Dead Space Remake Misguided Criticism

To anyone who doesn't understand the design choices surrounding Nicole, I'd like to provide some insight. The original voice and likeness of Nicole were modeled after Iyari Limon. For the remake, Nicole's voice and likeness are modeled after Tanya Clarke who portrayed her in Dead Space 2. Any changes to the character were centered around the actor, not any modern trends or agendas. And to those criticizing Nicole's supposed age, please keep two things in mind. 1.) As stated by Runner, Nicole's age is never clearly stated in any source material, making it ambiguous, and 2.) The actor for Nicole in the remake is actually older than Isaac's actor, Gunner Wright, by a year and some change. Since the character is modeled after the actor, it only makes sense that Tanya's age would reflect in the facial scanning process. For anyone who's skeptical, go check the Dead Space Wiki.

Good explanation. Still does not change that the new character designs looks like shit. Nicole turning into Isaac's grandma and Isaac looking like he lost 20 years from the Original design. If he had that bit of facial hair from DS2 he might have looked better, but as is he looks terrible. Also, since these characters already had faces the VA's should become the character not the Characters becoming the VA's. It just feels like a lazy decision to not model a good and faithful characterization of the cast.

I can understand the criticism, though. I imagine the change is very jarring for a lot of OG fans. I've just been seeing quite a bit of unfounded outrage circulating around and wanted to give my take.

We understand the changes, however, men (as in the vast majority of men) are visual creatures drawn in by beauty and they are also by far the largest percentage of gamers, so its somewhat puzzling a developer would make such a call knowing it's going to annoy a least a part of it's core audience... but not surprising in todays "climate". If we use Mass Effect Andromeda as another example your entire comment falls flat on it's face. The main female character was beautiful in real life, pretty in beta footage and uglified upon release. Stop ruining games with "The Message".... we are paying the devs to make us feel good, not to cater for their inner demons.

@@nemz7505 I can understand where your coming from with a franchise like Mass Effect. Those games are RPGs that let you tailor your characters looks and personality to your liking. Heck, some people play those games as dating sims in space, so having attractive characters makes perfect sense. I feel like that argument, while not unvalid, holds less credence with Dead Space, however. The point of the game is to make the player feel tense and uneasy. Maybe I'm just shortsighted, but nothing about this decision seems motivated by "The Message" to me.

The only problem with the character models I have is that Hammond seems way to young. I always saw him as an older grunt just doing his job. And I’m this he’s baby faced, and just seems like he’s a little more new and doing things to by the book.

That’s literally the only issue I have as well. His de-aging changes an aspect of is character that I thought worked well for him in DS1. My hope with him looking younger is that we see him express his inexperience and youth through his dialogue a bit more and we just see him interacting in a way with the other characters that reflects the clear age change. Otherwise, I think the new Hammond does a spectacular job as far as his performance thus far and looks good. Just hope they incorporate him looking younger into his character since it is a significant enough change I feel compared to his DS1 counterpart.

But the funny thing is, it seems the devs had issues establishing her appearance from the get-go of the franchise. Her looks differ in almost every Dead Space title she appears in. Compare DS1 and DS2 Nicole, for example. Her remake version is basically an HD remix of DS2 Nicole ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think my only complaint regarding looks would be that the new face render for Isaac Clark doesn't look much like he did in previous games. Not his age, but his general face shape and other details. His face is less rounded in the cheeks, his hair is almost ginger instead of dark auburn bordering on on black and he's more clean shaven. Isaac was always depicted with at least some 2-3 day stubble.

My only concerns are on Isaac's animations when he walks/runs, and flies in zero G. They are bad, they look like placeholder animations. I know it's not the final build we've seen, but since the beginning, almost no progress has been made on the animations, unlike the rest. I hope that day one we will have polished animations

I’m replaying the dead space series and now I prefer the remakes face over the original Isaacs face and now that I’m nearly done with dark souls I keep imagining the new Isaacs face on old Isaac. I think it's better that Isaac talks. I know the whole point of the original was that it was meant to feel like the player was Issac. but I think that doesn't work since the game still tried to dive into conflicts that involved his character specifically like going in the first place to visit Nicole or the visions of her in the game. The reason Gordon Freeman works as silent protagonist in half life 1 (haven't played 2 yet so don't know if this is changed) worked is because he was placed in a scenario that didn't rely on his character traits and anyone could be in it. The Reason The Doom Slayer works as a silent protagonist is because his silence is a clear part of his character (as a take orders from no one and just gets things done kind of badass). I think in the motives and story beats dead space has, It makes sense for Isaac to have a voice.

