Hey everyone, I got my m50 the other day and I thought that I would share my thoughts on this camera. First of all, the demographic is for entry level users which I am, so a shorter battery life is perfectly fine for someone like me because I'm not constantly taking photos at a paid gig. The battery has lasted me two days of casual photo taking on one charge. I put an effort to use the camera as much as I could even! On the second day I was holding the shutter on high speed mode so I could discharge the battery quicker. but to be fair, I did turn off continuous autofocus. Image quality is great, awesome for photography I think. I have a lot of canon glass and the adapter worked like it would on a full body DSLR. The focus is spot on. Just about all my images are sharp and in focus. Some things I don't like about the camera I if I place my finger near the top of the screen the sensor kicks in and switches to the view finder which is quite annoying. It also takes a second for the viewfinder to actually switch, that irritates me the most. For video, it's pretty weak and all of that is already covered in the video. The new RAW format had irritated me a lot because none of my post editing software supported it and using canons software caused errors in some of my images during in the conversion to JPEG. I really like this camera and I certainly don't regret buying it.

Let me know if I am wrong but for someone like me that can’t use 4K because of my pc this has everything I want. Great af, flip screen, 1080p 60, mic jack, evf, and for someone like me that shoots with an m and m3 mainly using 720p 60fps for slow-mo and has a bunch of batteries and two lenses it seems to me it is the only camera that has all those features. If I am wrong tell me what else does...minus the lens thing that isn’t that big of a deal. I am not someone that "has to have canon". Thanks.

I edit 4k videos every now and then (for my gf and other friends), and it takes like what? 15-30m? Is it really that long? Just do something else, workout, eat, do some other work.. Why people want to make videos in 1 min or its a no go? Im really curious. Whats the thinking behind this? I got the oooold 7-8 year old CPU (4cores) and it works well. Any more modern CPU will probably speed it up way more? Yea if it takes 1 hour.. then its a bit too long, but i doubt it takes that long if people have anything after 2016.

When I say I can't I am not saying that it takes a while to do anything. I mean literally the file will not play on my computer. It just is jumpy and glitchy. I am not exaggerating when I say can't. Then there is the issue of my editing program doesn't go higher than 1080p. But even just the footage straight off camera will not play. All that being said is there another camera that has all of the features I am looking for?

I feel like anyone who’s like “I’m dumping Canon for Sony!” is pretty much the same type or even person who ALSO said “I’m dumping Canon for Nikon!” a few years back. Here’s the thing - anyone who’s serious about photography shoots with more than one body. You’ve got a main, and you’ve also got some kind of secondary (and I’m not talking about a backup) from another company. Sometimes you sell it pretty quickly and other times you hang on to it because it’s pretty great... but you still have a ton of lenses in your original system. What ends up happening is that OVER TIME, this other body, if it’s meeting your needs and working well, starts to accumulate lenses in your lineup and eventually you switch to using it more. There’s no sudden moment of “I’m jumping ship!” because lenses are what matter way more than bodies. The only people who scream and gnash their teeth and post comments about changing bodies because x company is sooo behind and y company is killing it are people who care more about specs than the actual art of photography. They also probably have a kit lens and something like a 50mm and that's it. These are the same people who you probably couldn’t tell the difference between their before and after switching shots because that new body didn’t make them any better. Here’s a hint: it never does.

If they dumped their Canons for Nikons, why would they still dump Canon for Sony? Shouldn't they be dumping their Nikons for Sony? Or did they switch back to Canon and are now dumping it for Sony? Or are they just saying they're dumping their Canons but not really doing it cos they don't want to sell it for so cheap?

Though the lenses I got are more expensive than a Full-Frame Body. ;-)

You're missing his point. What he's saying is... We've been hearing people saying they're dumping Canon for "X" since 2009 but Canon's sales numbers suggest they're still very relevant and king - because the actual professional photographers and enthusiasts invest in glass over bodies time and time again. Its the rise in vloggers that makes ordinary photographers think that there's a mass exodus of both Canon and Nikon, and these individuals come to comment sections such as these with the same rhetoric. Meanwhile, I still have an original EOS M as a second body and will probably finally jump to the M50 after 4 years of owning the M - because I have 2x EF-M lenses and the adapter which gives me access to my other 3x EF lenses form my main body. For me, I primarily shoot photos and I'm personally excited for .CR3. Do I feel let down by Canon? No. I was never going to sell my first-gen EOS M after just 2 years of owning it because I don't upgrade bodies at every opportunity and with every release cycle. No enthusiast does unless they're doing it for KZbin.

Great review. Chris and Jordan tell it like it is. I was this close to pulling the trigger. I was looking to downsize my backup cam (70D) with something like this. Something a little smaller, lighter.. something I wouldn't feel too badly about if it got dropped, smashed or stolen. But I'll take my chances with the 70D.
@Traumglanz6 жыл бұрын
Sounds odd when the m50 seems to offer better dynamic range, better AF, better video, more FPS as well than the 70D. What do you miss about the m50 to not use it over the 70D as backup? Outside of the obvious battery life. ^_^
@scottbowen65146 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem like a huge step forward to warrant the $800. I'd need to get at least a kit lens for it, I'd need the lens adapter, another few hundred bucks... and at the end of the day I have something "just a little better" than my 70D. The M50 is a little smaller sure, but the 70D is here, it's paid for, it works fine. I feel like I would be going backwards.

