I'm a long time late here, but after trading in my sturdy and reliable 7D, my 7D Mk II just came today. Really looking forward to giving it a good workout. Along with my 1DX Mk III and 20D (not to mention my beloved original 300D that I've had for just about 20 years), plus some reasonably good glass, I'm really happy with my current kit. Since what I have will more than meet my needs for the indefinite future, I'm not concerned with moving to mirrorless.

@@The_Algorithm_ I love it! The pairing of that body (which is built like a tank) and the 24-105 lens is fantastic. When I go birding, I put my 100-400 on that camera and my Sigma 150-600C on the 1DX and things are in great shape.

Why does D3300 look soooo much better than the 7DII at 6:36? What are the settings? I dont think its that difference at ISO 100 ?????
@TheCameraStoreTV10 жыл бұрын
That's an ISO 100 RAW shot with no noise reduction applied to either image. Shadows were then boosted about 3 stops. No trickery, Nikon DX cameras just hang onto shadow details better right now. Jordan @ TCSTV
@1barnet110 жыл бұрын
TheCameraStoreTV d7100 or d5300 would do even better. Since these have 14-bit raw files instead of 12-bit. So one can extract even more detail from the shadows,

Koca Metallec On top of that, when I use a sharp high contrasty Canon lens the poor DR is even more obvious. I can save some of that in raw, but no work-around in movie. A lens adapter to sony E-mount seems to be the only way out for me. :-(

A lot has been said about shooting action and at low light. Would the Canon 7D Mark II also be good for portraits and weddings?
@kevindiossi10 жыл бұрын
So far, I would say yes. It's really knocking on the door of a 5D3 with some of its capabilities, but not quite there yet. Skin tones look amazing and accurate while the noise performance can work in most wedding environments. The honest truth is that at 10fps, I shot an event and let it do a 2-3 image burst for many shots - especially speaking people. You get home and throw them on the computer and see that one of the burst shots looks great and the others may have them with a weird expression or blinking. I see this as a real work benefit that surpasses the 5D3 for shooting an event/wedding. It it capable of possibly capturing a particular moment better.
@Smoothblue908 жыл бұрын
BRENNAN'S TECH BITE Yes, if you buy 7D for sports and wildlife it will be very good for portraits and weddings, but 6D and 5D will be better. If you buy 6D or 5D for portraits and weddings, they can still take sport and wildlife photographs, but 7D will be better the more and faster the subject moves or the smaller or farther away the wildlife is.

You have most beautiful looking video in months and guess what, it is done with 7D Mark II and you are actually talking about average image quality. Really guys? Please do not shoot some underexposed black object and than add +5EV in post to prove us how D3300 has better image quality. Why don't you go outside and take some three-dimensional color photos of something simple, like grass or sky and than try to show us how 7D Mark II has worse image quality than Nikon D3300. If you can. Also, just use that 70-200 at f2.8, please, do not be afraid. I am also surprised to hear comment about size and shape of the 7D grip. Still, amazing review, very informative, done with lot of effort and overall great production (not only because using Ronin). Well done!

ejbernal2 I like the compositions and a few of the shots in the review, but when editing I was constantly fighting the soft image and low dynamic range. It's subjective, but I think the X100T, Sigma Quattro, D750 and Phantom 2 videos look much nicer. But I'm glad that everyone likes how this episode turned out! Jordan @ TCSTV
@banemitic10 жыл бұрын
TheCameraStoreTV You just can't ignore colors that Canon camera produce. It is subjective, but everybody agrees about that. Immediately after I hit playback of this video I saw something better, more pleasant and then Chris said that you are using 7D2 for filming. Yes, dynamic range is not good on Canon DSLRs but it's not like it is much better on similar (DSLR) cameras. And second part of the problem and probably bigger regardless dynamic range is h264 compression combined with 4:2:0 which makes any color/exposure correction very hard. I am not defending Canon, I am just saying. But I have to defend Canon about "soft image." There are to many cameras with over sharpened videos that just are not pleasant. You have to remember that sharpness of digital sensors is big problem in movie industry. They just want image with less sharpness. If you use three digit ISOs you can make Canon DSLR footage sharp in post and it is not like every second you need amazing dynamic range, but it is very hard to replicate colors of Canon cameras and with compressed footage almost impossible.
@geoffreybassett67419 жыл бұрын
I sorry but recovery in post when things go wrong matters. Also I don't know why everyone is saying this video looks good. Blow highlights everywhere with poor rolloff. While I think sometimes other videos on this channel come across a little to flat, this is the horrible opposite extreme.

