I had never been to Edinburgh, until I come across your vids, I have learnt so much from watching them, that I have been twice this year, and plan to spend my Birthday there, and It's all down to watching you and your enthusiasm for Edinburgh. Could you please include Miss Jean Brodie's steps, in one of your vids? I am going to walk them some time this year keep up the good work you bring more happiness to peoples lives, than you know....

Coming to Scotland next week. Didn't realize going up and down stairs is done the same way you drive on the roads. Saved this American some embarassment-thank you!

You know when you take a second look at somebody and think, 'Is it him?', then I spotted the T-shirt.You had that look of ' I'll smile and wave just to be polite, but I really don't know who you are', when I peeped the horn at you when I was in my white van on Abbey Lane last week. That made my day seeing you. I wish I had a chance to say hello personally. Good video again.

Wow ..💯 👌 ❤️ .I do my own vlog channel and when you have parked up at 4£ an hour and need to get back to the car fast. To avoid another hours parking for being ten minutes into another hour these little Local knowledge routes can add up to a free pint in the pub at days end .💯 ❤🏴🎬📽️

Oink! Is fantastic lol. We found that shortcut by accident as well. Didn't realize where Advocates Close or the Scotsman stairs ended up! Thanks for the tip Tony. Another is Lady Stairs Close from the castle down the mound to Prince Street and the Scottish National Art Museum

Didn't know about the second shortcut, but I use the other 2. The North Bridge renovations have also been affected by them finding more damage to the bridge than they knew. But at least they found it and they are rectifying it. Like your vlogs. I have lived in Edinburgh off an on from 1988 and have learn lots of things I did not know from your vlogs.

Another great, handy video.... Two of my favourites.... from Market Street up Fleshmarket Close, past Edinburgh's smallest pub, The Halfway House coming out onto Cockburn Street and either turn left up to the Royal Mile coming out by the Tron Kirk or up the second part of Fleshmarket Close and come out slightly further down the Royal Mile....of course, like all the others you can choose to go down as, we'll as up. And the other one is from the Castle to the Mound and Princes Street Gardens or Market Street via Lady Stairs Close including of course, The Writer's Museum.
@alanco6083 жыл бұрын
The Ultimate one....whenever it opens again is the path from the Castle esplanade down to Princes Street Gardens over the rail bridge coming out by the Ross Fountain and St.Cuthberts Kirkyard.

This is so crazy to me-- On the 22ND of September 2021-- just _days_ ago, I wrote a scene in a novel I'm writing, where a character takes a nighttime walk, up Victoria Street and takes those first stairs up to the terrace. I've never been to Edinburgh and had to just imagine it. I'm SO GLAD you recorded this so I could see what it actually looks like. Since the novel I'm writing is set completely in Edinburgh, this channel is a fantastic way for me to feel like I've actually been to the places I'm writing. I love this channel.

If you're going from the Castle to Grassmarket there are steps that run from the top of the Esplanade and continue to the middle of Grassmarket - you have to cross Johnston Terrace but the bottom of the first flight is opposite the top of the second.

Yeah, thought about them. But they are not that short.

Think it is worth noting that these handy helpful hints are also secluded spots & therefor attract a certain section of society that use these areas as public lavatories & other activities that require concealment.

I had no idea about the first two shortcuts. I use the Scotsman steps all the time. The Waverly steps on the other hand just no haha. There's also other steps if your going past Calton Hill that take you underneath Waverly train station. Great video as always Tony! :)

Hi Tony I enjoy your videos and my wife and we always watch with a nostalgic eye. However have you ever done a video which contained Nichol Musckets cairn which is located at the entrance/exit to the Kingy (Holyrood Park) Royal Park Terrace entrance? Most people don't notice it or even know it exists but as you enter the park it is on the right hand side and raised above the road. It is not easy to spot as you drive into the park. However there is a nice we murder story to tell fitting with the Edinburgh history of murder. Hope that your wifee and the wee yin are well and happy. Ken

I'm not sure the story about the coloured marble steps in the Scotsman Close is historically true? Looking forward to seeing the video Tony because i could be wrong. All i know for sure is i used to use those steps regularly back in the 1970's & 80's as a shortcut to go from a night out on the Bridges to get to Geo IV Bridge to catch one of the night buses that ran from Geo IV Bridge back in those days, and back then there were no marble steps, they were all granite or concrete... it also reeked of down and outs and urine, it was littered with discarded needles from junkies etc. It was also a micro hotspot for crime in the City Centre with multiple muggings and worse. There were also no gates at the bottom of the steps... that said i do seem to have a vague memory of hearing in the 1990's that the City Council (or was it The Scotsman Newspaper who owned the building and after whom the steps were named?) were going to install gates to stop the steps being used as a toilet and for drug abuse. In any case, if the steps were originally multi-coloured then they certainly weren't there in the 1970's & 80's, also back then women would never have used those steps unless they were 'of a certain light district colour'. I'm glad that the steps now appear to be a safe area for all and that the tiling on the walls has been retained, the tiling is exactly as i remember it, hopefuly now just looks like an old City Council conveninece without the associated aroma ;)
