Try nitrile gloves mate. They're so much easier to work in. Its a bit odd at first as you can feel the bees through them but you get used to it and I won't use anything else now. Bees don't like the feel of them so they don't hang about much on your hands... do keep some spare handy though incase one rips.

That was fun, I just came in from checking my splits from last weekend. Queen cells success for us , although in 1 I had to cut one out and put it in a box that failed to make a QC. Nice way of getting the nice genetics to be added to the smarms caught.

You should watch the video called 'single hive management explained' buy Canadian bee... i don't remember the channel name exactly But its a great video not only about the over wintering but how they do splits and strengthen hives up I like the idea of shaking all the bees into the bottom box then put in a queen excluder then just pulling the top box off a few hours later to separate, you will understand it once you watch it

Do you inspect them at all while you wait for the queen to hatch or leave them for a month? Do you also need drones in the split to mate with the new queen? Thanks 🙂🙏

In my yard, if I was to shake bees into the split. The workers who fly home,90% of the time, will come back, within 24 hrs. and Rob that hive. I always take the frame to where nucs gonna be. Then shake em at the entrance. Never get robbing that way.

You can always put the queen excluder in between the 2 deeps and come back in a couple of days and see which box has eggs. My problem is finding eggs with my veil on. The single handed queen catcher is great for marking queens.

@christian Bush Bee Man Poker :D.. only playing.. in a previous video he talks about how he uses the playing cards to identify the hives for logging/records/auditing purposes.

Bees are great at recognizing patterns. It helps prevent drifting. One thing is though they tend to recognize the number patterns better than the face cards.