A big part of the appeal of this camera are the great lenses that work so well with it, particularly the new 100-400mm II. It's an exceptional package. For pros, the combo of one of the 5D variants + 7DII will be a pretty compelling package. The 7D adds capability rather than just being a backup.
@PeterBrockie9 жыл бұрын
One note about the 1080p/60 mode you would have mentioned is it has limitations. You do NOT get the on-sensor phase detect AF, nor can you record in ALL-I. Pretty annoying for someone like me who likes 60 fps video, but it's a good camera so far (for me) so I won't complain too much.

Although they both have very similar Dual Pixel Autofocus systems, the 70d does still have an advantage (for video especially), in that it has a touch screen, allowing you to select exactly where you want it to focus, as well as having a swivelling screen which allows you to use it at different heights. Both great cameras though!

Saw your 80D review, I decided to check this old one out. I'm wondering which will be best for video work. The 7D Mk II have more focus points, less moire, better lowlight and a clean HDMI out. The 80D have articulating touch screen useful for focusing, sharper video (from comparisons I've seen) and WiFi which enables monitoring and tap focus pulling with app. Really torn between the two.

Hi Guys, Nice review. Not big on DSLR filmmaking ,but yes for stills. The 7d Mark II looks good and has some nice features. I shot the TV series "Bluff" in Calgary with a 5d Mark III. At first, I was hesitant, but loved the way it held up under low light conditions. Images were very clear and holds up in a larger format. The 7d Mark II as well as most of the Canons are great for TV. In terms of filmmaking, after seeing the Nikon's image clarity on your review, I am sold. I would rather get the sharpest image possible and dumb it down in post later or ad a filmic look. I am going to look at more comparisons on here. Keep up the good work!

However, I've reached its limits (especially when photographing birds) and want to move up. Here is my dilemma: Do I sell my K-30 body and buy a K-3 now (only a few hundred $ out of pocket), keeping my existing lenses _or_ do I save my $ for another year until I can finally buy into Canon's universe of lenses with the 7D Mark II? I guess what I am asking (being the impatient sort ), what features, beyond lens selection and availability, are significantly superior on the Canon 7D Mark II vs the Pentax K-3? Also, does Nikon have something in the pipes for wildlife photographers?

I must say I disagree with your review. It is true that Nikon cameras have higher dynamic range than Canon cameras. Bear in mind that Nikon buys sensors from Sony, who is also a camera company. Will Sony stop selling sensors to Nikon one day? Who knows? It is a very poor business strategy to buy sensors from another company. Canon makes their own sensor - that to me is a great idea. Sensor, as important as they are for cameras, are not the only thing critical to users though. Most of the sensor shortcomings can be corrected in post. Being able to attain focus quickly and accurately is more important. You cannot fix an out of focus picture in post after all. Note today 90% of the Nikon cameras are made in Thailand or China. Even the D810 is made in Thailand. That again is a short sighted business decision. I own a lot of Canon cameras and lenses and all of them are made in Japan. I especially have a problem with goods made in China. Not that their quality or workmanship is poor, but I would rather not support a communism and totalitarian regime. I used to shoot exclusively Nikon. Until Nikon changes, there is no way I will use another Nikon camera, period.