Let me break it down for you Mr L...Dead Space has SIX games: Extraction, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Severed, Dead Space 3, Awakened. So Far as we know they have no plan to remake the expansions like extraction or severed and probably not DS 2 either. So Isaac is going to look like his old self with the grey hair in game and this new brown haired guy in DS 1...that makes no sense AT ALL. Extraction was the first time Nicole appeared chronologically...and she doesn't look anything like that message we saw...so...yeah...it makes no sense. They haven't continuation or timing in this AT all...they just want to make it look nice like some Halo game...so basically they've come out looking like ignorant morons who don;t understand the franchise.

The male characters are ridiculously groomed in Horizon but the women all look plain lol. Women can look great without makeup but they clearly altered the models faces in Horizon for example the face model for Aloy looks nothing like Nikocado Avocado but in game Aloy shows some resemblance just like they did with Dina from the Last of us part 2 as they gave her a stereotypical kosher nose but removed her chin.

Especially considering that person is a teenager and their physical appearance is changing rapidly. The main character doesn't have to be someone that you automatically would have sex with. Dina was based on a real person and unless you go off the shots with makeup and professional photographer, they look really close. But none of what you brought up was actually the point I was making. At the reunited at the tram station they are a lot more calm about the dead crew attacking them while Kendra was freaking out in the original. Like I said though nitpicks I generally prefer that Issac is a lot more proactive and involved.

Modern Gamers hate on everything and have a badge of bad takes, SPECIALLY when it comes to horror games. I swear, back on quarantine people made it sound like ReMake 3 was the worst thing ever, like it was worse than Re6. Callisto ended up being descent yet gamers were expecting the next banger, like a DEAD SPACE 4 that was like 2 or above on quality. Callisto a small pass for being the first on a new IP. Which leads me to the biggest tragedy. DAYS GONE was one of the most fun I had playing an “apocalyptic” game for the longest time! I have so many great memories of fighting hordes, exploring a big open world with multiple hours of fun. That game is great… yet duo to Game Journos and their sheep that game isn’t seen on a good light. Hearing Sony cancel plans for a Days Gone 2 was a big gut punch and an Eye Opener on why companies and their devs shouldn’t obsess over hitting “quotas”. I liked games like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War Ragnarok cause of their gameplay, not because they were GOTY worthy.

@Tormentor bet a noob like you ran away when Nemi killed Brad on the RPD. Tank controls aren’t half as hard to master as unskilled players claim. Anyway although the weird nostaligia-brain-rot community say that RE3 was the greatest it couldn’t be further from the Truth. Of the original trilogy Re2 was the greatest duo to the story and the great map they created, not to mention an actually great A and B scenario that made the game worth playing 4 times. Re3 played it super save with the repeat setting and VERY WEAK plot, remake 3 did great by adding the stakes of delivering a cure. In Re3 OG that subplot never happened and the only acknowledgement of it was Wesker kidnapping Jill in order to gain access to the cure in Re5. And even when it comes to tank control gameplay. Re CVX was the true “challenge” and mastery of the old Re gameplay. Those 1 hit kill Hunters were way more scary than tanking 100 hits from Nemi cause Jill is made out of iron. Not to mention the whole Chris/Claire switching made the game extra scary and hard in a blind playtrough. Obviously this tension factor is lowered on repeat playtroughs but that’s every RE game in a nutshell.

In general the main cast here is a BIG miss. Everyone feel generic and are too young/old for their roles. That said, the game seems really good on the sound part but the immersion on some other parts seems to lack (holywood boring cutscenes instead of keep playing and having the events in front of you during gameplay). Still hoping it's an amazing remake and it kickstart the one of the 2nd opus (wich is my favorite).

