Ed's Manifesto - Organic Medium KNIFE FIGHT (Review)

In this video, I'm talking about Ed Calderon's Organic Medium Class. In this class, I learned to establish a very intimate relationship with my weapon. It was definitely unlike anything that I had done before.. A lot of people have misconceptions when it comes to fighting with a blade.
I learned a lot about the different blades, their strengths, weaknesses, and what they were capable of. The evolution of knife fighting is happening in places where people are getting stabbed frequently. The other component of this course was not just understanding strike patterns but also understanding how to source everything you need in order to be armed. The chores truly accentuate the reality that there’s a difference between not being allowed to and not being able to be armed.
It’s a great course for anyone to take. It reinstates the idea of one mind, any weapon. It’ll help you to learn the life skills that will help you to live the life of a protector.

I took Ed's OME course. I now see nothing but weapons when I walk through Walmart. In all seriousness, it was one of the most enlightening seminars I ever attended. There were a few police officers, but not as many as there should have been. I use to be a CO and I had no idea what I would have never noticed until I took this course. I have every intention of taking it and any other courses Ed offers when he is near me.

If you are attacked with a knife from a close quarters' position you will get cut / stabbed, how many times before you disable the attacked would be the question. These symposiums and information that you put out are really good. I had to learn some of these things the hard way. Keep up the good work gentlemen.

Seems like a good course, I liked the technical drills. Also, I agree about karambits, I don't think they're bad or anything like that, but it is true that their way of use is not as intuitive as a regular knife. You can get prepared to be decent with any normal knife using basic drills, while karambits require a very specific understanding to actually be kinda good with them. Cheers, man!

Haven't really carried an edge for protection in years. When overseas in the 80's we used to carry screwdrivers, small knives, sharpened credit cards, cheap Bic ink pens........ Kenya, Tanzania, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Burma, Romania, Yugoslavia, Sicily, Spain, Mexico. The risk of having your finger de-gloved is one of the reasons I parted ways with my karambit. Spar with a trainer, your index finger will take a massive beating.

I am familiar with breaking the finger or de-gloving, but really at full speed in a true life or death fight is it realistic, & would it even matter if someone is trying to kill you or rape you if you are a woman? Now when I refer to a karambit I am not talking about a big fantasy one, but rather a shorter blade that is as close to perpendicular to your fist as possible so you can punch with it & penetrate much like a punch dagger. The Bastinelli Kalinou is a modern representation of the original karambits & is a design I like a lot. Also if my wife has the karambit in her weak hand & an attacker is using both hands & their focus on disarming her (which is very hard to do in a real fight) she now likely has the ability to draw her handgun, as well as use BJJ & striking to more effectively.

I'm a big fan of the small fixed blade in concert with grappling techniques. I carry a punch dagger when I can because I was a boxer for 10 years. So used in my left hand it is extremely familiar for me to use and to use up close or at a distance. That, or something like the fruit knife he talks about. You just need to be sure to have empty handed skills training and then learn to incorporate a blade into that. Knife fights are almost always very ugly and very up close. So learning how to work in that space is essential.

Digging into Craig Douglas @ Shivworks really got me thinking more about this & how my wife, kids, & I can integrate a knife & which knives into our BJJ, wrestling, & muay thai. My wife & I carry handguns so it would be silly to get into a knife duel, but are more likely to be attacked & while in contact range we can quickly deploy a knife & utilize it to end the fight, but primarily create space to more safely draw & use our firearms.

Schools I've been too don't put enough money and time into trainers. It is all, "grab a trainer from the pile I just dropped onto the floor and pair up". Real life is not like that, even if you carry a knife. Learn how to draw before and during a conflict. Your best chance of survival may not be trying to reach for your knife after the attack has already started, you need to break distance before you get the time to draw and employ.

Word of the wise carry a dagger preferably with full tang idc if its a kitchen knive or something fancy, i use to carry a folding stiletto and left my gun at home and got jumped by 3 guys and cracked on top of head with ahalf a brick ,there was no time to grab let alone fold out the blade till there were already running to car i learned the hard way , id take a sharpened screw driver any day with crdboard and tape sheef over a fancy folder cuz when it cracks off fast there no time to think and hopefuly u can grab and utilize you edge weapon before getting knocked out or over powered and out numbered

I'll bet you that if you tried to apply it, you would die. Try giving a practice knife to someone and let them do as they wish. Bet you die 9 out of 10 times at least. Especialy if it's by surprise. I know, having Had many real knife fights. I also have training. You have NO time to think. Try it, then drop the results. Make it as real as you can. The only real way is with real knives and protective clothing realy but just do your best. Either put lipstick on the practice knife and war black or use a high speed camera to count the wounds and asses the outcome. It would be fun and good to watch. Better to be trained than not trained. But over confidence well.... in a knife fight you WILL get cut. It's a matter of much and where

Yeah a knife is for defense against unarmed attackers, a bodyguard is for defense against anyone who is armed. Realistically, the only way to actually keep yourself alive is to be paranoid so you have time to see an attack coming and pull your gun.