I agree with you. I used to shoot Nikon until I found out that half their goods are made in parts of the world that are severely under paid. Im sure the cameras are still good quality but they decided to go with profit over ethics. Most large companies around the world do this but Canon has been the best so far from the major camera manufacturers. I cringed when I picked up a 1000 dollar nikkon macro lens and saw the "MADE IN CHINA" stamp. I like my Canon cameras and I find they shoot fine stills. Bottom line is that at this stage of the game, any camera can take a nice still. However, there are millions of terrible photographers out there that want to look at spec sheets rather that get out and shoot with what they have. I will not pretend that I am a fantastic photographer but I understand at this point that if I am unhappy with my shots it is because I did not take a good shot and that it was not a fault of poor camera tech.

VaFreeways imagine if half of Ford Motor Company's vehicles were powered by GM engines. Would it be a wise business strategy to work out such a deal - buying engines from one's competitor? What if GM stopped selling engines to Ford? OK, if Nikon could buy sensors from Sony and put them in their expensive FX cameras, could Canon do the same? If Canon were to use Sony sensors where would Nikon be? Either way, Nikon is not wise to buy sensors from Sony, its direct competitor.

opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ This actually remins me alot of Apple before they went to Intel. They had some shitty cpu's compared to Intel, so they had to make the jump! Canon is almost there. They sensors are, to be honest "shitty" compraed to Sony sensors. They will make the jump just like Apple did with there CPU's. And that's a good thing! No one says it's a poor business strategy for Apple to use Intel CPU's and mainly Samsung parts in there iPhones.

I still have my 7DII 4 years on and its been saturated with rain, salt spray, had a rough life in Aussie heat and cold yet still produces the goods. Yes the images can be soft in crap lighting but a little basic editing in lightroom and its fine. Its been a great partner to my 5DIII and as Im hearing there will be no 7D3 I think I will hang onto it. I've seen images in print taken by both the 7DII and the D500 and to be honest cant pick which camera took what, a lot has to do with the photographer and their editing skills, I will say that its a workhorse, not perfect but certainly never lets me down

As usual guys, phenomenal review. On another note, can you guys review the Sony A77II. It seems like a pretty compelling camera from the spec sheet alone, but from what Ive been able to gather it somehow disappoints.

Since the 7DII is an APS-C system would there be a difference in sharpness when using between an EF-S vs EF lens being used? EF-S lenses' rear glass is narrower and it's made to concentrate it's image on an APS-C sensor. Will an EF lens that has a wider rear glass element and used in an APS-C camera degrade the sharpness due to a larger image overlay upon a smaller sensor?

Well I have a 18-135 kit lens that came with my 7D mark 2, I did a test with the 18-135 at 100mm and my 70-200 F4L is usm at 100mm and the Fullframe 70-200 was more sharper.
@kanehi8 жыл бұрын
"L" lenses are a class of there own but that's nice to know. I have a non "L" EF 100mm macro lens and it's tack sharp on my 70D and 5DII.
@Smoothblue908 жыл бұрын
kanehi No. Same focal length. EF S does not focus differently. Just smaller resultant diameter. EF actually sharper on ASP C because uses middle of lens and does not have same edge and corner issues a full frame sensor will see. Buy L or EF constant aperature or prime lenses for best image.
@kanehi8 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a sharp EF lens it's disastrous on a APS-C camera. The flaw will be magnified.

