Hint: As an vanilla 7D user for years ... the ISO sweet spots for the 7D are multiple of 160 ... so use ISO 160 instead of 200. The next would be 320. ISO 160 is the native ISO for the 7D sensor and has the cleanest noise. And Topaz Denoiser is really the perfect 7D companion tool.

After using an EOS 300D for almost 20 years (and almost never using anything besides full auto), I acted on the advice of a friend from the West Midlands who is an expert photographer. He pointed me to a used 20D and 7D, and a couple of decent lenses. I'm really enjoying learning about taking control of my shots rather than letting the camera make the decisions for me, and I'm really enjoying watching your adventures with the 7D.

Just dusting off my 7D after not having done any real photography for several years. I considered getting a mirrorless with all those fancy bells and whistles, but no. The 7D is a great camera, one I researched for months back in 2010 or so. I made a very good decision way back then, one with which I'm still happy. If in six months I'm still building my skills, I just might pick up another body.

Having an older but quality camera is a great idea. And DSLR's are more rugged than most mirrorless, it seems. I like that the Canon's have good weatherproofing, I was thinking of getting a Pentax because they're known for good weatherproof designs. Great compositions!
@ChrisBaitsonPhoto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. Canon weather sealing has never failed me, that being said I do tend to be careful. The DSLR cameras always felt more robust to me. Mirrorless cameras aren’t bad - I just prefer older cameras.

I bought the 7D when it was first released, and it is still as good as the day I got it. I will never sell my 7D, its a rock solid workhorse. And if you know how to use it then DOES deliver pro-photo quality even today. The only drawback is that (compared to todays cameras) the high ISO levels are a bit too noisy ... but again if you know how to work with your gear there is alwasy a way around it. I will use it until it dies .... but being such a quality work horse I guess I might die before the camera does LOL

Can we name one camera, ff included, that doesn't produce noise at higher ISOs? 7D is no exception. But, it's manageable in post. Moreover, these days AI applications can efficiently take care of this issue.

One thing, rethink ISO…it doesn’t create noise, lack of light does, so don’t be afraid to shoot much higher than 100…more shots are lost to blurring than grain.

I use the Adobe colour profiles for my camera. Sharpness can be effecting by a number of things. Try increasing your shutter speed a little if handheld, sometimes the lenses play a part in how the image looks. Lower your ISO a little.

Is it suitable to use an 85 m.m lens? The 7d camera has an 18 mega pixel sensor Does it give a satisfactory result and beautiful accuracy with this lens or not?!
@ChrisBaitsonPhoto2 жыл бұрын
An 85mm on this camera would give you a 135mm field of view which would make it a good option for portraits. I don’t have an issue with the image quality coming out of this camera. At 18mpx it’s not the highest resolution sensor out there and fine details aren’t ever going to be the best but I’m sure you could get some great looking results from it. 85mm on APSC has been a great combination over the years.

My tripod is rated for 20KG and it holds the camera and my 100-400mm lens rock solid. A small amount of creep when you tighten up and allow it to settle but after that it’s all good. There’s a link in my description. It’s a K&F Concept tripod. About £110 on Amazon. I can’t recall the model number as they sent it out to me and the sticker has since worn away.

@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto actually you hit the nail! I live by the sea in Kemi, Finland. Is it really that sensitive, I mean if one don't splash sea water on it... @@cheebacheeo5876 I took mine apart at the weekend and lubed all of the twist locks and the grooves where the tripod legs slide. Feels a lot better but the sea salt really did start to gum it up. It’s the same for most tripods though - I tend to abuse them and complain when they start to get a bit jammed up. Bit of TLC though and it’s all happy again.

Nice one Chris. I was searching 7d vids as I was having nostalgic thoughts of my old 7d on the shelf. I bought it in 2009 when I had plenty of dosh. It was my first DSLR and I used it everywhere and all of the time. It got drowned in the rain until everything went foggy inside, but all dried out perfectly. It got drowned under a wave at the coast. It all dried out but killed the pop up flash ..... until years later when miraculously the flash started working again 😄. Some of my best quality images came off that 7d sensor after I began discovering lens quality. I paired it up with the nifty fifty STM which is arguably the sharpest cheapest lens money can buy and BOOM that was the moment I realised how good the 7d was. Pair it with any quality glass and you have yourself a bullet proof epic quality camera. I don't think I will ever sell mine. Too many good times 😎📷🙂👋

There’s an honestly in the images of older cameras. They don’t out resolve the eye so there is extra room in my opinion for interpretation. Modern Sony and Leica images leave me cold. Yet these images and older Leica digital images (eg the first M9) are full of character.

@robertoprestigiacomo2532 жыл бұрын
It's an excellent camera on many fronts but has 2 serious problems for today's standars related to the outdated sensor (the same that already in 2014 was mounted on entry-level cameras). 1) ISO - You can't go above ISO 400. Probably not problematic for landscapes, but keep in mind that the camera is not designed for landscape photography. Shooting in winter, on overcast days, indoor or outdoor outside the time interval 10-16 will not deliver good results. 2) Resolution - 18 MP today is not good for today standards (30+ MP). 7D takes good images, but as soon as you crop or upload images online and they go under compression, they become very average compared with photos that you can see around taken with modern cameras. There are several other small things that will probably make it uncomfortable to use for many people.
@roysalcedo11692 жыл бұрын
Shoot tight and compose well to avoid cropping. Learn proper technique and maximize pixels where it matters. So many great images that was produced with less megapixels. It’s not the end of the world.
@michalkubecek Жыл бұрын
1. Depends on the output, for web presentation, ISO800 is still fine and ISO1600 acceptable (and I'm certainly more sensitive to noise than most). Large prints are a different story, of course. 2. I agree about (aggressive) cropping, but resizing for online presentation and aggressive compression do in fact hide the differences in image quality, rather than emphasize them. (And it's up to you how do you resize and what compression level you choose.) From practical point of view, the 7D sensor is 5184x3456 which is about 44x29cm 300dpi print (i.e. almost A3). On screen, it's more than enough for 4K. Sure, there are people who do actually need 30Mp or more for various reasons but it's a minority.
