Marchand's dancing reminds me of something George Balanchine said to his dancers: 'What are you waiting for? What are you saving for? Now is all there is.' He glides effortlessly across the stage, without a care in the world, except to his dancing. It's like nothing matters more than now, nothing matters more than dancing, and there is nothing to wait for, nothing to lose. Only now.

That's strange. He dances perfectly and effortlessly, but I don't feel that he is giving it his all. Perhaps the POB style is simply more restrained than the Royal Ballet or NYCB. In any case, he is to be admired.

@@philzmusic8098 Different personalities give different stage vibes to different viewers... Can you recall how many mistook the late, great Erik Bruhn as cold, due to his perceived style of dance? And yet, Rudolph Nureyev quipped: "He (Bruhn) is so cold that when I touch him, he burns me."

Aside from being charming, handsome and humble, Hugo immerses himself in each role and becomes the character as he executes very difficult choreography with such joy. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤

Hugo is 1m92 for 85 kg. That makes his gravitational center much higher and therefore any mistake is extremly hard to correct. The Solor variation and the Grand Pas Classique were filmed during Covid so he hadn't trained as much as he usually would have. As for his personality, he is as beautiful as a human as he is as a Dancer. Thank you for posting!

Perfection, phenomenal. Marchand is only 28 and was made an Etoile at 23 years of age. This is a superb compilation: there are too many good moments to mention but I particularly liked Dream and Gathering. Loved the playful flourish at 0:36 in in Esmeralda!

@@DavidLeBlancI expect Alu is the more eccentric in real life and a subtle paradoxical quality pervades his exceptionally fine and riveting work. Marchand is dependable, virile, with a perfect physique, processing a strong technique and straight forward demeanor. They are both endearing and quite different from each other in temperament. They are both great. Admittedly I miss Farouk Ruzimatov, an artist both these contemporary gentlemen could learn from.

There is something about him. The dancing is beautiful, but i think it is maybe his face: there is such great intelligence/personality/presence there. You want to watch him. You want to know what the character is feeling. He makes it feel like there are depths beneath the surface.

It’s amazing how vitally important live music is to ballet, at least to me. During the “Esmeralda” solo-to recorded music-Marchand’s dancing, while beautiful, seems impersonal to me, as though he’s going through the motions. All I could do was admire his graceful athleticism. Even if it’s a clunky, tinny sounding, out of tune rehearsal piano, you can see how important the immediacy of the music is in ballet.

Rissian guys especially from Bolchoi are trained like Circus athletes and the goal is to be spectacular even if it is no more Royal court tradition and often with a loss of turn out. French dancers follow Cechetti's school with an emphasis on the "bas de jambe" work, and no stretched arms (forbiden). If we could mixt a little of both schools...

Jumping is always more difficult for very tall dancers, like Hugo. But it is certain that he will improve, as he works very hard. He once said he realized that to dance is his only choice in life; so he has no choice but to improve.
