Testing the XP-Pen Deco LW Drawing Tablet

XP-Pen has always been a favored brand of mine. As usual, I really appreciate your honest reviews. People in my art groups are constantly asking about pen and graphic tablets, and I constantly refer them to your videos. Keep up the good work!

I started using my older screen-display as a screenless tablet and noticed that it's alot more comfortable to draw on this way. So I was looking for reviews on YT for pen-tablets and was a bit dissapointed that you didn't have a video on the Deco L/LW, so I bought the LW after a week. Still can't believe that you uploaded this an hour after mine arrived. And after testing it for myself for a few hours I can say that drawing on it feels great and since it's your only negative I have to point out that I actually don't notice as much wobble with the pen as you do. I also tried it on my Tab S6 Lite and it works great. You have to connect it via cable (bluetooth doesn't work even tho you can pair it). Shortcut-buttons also work and are customizable on Artflow and CSP and probably on other apps that support keyboard-shortcut settings in general (not sure on that tho).

does your xp-pen have the issue of creating a line even though the pen nib isnt touching the pentab surface? how about the button on the pen? is it working? i have a xp-pen pentab with those issues and i'm thinking about finding a replacement

@@jang1809 So far everything is working fine. Hard to tell after just a day. But I was using the xp-pen Artist 22e pro before that for about 2 years and had no such problems with both pens they send me. I dunno if you've tried anything to fix it, but if nothing works I think the Deco L/LW could be a nice replacement, especially in that pricerange.

Is there a arrow cursor in your tab s6 lite when you use the xppen? I use huion on my samsung phone and old samsung tablet, there is a noticeable transparent circle cursor but it's so tiny, when i draw i can't see where i click, i test it on my brother's phone (xiaomi phone) and there is black arrow cursor, it's much much better, is there is a settings for this?

@@whwjsjhsj Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you are talking about Clip Studio Paint, there is an option to change your cursor when you go to your preferences -> cursor. From there you can set your prefered cursor for each brush-type.

I got my Deco LW two weeks ago and I'm super happy with it. The silky surface and the way the pen glides over it feels great. And the excellent pressure sensitivity registering even the slightest touch is fantastic. The slight wobble when drawing super slow straight lines isn't an issue for me as I mainly use the tablet for retouching photos. Thanks for the short preview of the tablet.

I recently got a Deco L and im a little confused because the battery of my tablet is low but it won't charge no matter what i hook it up to. I'm not sure if u even have to charge the deco LW but i was wondering if you do, how do u go about it?

@@brianna949 Hi. As far as I know, the Deco L is the non-wireless version. So it works only plugged in. You cannot charge it and use it wirelessly. Only the LW version is wireless with a battery. The Deco L you have to use while it is plugged into the computer.

Hello, I am interested in this model but when I heard in the video about some "wobble" I started to wonder what actually that is... Can please explain to me if you have experienced such wobble in your time of use? Have you actually felt such a thing or just the guy in the video?

I just got mine!! I ordered mine a week or two ago , mostly because they had it in pink and im crazy for anything that matches my setup. I missed clip studio paint though, after 3 years since switching to an ipad and procreate. I have to say this is a really nice tablet, comparing to the wacom intuos i had even longer ago. But compared to the ipad, there are some things i find myself struggling with. I found that my matte screen protector on my ipad is actually more matte than the surface of the xp-pen, and this feel is more smooth than i prefer, but i suppose it can take some time to get used to. And i dont know if its just me, but the pen feels much lighter and shorter than im used to, and i started to cramp in my hands after an hour of drawing, but again it might be something i need to get used to. The actual pen performance is so good though and i really love this tablet. Id say overall the only con i have with this purchase is the FEEL of the pen and surface. Also, it was really funny to see this on my feed today, as a few weeks ago i was goin crazy thinking "How can i buy a new tablet without Brad's review of it first?!" But it turned out alright!

What wacom intuos you use? I'm searching a new pentab that have the same surface as my old intuos cth480, i bought huion but the surface feels so different, how's yours? Do ur xppen have same surface as your wacom intuos?

@@whwjsjhsj The wacom i had was the intuos cth490! Its been a long time since i used it so i cant make the most direct comparison, but in my opinion the wacom had a nicer textured feel while the xp-pen is a smoother texture so far. However, with my wacom i scratched up the surface of the tablet pretty bad with the pen nib which might have caused more texture. I don't think the texture of the xp pen is worse but it does feel smoother than I'm used to.

if it needs the dongle, it's not really bluetooth, that's a radio based connection but bit different.

Indeed! I used to paint on csp on that tab because it was the most optimized but I use Krita 5 now and it runs like a beast!

For people who is wondering, If your device has bluetooth module built-in you don't need that dongle/adaptor, that adaptor is useful for desktop PC without Bluetooth since most laptop/tablet has Bluetooth module built in. That dongle is just a bonus.

The dots on the keys are called "braille", it's a system of reading by touch used by blind. In case that we are focusing on the monitor, we don't have to look at our pads and look for a key.

This Bluetooth issue needs to be addressed. They do have an official logo and are mentioning 5.0 compatibility on spec sheet, but you said it needs dongle. It should be backwards compatible unless it's BT 5.0 only, is this the issue? Thanks for the review

Hi, i have this tablet actually. Im not using the dongle. I just have it connected via the computer's bluetooth and thats it. You have to charge it eventually with the included wire, but as far as i know the included adapters and dongle isnt required to be plugged in

Something that always bothers me with reviews is that i can never tell if people are using stabilizer (something like Lazynezumi) or if the tablets themselves lag. I'm someone who likes to draw without stabilizer and no delay whatsoever so I wish more people would talk about that. Like when he starts drawing here there is an obvious delay, but is it from the tablet or Photoshop? Ughh.

