"You're not Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnam, Burma..." I'm mostly certain the film is trying to imply she's an agent of North Korea, but at the time it may have been too controversial or risky to outright say it, hence the 'dancing around her origins.' This would especially make sense in the context of the DMZ conflicts happening around the time of production.

Toho actually had quite the history of Kong ideas: --Kong was originally going to fight a monster named Frankenstein/Prometheus, but it was changed to KKvsG after John Beck and Willis O'Brien pitched the idea to Toho. --Afterwards, Toho WANTED to make a sequel to KKvsG, but for reasons unknown, they never did. --There was going to be a remake of the original too, but was turned down due to Universal telling them no. --The planned remaked was turned into a completely different film with Godzilla fighting Mechani-Kong while a "Fantastic Voyage" subplot was going on, but was turned down out of paranoia. And to top it all off, THIS movie was ironically made partially out of spite because Kong was originally going to appear in the Sea Monster as the star monster, but was turned down after Toho and Rankin-Bass got into an argument.
@ConstantineFurman8 жыл бұрын
Said argument was over who was actually going to make the film. Rankin Bass demanded it be directed by Ishiro Honda and the effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Toho said "No, it'll be directed by Jun Fukuda and effects by Sadamasa Arikawa." So R/B pulled out. Ironically enough, Tsuburaya did wind up directing the effects (at least partially) for the resultant "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster."
@DevilFish698 жыл бұрын
Just a few tidbits here. -O'Brien wanted to make King Kong vs Frankenstein but John Beck stole the story from him and sold it to Toho behind his back. They wanted to have Kong fight their own monster instead and Beck agreed. O'Brien was left out in the lurch and was ripped off by Beck. -Toho didn't do the King Kong vs Godzilla sequel because the rights they negotiated with RKO was just for the one film. They had to renegotiate the rights for the second film and they felt they overpaid for the first film (They ended up paying $200,000). -King Kong vs Ebirah wan never made because Rankin Bass felt it didn't reflect their cartoon series enough. It had nothing to do with no Honda. That's a popular misconception. Toho was always eager to get money from American investors (like Henry Saperstein). There is no way they would have said "No" to American investors. -Kong was supposed to be in Destroy All Monsters but the license they got in 1967 was set to expire. So to avoid any legal mess they dropped him. Interesting note this King Kong suit was used in an episode of Go! Greenman in 1973. The character was renamed "Gorilla".

"VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OFTHE SEA"... U.N. reseach submarine whose commander is named "Nelson". In the 1961 feature film, early on, they race to the U.N., just as they did in here! Brandon reminds me of Cinema Snob except entertaining and not making me fall asleep. I'm not even trolling, Snobs reviews bore me so hard that I fall asleep, and I mean every time.

Isn't that commander Rhodes Reason? Same year he played a gladiator in Star Trek, I believe.

This is an awesome King Kong movie. Susan is probably the hottest chick in a Kong movie. Awesome soundtrack in this movie. A robot Kong It was great being a kid watching this on tv

They used to replay this heavily on a local channel in the 70s, when I was around 10 years old. One of the greatest disappointments of my young life was that we never got to see Mecha-zilla and Mechani-Kong together.

Hell yes, Frankenstein Conquers! Unlike King Kong vs Godzilla, FCTW did in fact have two endings, and like A*P*E, it features a toy farm animal! Plus there's the whole insane mad-scientist-primary-color-test-tubes-monster-heart-submarine-bombing-Hiroshima-transplant-operation-nuclear-bombing-victim-cannibalism set-up to make the most jaded head spin.

Self Elevation Gargantuas (war of) the American version cutting all the hints and dialog to Frankenstein was AWSEOME....don't get me wrong Frankenstein's Monster (Karloff /Strange) is my ALL TIME FAVORITE Monster. .but putting him against Japanese giant monsters. .noooooooooo...now Godzilla vs The Wolfman (no man just giant Wolf Monster ) was on the right track!!!!

It gets more complicated when Godzilla himself is inspired by King Kong. AND Mechagodzilla is based on Mechanikong! BEST Dr Who Ever Last year at G-Fest in Rosemont Illinois, they had a reunion of Akira Takarada and Linda Miller.
@Tareltonlives8 жыл бұрын
The movie is good until the overlong defeat of Dr Who. Just have Mia Hama kill him or have them kill each other while Kong saves the girl.
@josephrouleau92596 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Madame Piranha (Mie Hama's character) is supposed to be North Korean, but the filmmakers were evidently afraid to name-drop the country directly.

I like to think that Kong (2017) is related to King Kong Escapes than the original King Kong.

Recommendation for a Future Review -- a live-action/animated fusion... It's NOT literally a Roger Rabbit/live-action fusion BUT a live-action stylized to RESEMBLE animation. It actually takes advantage of the LIMITATIONS of budget and technology to create something more visually unique... There's a Cutie Honey (2004) live-action film based on the manga and old 1970s anime TV series (which I'm currently watching; I'm loving my current trip down retro-anime lane). Parts of the live-action film remind me of that "Ghastly Johnny" review Brandon did a wild back. Yes, it had weird singing numbers and some very strange scenes as if the main character wasn't weird enough! Cutie Honey (2004) is a trippy film. Directed by the same guy (Hideaki Anno) who created the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime TV series. He directed the most recent Godzilla film released in Japan as well. Well-worth promoting to people. They'll get it or they won't... They'll like it or hate it. I LOVE Honey so I know which side I'm on... :) They recently did another Cutey Honey (different spelling, same character) movie (2016) in Japan but I've heard next to nothing about it (which usually is NOT a good sign for anime-derived projects)... It's the third live-action project for the character after the 2004 movie and 2007 TV series which was patterned more after the 1997-1998 anime TV series (which itself was a bit more like Sailor Moon since it was worked on by the staff who made the original 5-season Sailor Moon TV series).
