Beet pulp is also a great way to get more liquids into your horse in the winter to help prevent winter impaction colic. Make sure to add lots of extra water (mine get half a cup heaped of BP in eight cups of water!). I add hot water and let it sit for about an hour. By the time they eat it, it's still warm and it doesn't have time to ferment in this time. I've never had a problem.

Plezant is so handsome. He doesn't look 22. My gelding will be 11 and is on Triple Crown complete-he loves that. He is on pasture 24/7 and access to round bales. He has mouth issues, low palate, normal tongue and his teeth are a little lopsided. He gets floats once a year and I ride him bitless for his comfort.

I have a gelding in his 20’s and one side of his mouth feels like smooth marbles from poor dental care throughout his life. I’ve been giving him grain that turns to mush that’s made by buckeye. He also gets vitamin supplements from horse guard, bute-less for any discomfort and a joint supplement from Buckeye. He still manages to chew up some hay but I’ve seen him spit it out on occasion. I feel like a mad scientist putting together his feed. This is informative for the day that my boy won’t have any teeth in the future. Thank you!

He's so handsome 😍 I have a 20 ish year old mare and she eats haylage just fine but I hadn't thought about whether she was getting less nutrients from it or not... Definitely something to consider as she gets older!

You can also add water to other feeds to soften them or put them in the beets.

Good video thank you! I do use timothy/alfalfa pellets by Standlee which I do soak w very warm water which breaks them down in about 24 minutes. No worries about "fermintation" bcuz he eats it up in about oh say 5 minutes so I watch him as he gobbles this up!😁

Very informative! Thank you 🙄 I'm going bitless so now I'm stuck with a bunch of bridles. Can you do a video on how to convert my existing bridles to bitless in a budget-friendly way? 😄

Wow your new horse is looking good! I learned about cooking whole oats from old time racehorse trainers. I actually use rolled barley as it isn't such a high energy feed.I boil water then pour in grain then turn off heat, putcovered pan into a styrofoam box, cover w/ towels and lid. then in the morning its nice and warm, all puffed up. It isn't that much grain , and I add my alfalfa pellets into that along with supplements. It keeps moisture in their system, and the weight on, and they usually get big dapples to boot. This is only for my old horses that have trouble keeping weight on. Thanks for the tips.

I think what you're referring to is when horses aren't kept out on grass grazing and pulling at the grass which keeps their teeth strong. Horeed that have a hard time eating hay in their early 20s or so were mostly stalled their hole lives I have heard

If keeping weight on him is hard try giving him oil not a strong flavered oil something reasonably nice smelling it is very high energy so he may get a bit over himself and bounce around more like a two year old some horses really don’t take to oil added to their feed I always usesd sunflower oil as horses generally like sunflower seeds but introduce it slowly to judge his reaction to it you may need to have a heavy hand with the molasses to hide the flavour of the oil

If not feeding senior feed add sand colic supplement...it's psyllium and prevents colic. I have 24 yr old with some missing teeth...he had near colic in past until adding psyllium. Most senior feeds have some. Because of his past I still add sand colic once weekly. He gets some hay to keep him busy too, lol.

I don't know what kind of vets they have in " show barns" , but in the bars I worked in and in my own barn the vets won't float horses teeth. if they don't need it . As far as beet pulp , that's a hard pass. These can have an affect on the animals blood sugar. I used to buy into the beet pulp hype until I saw what it did to my friends horses. Not good But making a mush is definitely a good way to go!