I replayed DS1 in December last year. And yeah, Nichole in game model is a little rough in some angle. I think she looks fine in the remake, albeit a little older. Her design feels closer to DS2. From IGN gameplay I see so far. I don't see anything that screams woke yet. Kendra mentioning her "girlfriend" was a non-issue. And she might just made it all up to relate to Issac, as we know how not so trust worthy she is in the first game.

The only gripe I have about Kendra is the change in the VA. Dead Space bases character models off their VA with the new Kendra being portrayed by Brigitte Kali Canales. Kendra Daniels was originally portrayed by Native American actress, Tonantzin Carmelo. I'm Native American myself (Pueblo Laguna and Hopi tribes) and it can be hard to find good examples of Native American representation in media where we aren't a wise shaman/elder, a sidekick, or someone who sacrifices themselves for the protagonist(s). Since Kendra would have originally been portrayed by a Native American, this would have made her Native as well. With the new actress playing Kendra, this means Native peoples lost some representation in the media which is a shame to say the least. Sure there was Samuel Irons in Dead Space: Downfall but he fell under the typical use of natives where he sacrifices himself for the protagonists (but lets be real, his overall odds of survival was basically 0%).

I am not particularly concerned with all the arguments about the facial animations or character designs of characters like Nicole - the atmosphere of creeping dread permeating the Ishimura that is so integral to Dead Space seems to have been retained and even magnified by the more modern technology being employed. Definitely in agreement with a lot of things mentioned here. On the topic of Nicole's looks, medical professions are always older than they appear at times. High stress environments can do that. For instance, there's a post online about a Soviet (last I remember) soldier who looked like he aged 20 years from the start of WWII to the end of it. As the ship's Senior Medical Officer, the health and well being of EVERY crew member of the Ishimura is in her duty. As for further discussion on how the characters appear, many games these days use mocap of the voice actors themselves. So the in game models of the characters are mostly based around the personal physiques and looks of those portraying them, alterations saved for slimming a character down or if they play a non-human character. A big example of this is The Callisto Protocol, where every major character looked like they were on screen in live action shooting. All in all, the remake's character design and portrayals feels much more exactly like if you were filming in live action, blurring the line between animation and film.

One of the changes I don't like is Nicole's video itself. In the original, the video cuts out or glitches before it can get to the end, with Kendra remarking that Issac has watched it a lot. However, in the remake, he's watching it the same and gets jumped by Kendra touching his shoulder, causing him to shut the video off before he see's Nicole's suicide. Again, Kendra asks how many times he'd watched the video. Does this mean the video isn't corrupted or glitchy in the remake and he's seen it all the way to the end? If so, that would mean Issac knows Nicole is dead, ruining that twist. Yes, I know WE know the twist already, but the characters don't.

Some folks, me included sometimes bark at the wrong tree. The whole Kendra deal caught me off guard, because In my eyes she was plain looking back in 2008 and is still looking like that now. "The regular humie look" helps in my opinion to ground this characters in universe, that's supposed to be rather grim. It would be weird to see super models and porn stars going around doing mundane tasks, filling cabinets and police CEC's mining colonies Speaking of that, now that I think about it "all white" in game adds never crossed my mind as something wrong. This whole thing about Kendra and Nicole not being “hot” is honestly ridiculous because this is ‘Dead Space’ not the ‘Dead or Alive’ series or ‘Mortal Kombat’ or a type of game where the appearances and sexuality of the female characters is a major design for them. That is no problem for me I like games like that, but again this is ‘Dead Space’ we play this game for the horror, to be scared and to dismember necromorphs, not for the women, let alone any man skin. @@TheBritishRunner Thats the issue, Isaac from Dead Space 1 was modeled off of Max Shippee's likeness. In 2-3 it was a mix of the two's likeness. They made the choice to carry over elements of Max Shippee's likeness into 2-3 as to not create a hard rift between games. This is the case for all characters, coherence is important. Tbh they also failed on the necromorphs redesign as well. Their non hand drawn approach to the new textures makes them look way lower quality, when compared to the originals. Poly count and 4k textures doesn't equal high quality. The lighting is hit or miss as well. Some areas are great and others are pretty bad in a 1 to 1 comparison. Overall the remake is good, just not great. Id recommend getting it on sale.