I think any device using Bluetooth instead of direct wired connection (USB) will suffer from more lag due to bluetooth protocol overhead and potential interference from other wireless devices. So, if lag is a concern, try wired connection. Also make sure there aren't other software or updates running in the background that can slow the response time.

From the video, it's obvious that the lag is awful. This guy is putting a really positive spin on it "I have to use it for more hours to get used to it". I have an XP-PEN StarG640, (mini-usb connection) and the lag is about the same and I find it completely unusable for my application (teaching). I used to have a Microsoft Surface 2 and there was no lag; it was instant. Manufacturers really should publish lag time as a basic specification, and any review has got to test the lag as a bare minimum.

I think the wacom experience is the standard that other companies are attempting to reach, but from what I know (I've never had experience with anything other than one xp pen tablet), I think the gap is closing a lot and I don't think having something for the brand name has ever been worth it tbh

That being said, they are pretty good for most kind of digital art, a good artist can do anything on one as long as they have the skill. It's just about the feeling and specs in the end of the day

Wacom is really good in many aspects, but I don't think the cost of products as intuos pro are justified. Recently I bought an intuos pro and it made my work easy, but sometimes the pressure doesn't go well, few instant but it happens, or suddenly it doesn't work and after unplugged it works again, and I have just a few days with this tablet. haha And also there is the problem with the nibs, and I already bought some replacements. So I don't think it worth the price. But also I couldn't find a better option, so... it's a good tablet, the quality in my lines looks amazing, but I hoped for a better experience. 😕

@@pinkstarknight there is also different needs. For example I use my phone for digital art and Wacom doesn't have the best support for it. I was gifted with the cheapest intous and for months I haven't used it because of the small drawing area for the phones.. it's uncomfortable. Recently bought the XP pen Deco mini7 and instantly so much more space. Different feel and quality but much better at comfortability

I'm working in my first picture book and I was working with an intuos drawing tablet, but I thought it was time for an upgrade for my tablet, I thought the intuos pro was the next step, and its pretty good for drawing, except for the things I mentioned in my previous comment. It's great you found an excellent option for you. Probably in my case, I was afraid left my confort zone with wacom. 😅

Ok I have a question: What is the pro here compare to the much cheaper (actually less than half the price in my region) Deco Fun L.. Wireless is a nice gimick but I plan to work on a desktop so not big of a deal to me; buttons.. well I have a keyboard so unless it would have a poti it is not really an asset.. The price does not bother me, but what do I get for an extra 50 bucks here? And I feel the comparison between the wacom pen and this one was to short - is there really a noticeable difference? (I am a bloody beginner, but still do not want to regret anything and get used to bad habits - if this makes sense?).. XP Pen has official Linux support here - big plus, where is your affiliate link? I have a burning question, I got a deco Pro off amazon and tried it, and it felt.... A bit oof Too much friction actually. Might be rare to hear that but I've gotten used to using an s pen with a hard plastic nib on a smooth touchscreen surface. And it feels like the pen squeaks on the surface its like on the edge of squeaking like chalk on a chalkboard Is the deco LW any different? Give or take this model is 2 years newer than the deco Pro and I was pretty nonplussed by the wierd pen problems (I can't seem to single click, no matter how fast I tap the surface of the tablet with the pen I can't open any menus without it closing itself right after)

But if you like to move on the go the deco LW is wireless but there’s only one chord on my drawing tablet and it is amazing. The top two buttons on the pen have a little lag to them but the pen is very good and does not feel cheep!

From what i remember if the pen is close to the surface of the tablet you will see the arrow cursor wherever you hover the pen on the tablet without actually touching it. 3:09 i'm vision impaired, it is real braille in that those are actual braille letters but what they actually say is completely meaningless, it's just "a, i, f, j, i, a". choosing to use random braille letters rather than a more simplistic tactile marking is strange tbh (especially since most sighties i know somehow can't distinguish the letters by touch easily if at all), my guess is the buttons were just the cheapest option wholesale

Yes! At first it feels unnatural, but keep using it! Use it as your only mouse from now on, and also do some drawing exercises everyday for 20 minutes, fill a whole page with small uniform circles, draw squares and fill those with lines that stay inside the square. Practice the amount of pressure you use by alternating between thick and thin lines and circles, stuff like that :) Hope it helps! Just keep going at it and you will get more control!

My addition to other comment is to draw the initial sketch traditionally at first, then try "tracing" it digitally to have some sort of guideline when practicing, and then start drawing from scratch on digital once you feel confident. It takes a while to get used to it, some ppl take 2-3 weeks but I personally took 1 month-ish myself to fully adapt to the hand eye coordination. Just dont rush it and take it slowly, its all worth it in the end!

@@Kogami the main problem is I cannat draw vertical. Horizontal no problem. I can draw line horizontal. But when I want to draw vertical line it is not straight. So I cannot draw anything. I know, draw from shoulder not wrist, but on that pen tablet it is just a mess. My patrner tried too, and same issue. Not the pen tablet issue, because I have 2 different pen tablets, and both I cannat draw vertical lines.
