this summer or am I being to hasty? Thanks

Hey Nigel. I’ve gotten a few trees and have cut the tap roots and potted them in bonsai soil. It is customary for the trees to look sad/droopy initially after this process? Is it possible to get a montage of a tree from tap root cut to the tree growing healthy in a training pot?

If the tree has a good humid environment, the leaves should remain firm. I would try placing a clear plastic bag with ventilation holes in it around the tree and pot until you see some new growth. If the tree only has a tap root and not many other roots, I would only cut it in about half. Once a more fibrous root system develops, you can remove the rest of the tap root without much worry.

I had the same experience with walnut trees. It seems they can not handle root injury very well...

I was thinking that on the 3rd plant with the Z root, you could have done a sort of air layering, only cutting the cambium layer where you did the big cut, living the big Z root on, and putting the tree back uncut in your yard for a year or two. This way the roots below the cut could have still fed and watered the tree, but it would have a grown all new roots above the cambium layer cut, making the tree survive and creating a nice root plane. Do you think that this could have worked ?

I was literally born into country music.....my Dad played the steel guitar and the base fiddle (some called it the Bull Fiddle) and his younger brother played "lead electric"and fiddle....pretty much anything with strings. They both were self-taught when they were kids after someone gave them an old $3 Sears an Roebuck guitar. They never learned to "read" music. I stupidly never asked my Dad to teach me to play the steel. He "crossed-over" in 2006 after a 20 year battle with Parkinson's Disease and I've missed that opportunity.....among many others. They did, they have being dying back over the years since, I don't think they like being in a pot, I've never had success with Manitoba Maples once they are out of the ground.