No, they ruined it. Issac isn't supposed to say anything. He is in shock half of the time, and the replacement dialog is completely broken, even if it is an actor placement upgrade. With a bit of 3rd-PArty API and basic knowledge the game can look nearly as good as the new version. Only thing wrong with DEADSPACE is there isn't enough cutter PLASMA dropped by the NPC on IMPOSSIBLE difficulty. Which could be easily remedied by giving the player increased drop loot. Necromorph look better how they were, every thing is errie decrepit and unforgiving. Weaponry looked and felt better. This is a huge downgrade, and although we could slightly appreciate the technical achievement it is, there is literally no reason to do anything but go replay the first one

I don't know why the more shallow critics are freaking out about the female characters. We played Dead Space because we wanted to be afraid, and then counter that chemical rush by destroying the dead-ish mutants sprinting, crawling, or venting their way towards us. So what if everyone in the main cast aren't in their twenties, fresh out of college? They're supposed to be experts in their field so they can traverse space safely. That takes many years. Being older doesn't make one ugly, anyway. I'd like to point out that Hammond isn't such an aggressive know-it-all in the remake's opening, talking over Kendra like he did in the original game. this is literally the worst analogy i have ever seen. First of all its NOT about the girl’s shape or skin youth, it’s about UNNECESSARY change to fit this standard of “wokeism” that we have seen TIME and time again like in tomb raider for example, it just completely breaks the immersion regardless of the things you mentioned like lack of sun lack of sleep it doesn’t matter, it’s not being faithful to the original. @@Gold26502 Yeah well, that's where you are wrong, I was critical of the youtubers and the community. So people who make jokes are two faced? I didn't come down to this conclusion straight away but overtime as these videos were uploaded a little while ago mine came out a week ago so I had put a lot of thought into it, unlike others who don't understand the difference between remaster and remake. Remakes only need to be faithful to the story, location and setting not the background elements like dialogue. As for the change to the shapes of the characters I'd argue that they are trying to make them more realistic but I guess that's not what people have in mind when they say they want more realistic games. It doesn't take that much of analysis to tell something is off, if this was to be just a quick remastering of the original experience then yeah you might have a point but this is a remake not a remaster. As for gender swapping or race swapping I would understand if the main characters had that treatment but from what I've seen it's one minor character who dies in chapter one and others in background wallpaper aka posters. I wouldn't really consider that to be woke, imagine being upset at developers for changing the bust of a female character and claiming that to be real criticism.

I agree that some of the criticism for the remake is extremely overblown and ridiculous. It really is completely absurd how upset people are about the physical changes to Isaac, Nicole, Kendra, and Hammond. I've been a hardcore Dead Space fanatic since the original first released in 2008, and I wasn't surprised at all to see that they used new faces for the character models. I never expected the characters to look exactly the same. It's all just personal preference, of course. But these gripes from overly-critical fans seem really weird to me personally. And these people are only lending validity and truth to the stereotypical representation of gamers as neurotic, perpetually-negative crybabies that are desperate to complain about something.

TBH - I think to say that the developers took into consideration the aspects of deep space deprivation into making the character model for Nicole might be a stretch - then again who knows. I honestly don’t think she’s “unattractive” in her presentation - just different as her model was different in DS2 from the first game - actually now more lifelike. The reason for " Backlash" against the appearance of the female characters is quite simple really. We know for a fact that video game developers in the west have purposely made their characters less physically attractive due to complaints and pressure by progressive activists and journalists for political reasons and this pressure doesn't only affect the gaming industry. This pressure doesn't only affect character appearance, it affects story, themes, localisation etc. Point being, if ones doesn't like this sort of thing, one must vehemently reject it no matter its form or severity. I'm excited for this remake, but I actually do agree with the criticism regarding Nicole and Isaac's character models. Her character looks nothing like the original in the slightest, I don't care much about how they look. Just that it's such a departure from the original designs. But I disagree with the idea that this isn't the final product. This is an EA game. They're practically finished a year in advance, and still release with all the bugs they usually do these days. This game will likely be almost unplayable for the first two or three weeks on release.

