Improve your binds by mastering bind theory. YoYoTricks.com
While we don't teach any binds in this video, this video will help you improve all your binds and will help you learn new binds with ease.
Get the Civility Yoyo used in this video: yoyotricks.com/yoyo-store/yoy...
Binds do not work by throwing the string into the gap. Instead, a true 1a bind works by threading the string through the gap of the yoyo to rotate the outer-race of the bearing in the same direction the yoyo is spinning, in order to pull the string attached to the bearing around the bearing enough times to engage the response system and wind up.
Special thanks to Gabriel Lozano and Johnnie DelValle for archival video.

I've always wondered how binds work!! But do you happen to know how Responsive Yoyos use slack to come up?
@yotricks
@yotricks 8 жыл бұрын
+WhiteViper On a responsive yoyo two things are happening. One, the string touches the response system when you pull on the string, because the string flexes inside the yoyo and touches it. Second, the bearings on most responsive yoyos do not spin as freely as unresponsive bearings, so the outer race of the bearing will also spin the same direction of the yoyo when it is not weighed down (i.e. when you pull it up) so the outer race also pulls the string around, and when enough string is touching the response system it finishes winding up.

Great video! First time I see such a deep discussion about binding, something we do without thinking after a while. As for the "throwing the string into the gap" part, I think this is still relevant as a tip to learn the binding movement when you're a newbie. It's basically an exagerated movement that teaches newer player how to bind by having them feel the friction point between the string and the response pads. As they get better, players refine their movements and don't need to throw their string anymore to hit that friction point, which leads to better binds.
@yotricks
@yotricks 8 жыл бұрын
+supersmashsam Thanks. On the "throwing the string into the gap" idea, however, it would not be too great an exaggeration to say that we made this video to put that idea completely to rest. In our view it is not good for beginners or experienced players to throw the string into the gap. The main reason being, for the basic binds it is always better to throw the string on the opposite side of the yoyo to avoid a snag. Since it is the act of changing the level of your hands, and not the throwing of the tail, that allows you to feel the friction point between the string and the response pads, it seems to me that it is not helpful in any sense to throw the string into the gap. It sounds like you have taught a few people to bind yourself, which is cool. If you get a chance, try teaching a player or two to bind without throwing the string into the gap and see if it is any easier or not for them to get the general idea. I would love to hear how it goes.
@supersmashsam
@supersmashsam 8 жыл бұрын
+yotricks I have to admit that one of the problems that beginners encounter when learning to bind is that they focus too much on that "throwing" word and drop the string too fast instead of waiting and feeling the friction. So it's probably a good idea to ditch the term "throw" and focus more on changing the level of their hands. When you start learing to bind however, you don't necessarily have a very good and fast throw yet, so there is often a need to exagerate the movement by using an extra long tail, or by crossing the strings over the gap, which leads to tail wrapping and snagging. But I think that's part of the learning process. As you progess however, it is very important to correct this, especially if you want to learn advanced binds such as those that use whips and for regens. This last point was shown excellently in your video. Thanks for the response!
@JimFarrand
@JimFarrand 2 жыл бұрын
It's crazy how much understanding of this has changed. There was a time when people described backspin binds as "fake binds" - real binds were frontspin binds where you deliberately threw enough string into the gap to jam up the yoyo 😂 You can also see plenty of Andre Boulay tutorial videos where he binds in what we now consider the wrong way, and then has to throw a few times to clear the snag. (Though of course, he manages to do it with an abundance of style nonetheless) I used to habitually bind the wrong way on a side throw because no-one taught me there was any difference, and trapezes are slightly easier than undermounts. Life became so much easier after I saw this video and retrained myself. 😊

Thanks. I used to yo yo circa 1970. Then reintroduced early to mid 90's when kids were using clutch style, so I bought a few. I haven't kept up with trends and didn't know about ball bearing yoyos. Makes sense, what with fidget spinners that probably came after ball bearing yoyis caught on. Interesting that fidget spinners combine the ball weightedness of clutches with ball bearing use. It's like a hybrid. Wonder if fidget spinner inventor was a yoyo enthusiast? Now, time to kitbash a fidget spinner and upgrade an old cheap yoyo!

My friends have always been so curious why I throw Front style and bind front style all the time compared to back style throwing and binds. I told them well because there are a small amount of tricks that require a back style throw compared to the front style throwlike Skin the Gerbil and Grandma Kim it Sandwich. They still don't understand why though I do it though.

Hello, i have a question. my yoyo is just a crappy one bought from a crappy store. my yoyo does not have a bearing like that. its just a plastic thing that just holds the yoyo togheter and doesnt spin. does that affect it in any way?

That yoyo will not be good for learning tricks, because it won't spin very long. We recommend you consider getting a ball bearing yoyo, like the Sage, if you are interested in learning tricks. yoyotricks.com/shop/yoyo-store/yoyo-brands/yotricks/the-sage-yoyo-starter-pack/

ok this is a bit Alton Brown and a touch Hipseterish, but Otherwise, This is Brilliant! No one has ever shown this much detail and production value in a yoyo vid OR explained Binds so succinctly. Good SHOW Sir. Good Show.

Informative, although binding in a frontspin mount can be desirable if you want the yoyo to snag so as to create a temporarily responsive yoyo enabling you to be able to loop or shoot the moon to add style to you regens. Additionally, getting some tail snag in the yoyo is a sure way to get a consistent bind. While you may have to recover by doing a couple of gravity pulls and binds, a consistent bind may be considered more important than a clean bind as in competition or some other circumstance where you need a bind. Sometimes the correct way isn't the best way :) Great video, though!

+Owen Ekblad Certainly you are correct about this use of frontspin binds, we even show this in our video. However, I ardently disagree with you about tail snag being a good way to get more consistent binds. The pinching method we show in this video is more consistent than throwing the tail into the gap (which gives you the tail snag you describe) and can be done cleanly 100% of the time in mount based binds, and most of the time in lacerations as well. Whether you are in a contest or performing tricks for something like a talent show it is always superior to have consistent clean binds to running the risk of having tail snags which may need to be cleared with a gravity pull or two, especially when such snags are completely unnecessary. I suggest that perhaps you have not mastered the basic techniques of binds yet if you are relying on tail snags to hit your binds consistently.
