I mean, anything in that museum is equally priceless, it's just that society says that fancy jewelry must be an extra special kind of priceless because we see it on kings and queens and celebrities. I like his attitude of appreciating the artistry of the pieces and the beauty of the stones, but aside from that it's just minerals with interesting physical properties. I get Emily spazzing out about wearing the necklace, though.

The most entertaining part of this is how they're handling collectively millions of dollars in gems like costume jewelry, and store it in ziplock baggies in a drawer. People always feel like everything in a museum is delicate and fragile, even if it's something as strong as jade or diamond. It's nice to see people get hands-on with these kinds of artifacts.

This was AMAAAZZZZIIIINNGGG! The diamond and garnets in their natural form were really mindblowing, I would never have expected them to form like that. Those garnets were so perfectly formed, why did anyone ever think they should start cutting them up. Jeez, humanity. This is such an awesome video, I never thought we might be able to explore other areas of the museum, it's so exciting!

***** That is the idea, but it is very much debatable wether the so-called "imperfections" of natural gems are necessarily bad. It depends, I suppose. Jewlry is nice, but a gem in a "natural" state has its own wonderful charm.

***** I am well aware, since not only have I seen jewellery before but several pieces were also featured in the video. My point is that we as a society don't value these natural forms, "shaping, shining, and refining" is not necessary to make these gems beautiful, its primary purpose isn't really to make them look nicer, it's so people can wear their wealth. People think gems looks better in their "refined" and cut state because we associate them with wealth and status, they are more beautiful to us in that form because it's what we as a society are used to. It's the accepted form of beauty. Personally, I think these gems look far more beautiful in their natural form and I have absolutely no desire to wear them in a "refined" form. Sure, they look gorgeous in jewellery, I'm not condemning their use in jewellery, but I get more joy from my little chunk of natural amethyst than from my garnet ring. They're beautiful in all forms, but we shouldn't forsake or dismiss the natural form of something so incredible just because it wouldn't look good in a necklace. I wish there were more gem displays in museums (there's none in my local) so we could learn to appreciate not just the natural form of gems, but appreciate where they have come from, and how, and the processes they go through to become a trinket. I think a lot of people take the gems they see in jewellery stores for granted, and they shouldn't, because they are amazing objects created by our earth and we don't stop to think about how crazy it is that they are these naturally occurring deposits that we have decided are beautiful and have given immense value. We should allow ourselves to be awed by the natural creation and formation of gems, and avoid looking at them only to think 'it would be nicer if it was a tenth of the size and surrounded by silver, and on my neck'. Gems are more than just jewellery.

Love this. The Gem Room always fascinated me as a young child & still does. I can see the beauty even though I rarely wear jewelry. BTW, as I remember, they used to have a lot larger section devoted to displaying the gems back in the 50's & even 60's. What I love best about being a Field Museum member is the annual members nights when you can go up in the attic & see things that aren't normally on display & listen to presentations about the work of the staff. This channel is the KZbin version of that! Love it!

The gem room is always my absolute favorite part of the museum. Especially before the revamp...I love the openness of the new room, but the old, quiet, dark one with the bright lights contrasting the dark velvet just seemed to fit much better with the shining stones :)

When I took a week vacation to Chicago, I spent two days at the Field Museum, and the second day was spent almost exclusively in the jade exhibit and the mineral exhibit. It really brought to life what I'd been learning in my geology class to see so many uncut samples. I couldn't have been happier!