I have honestly been one of the biggest detractors regarding this iteration of Dead Space, but almost entirely because of the politics behind it. As far as the actual gameplay, story, visuals, etc., I haven't seen anything in particular that would make me question the game's quality or the intentions of Motive Studios, or at the very least nothing major. There are a few minor red flags to be sure, but I am approaching this one as open minded as possible. I actually thought Nicole looking a bit older was kind of a neat detail. In the original game, Isaac looked to be at least in his early 40s, with Nicole in the OG looking much younger than him and sounding much younger then he would in the subsequent games. I don't know, it's actually cool to see a slightly older couple than what we would expect at the center of the story and it's not made a big deal of the way it would in say a large Hollywood production. I suppose when the game is so similar to the original, anything that seems different at all is going to become an easy target. This isn't a Silent Hill 2 remake situation, where the developers chosen to helm the project have proven to be incompetent. I don't think we have any particular reason to go in with any baggage for this one. I look forward to discussing this one for sure. Great job on this one! A nice measured response to an unreasonable wave of criticism.

Mate, we're just really tired of this modern "Frosk narrative" and the bullshit about objectifying women. We're sick of female characters being rewritten as tomboys or wrinkled ladies in their 60s because the loud Twitter crowds feel women should be ashamed of femininity. That's what this is all about, it's been a trend for nearly a decade now. We compare the original to the remake, and it's clear EA have managed to destroy any feminine appeal of Kendra and Nicole. While nowhere is Nicole's age stated, we have a model from DS2 to go by and can easily assume she's around 40. Hell, I've seen real-life 50s looking less unkempt. Case in point, compare the actress that lent her face in the remake, they aged her by 15 to 20 years. Last time I read about it, being in deep space didn't cause progeria. Nor is there any proof of Nicole having suffered severe effects of marker exposure, since you like bringing lack of evidence up. Not once in my playthrough did I get a "boner" - or whatever the hell you brand it - from looking at the females. But something that had been established should not have been tampered with just cause reasons. It all feels off and misplaced. Also, the sound design of the remake, at least what I've heard so far, is a tragic downgrade. Same goes for the weirdly sterile pre-rendered cutscenes that, to me, have lost the appeal of the gritty original. EA asked us for our input and that's what we are giving them - in my opinion, they know little of what made DS so unique in the first place.

Honestly, I’ve seen my fair share of everything you’ve brought up in this, and thought it ridiculous from the start. Gunner Wright, Isaac’s VA, had to have his voice cut from the first one, cus one: the developers wanted it cut, and two: they almost went bankrupt from trying to animate the Leviathan tentacle pulling Isaac down the hallway…so, like they did for Sam Witwer in the original Force Unleashed, they modeled what we knew for the main character after his VA, before the MoCap tech was being used. They used to do that for everyone, but, here we are fifteen years later, and whose to say the whole of the original cast could even come back, or if they intended for them too…Nicole’s actress isn’t even the same, and with MoCap they’re gonna look like their actors…😂 I dunno. All of it is silly to me. I can see the argument of making Isaac look a little older, especially towards the end since anyone would be a bit grizzled after all of the experiences aboard the Ishimura.

While I love your explanation to Nicole's looks in the remake, I have to ask: how many had passed from the start of the infestation of the Ishimura untill the nearly complete wipeout of the crew? Two days? Three? Mere hours? That is way too short a period for developing the mentioned symptoms even when going without sleep for the whole time of the necromorph outbreak. Anyways, who says that Nicole could not be simply older than Isaac (now)? It is a remake. Things are meant to be changed to keep it interesting. Can I try an explanation? The USG Ishimura is an old planetcracker (the oldest in the CEC Fleet, with almost 70 years of work), so is possible that its age works against the crew, with failures and equipment breaking. So, this could make a lot of accidents happening. With a lot of injuries. So, a lot of work for Nicole to do in six months. She could be stressed. And then the outbreak of violence with the first phase of the Marker signal in the 3/4 days before the USG Kellion arrived. And then the necromorphs arrived, making her run for her life. A lot of stress.