Don't you just love it when big youtubers present false information ? Because they don't understand basic things like the fact that Canon and Nikon are processing images differently and that can give the APPEARANCE of one having better dynamic range than the other. Canon is well known for having more contrast in their color profiles than Nikon has and that obviously cuts down on the APPARENT dynamic range contained in the images, because that affects the way you make your exposure in the first place. But if you understand this aspect then you can setup Canon cameras in such ways that you'll get more dynamic range out of the sensor, by simply dialing down the in-camera contrast at the time of the exposure. Then you'll see that in fact Canon and Nikon are neck in neck when it comes to dynamic range. Or for example load the Technicolor Cinestyle color profile on a Canon camera to see the real dynamic range the sensor is capable of and then compare it to any Nikon camera from the same category. Not only that it will match it, but most likely it will also surpass it. It is simply a myth that Nikon sensors have better dynamic range than Canon sensors, myth kept alive and promoted by people who fail to realize that when comparing two different systems you can't be possibly comparing the same exact luminosity/color science behind the raw files. It is simply a software issue, not a real hardware problem.
@TheXaelem2 жыл бұрын
Aah buddy, you got it so wrong it isn't even funny. When shooting jpg then profiles have an affect, but when you shoot raw it has no affect whatsoever. Now I am no Nikon fanboy, I use canon exclusively and the 7dII is still to this day my go to camera, but it most certainly does have less dynamic range than competing Nikon cameras. No doubt about that.
@criticalpoint76722 жыл бұрын
@@TheXaelem You are dead wrong. Read my comment carefully. When shooting raw you check your histogram or your exposure meter, right ? And then you adjust your exposure settings accordingly, isn't it ? Well, the color profile you are using affects your contrast and because of this it also affects your exposure meter, so it can have an impact even when you are shooting raw. Because you are adjusting your exposure settings based on a color profile. So regardless if you are shooting raw or jpeg, the color profile will have a direct or an indirect impact on your dynamic range. I heard this argument 1000 times, that the color profile has no effect when shooting raw, but it definitely has, through exposure.

Hi I have got canon 7d ii and can't make it work for sharp continues tracking photos. What settings do you actually have if you shoot sport or wild life as when I use it I have 2 out of 10 photos sharp . Where my Sony a7r II can track perfectly... thanks

How the AF of this camera compares to the nikon d750, I know that is FF. But talking generally about AF through the viewfinder. And the sharpness of the pictures. I have the 70D and I get a lot of soft images even a high shooter speed and single focus.
@tonybarrett936510 жыл бұрын
What AF settings were used on the Rugby series, specifically Case number, tracking sensitivity, Accel./decel. tracking and AF pt switching? I am new to Canon, I have set the camera similar to my Nikon, any help would be appreciated.
@TK-vf6jw10 жыл бұрын
Tony Barrett I used "Case 3" in the AF menu. I set the camera to focus with the back AF button. I used the selectable AF 9 points, and used the centre AF spot, expanded by one, so the surrounding 4 spots were live as well. AF was set to AI Servo and the motor drive was set to high (10 fps). I shot that sequence with a Canon EF 400mm F2.8L IS II USM lens. The images were shot on Auto ISO in AV Auto mode F/4, with the range that the shutter speed could not go below 1/1000 of a sec.
@tonybarrett936510 жыл бұрын
Todd, Thanks for the reply, as I said I am new to the Canon line. I use back focus too, I haven't tried Case 3, I have been using Case 1 and Case 4, AF pt on the 4 and 8 plus the center. Have you adjusted the tracking or other settings available in the Case settings? I have shot 7 football games since I got it, I used it this past Saturday to shoot the OSU game for the first time, I used TV mode and Auto ISO, shutter speed 1/1250 - 1/1600, eval metering. Overall I am happy with it, I still have some focus problems but that could be me more than the camera. Thanks again, Tony Barrett

I love it how the cheapest Nikon APS-C DSLR has a better sensor the most expensive Canon APS-C DSLR. Kudos to Sony, who actually makes Nikon's sensors I suppose
@riccar1110 жыл бұрын
Ya right. Compare the Nikon at ISO 6400 to the 7D. Nobody mentions this fact. Canon sensors have always had better high ISO DR. Whatch the vid.
@reoflex9 жыл бұрын
Paul Hojda To be honest though, the advantage in picture IQ of Nikon's cheapest and Canon's most expensive, only apply with pictures taken in great light. Canon cameras will blow the cheap Nikons out of the water when it comes to shooting in low light, such as weddings, events, indoor sports. Still, Canon should take this as a problem that needs to be corrected. It shouldn't be making sensors that can't compete with the Nikon cheapie, especially at the price points they are selling these Canon Cameras.

Hi Chris. I would like to see your thoughts on the Sony A77m2. I have one and the focusing tracking is awesome! I had the old Canon 7D but I sold it and got the Sony and have no regrets.
