As someone who recently got a PhD... Yeah, they're a load of crap more often than not. It's not about being knowledgeable or intelligent or analytical so much as it is showing off that you can stick with a single project longer than two years and then tell your committee what they want to hear. Which goes a long way towards explaining why the doctor just kinda...let's the murderer go.

This movie could have been so much better if Miguel was depicted as being legitimately sane after those five years (they could have changed the opening scene somehow to depict him having an isolated psychotic episode). More emphasis on the gaslighting/blaming of Miguel could have been really effective, especially considering how much he loves his sister.

The movie was a West German co-production. Even though Franco was Spanish, he had difficulty working in his homeland for many years, because he kept running afoul of local censors and the Francoist government. He was enough of a pariah that they put him on a blacklist alongside Luis Buñuel for a while.

I've seen A LOT of Franco's filmgraphy, and I too don't get why he disowned this one specifically, I mean this is cliched and cheesy, but not much more than a lot of his work and this is a lot less weird and sleezy than a lot of his other stuff which is pretty much porn under cover of genre films or genre/porn disguised as art house. Did he disown any other one of his besides this one?

I know I'm a little late, but I just discovered upon your series a short while ago. And thanks for pointing out the Blue Monkey movie. I saw it a long time ago and never seemed to be able to find it on IMDB. BTW, "Die Säge des Todes" means "The Saw of Death" (don't know if that was already mentioned in the comments). Apparently the DVD was intended for the German market and also contained the English audio track.

Came here after learning about “Steamboat Willie” Mickey Mouse becoming public domain, and the resulting new slasher movie to come this year, “Mickey’s Mouse Trap”, which seems to be a combination of FNAF, Scream, and a little bit of this movie, in that the killer is dressed up as Mickey Mouse. Uncle Jess was ahead of his time. 😄

Actually, Franco's most popular films are probably The Awful Doctor Orloff (1962) and Count Dracula (1970). His best movies (a very relative term) are probably Venus in Furs and Diabolical Dr. Z, although my favorite of his films (an even more relative term) is Attack of the Robots. I'm not a big fan of sleaze or perversion, so needless to say, I'm not a big fan of Franco.
