I think this kind of an explanation is not only over-due, but unfortunately way too late for a lot of people. If more people had this kind of information, they'd know how to play into the system better. There should be a mandatory 5 point deduction for not uploading their music on time. Sorry, I run sound at CalStates and BAC, and I just wish they'd all get their music in before the deadline. I will say they are getting better at doing so. The new system that the NYYC is doing works really good and saves me a LOT of time.

Brandon, could you review the Purple Line? By Magic Yoyo. I heard it's a premium yoyo and slightly better than the N12, but I also heard that the Purple Line is kind if messed up and doesn't sleep longer than 45 seconds. But a comment from someone else will do.

Also score normalization, highest score is normalized to 60 (highest possible score) and everyone else is a percentage based on that.. like being graded on a curve.

Silly newbie question perhaps but is the tech score then divided by whatever number would make the result 60% of your total score? So theoretically you could have the most insane tech anyone's ever seen but have the score reduced to 6 because you only got ones on the eval?

Bjurman something he didn’t go into, is the fact that at each contest the best tech scored player automatically gets 60, and everybody else’s text score gets compared against that. So comparing tech scores between contests doesn’t really mean anything. You should check out Gentry Stein’s series on competition that’s over on YoYoTricks.com. Brandon‘s video was really good, but Gentry does it over several videos, so he gets a little more in depth with how the whole thing works.

I've been wondering about the scoring system for a while lol Thanks for this great explanation. But, I remember watching Ben Conde's freestyle at World's in 2011 where he had an amazing freestyle but dropped a couple. Was he DQ'd? Or were the rules different for major deductions at the time?

You're really at the mercy of whomever are the judges that day. IF they score everyone equally I guess it would balance out, but depending what kind of thrower you were one type of judge would be better then another I reckon. (Unless I find a youthinizer machine, no worries about competition for me.)

Donald Pettit this happens in any other art. For example, in Spoken Word contests, the first contestant always gets very few applause and the crowd and judges aren't yet caught by the atmosphere of the event. Arts are subjective and even if yoyo can be taken as a sport, it's really difficult to be objective.

this sounds a lot like the figure skating scoring system. My issue with systems like it is they reward technical elements more than the emotional part. With yoyoing it's very apparent this. I do this it does better than most though. I would love to see a system with around 60-65% "evals" and 35-40% tech. Just my preference.

I could be wrong, but I believe it used to be 70-30, then 50-50, and then changed again for the last time to 60-40 which seems to be the sweet spot. I mean, as much as I like gimmicks in the freestyle, sure it's cool dancing here and there, ultimately I want to see innovation in the actual yoyo tricks, and for that you need to reward the technical aspect more.

I hear you, I've been on a binge of all of his performances and some of the people I think are contenders in Worlds. I'm so interested to see how this new rumored trick innovation element will play into players performances. All I can think of is how many Japanese players will suffer under it due to the fact that I just see a lot of performances based around clickfarming. I'd really be excited to see what a world winning Evan Nagao or Paul Kerbul routine would look like!