Cropped 4k and no DPAF in that recording mode is pretty disappointing. A recent DPReview interview with Canon executives made it sound like 4K DPAF was not included for marketing reasons rather than technical, though it's possible the translation was off. I was considering a trade-in of my SL2 plus cash for an M50, but the size difference doesn't feel like enough to justify the added expense. That said, I'd love to eventually have a few ef-m cameras for video as long as they have decent quality and DPAF. Maybe next time.

Even 3 years ago it'd have been a credible entry - not class-leading or anything, but at least good enough to put a fight up against the G7 and A6300. Also, it would've hinted at better developments from Canon down the line, and to me, that's the huge issue - what's in store for their future? We can guess that Sony will introduce an A6500 successor in CP+ 2019 at the latest, and Panasonic a G85 successor after that, and both will almost certainly be extremely competent, well-rounded cameras with sophisticated feature sets. What will Canon introduce by then?

Pawan kumar why should you get M50 instead 200D. 1. Latest image processor (digic 8 while 200D is digic 7). 2. M50 is better at low light situation 3. More focus point then 200D. 4. It can support any canon EF / EFS lens (dslr lens) wih adaptor. 5. Lighter - its a breeze to carry around trust me this one is important.

@@gothickah0 not the op, but thanks from as well! Started planning on getting an entry level camera. I also have been thinking between 200d and m50. The lens options do weight a bit on the scale, but as I'm more interested to use the camera on outdoor activities and indoor sports, I think out of the box M50 can hit my needs better? And as the price in Finland is really similiar for both (600e/700e), that doesn't have such a big factor in it.
@1barnet16 жыл бұрын
here the M50 is 699 euro with the 15-45mm The Fuji X-T20 is obviously the better camera. But at 949,- with the 16-50mm it's not directly competing. it's a bit more expensive then the Panasonic Gx80 but then i'd say Canon made a slightly better camera too. The Dual pixel 24mp just beats the old Panasonic 16mp sensor. It has a better EVF too. Overall i honestly like the proposition with european pricing. No it ain't brilliant nor exciting but here it looks competitive. If they actually had a useable native lens line-up with a decent focal length macro and a damn portrait lens.

@TheCameraStoreTV I'm a beginner looking for a full-featured DSLR to grow with (particularly auto-focus, viewfinder, mic input, hot shoe, 1080p video with timelapse and slow mo capability). My options I'm considering are the SL2 and the M50 featured here. I was looking at mirrorless for form factor and the fact of being able to shoot video and frame with the EVF but it's hardly 100% necessary. At the cheaper price, I'm considering the SL2 but being fairly sure Canon will dive deeper into mirrorless (if not out of sheer survival), part of me wants to go mirrorless and buy EF-M lenses. Besides, it will take me a while to learn the camera, and the lenses being I'm a beginner and don't have a ton of money so I don't need a HUGE selection. That all being said, would it be more advantage to get the SL2 and have access to more cheap and used lenses, or get the M50 or another M series camera and have a smaller form factor and EF-M lenses so that when a better mirrorless camera is annouced I will have a nice collection of M series lenses and no need for an adapter.

When you’re spending 800 USD, you can get better. A G85 with a 12-60 kit lens is 900 USD, and is far superior for video and will take damn good photos. Oh, and the G85 has IBIS and focus that’s no worse than the M50 in 4K.

Curious, it seems to be different in Europe regarding the pricing - in a store in Poland, EOS M50 is just 65% the price of the Sony A6300, and I expect the Canon price to drop.

Then you should buy the M50 if price means that much to you

I think you are better off with a bit more expensive Sony A6300 (also APS-C) from what I see if you want to use it for video mainly.

I think people would be better buying the Panasonic G80/85 instead of the M50. I can't believe that you can't use the dual pixel AF for 4K video, not good. Also, I agree with you that Canon needs to put out more native lenses for this system. If they want to compete, please give us a decent compact super telephoto lens; maybe such as a 200-600mm f4-5.6, that would be great for wildlife shooters-just a thought!

Excellent in depth review, yet again! I would say I'd subscribe, but I already have. That said, I want to like this camera. I really do. I'm glad Canon is finally starting to venture out of their comfort zone and trying new things, but I am skeptical on the delivery of the M50. To be honest, I'm not completely sure who this camera is for. The 4K is severely limiting and has a lot of issues, slim lens selection, and a competitive market surrounding it? I don't see this selling a lot of units especially not to the Sony and Panasonic faithful. I'm a Canon user myself and as a videographer, I can't bring myself to fully appreciate this camera, even as a first run into the 4K mirrorless world.

Hello, i am interested in buying the M50 but i am also considering the D5600 from Nikon. Can someone tell me which is the best choice here? I don't care about video so much. I just want a good option to go around with my bicycle and take photos! I know about the battery life and the weight differences. So.. Is hybrid AF important? Is Digic 8 far superior than expeed 4 or it doesn't matter at all. Any other important info about this comparison?

Well since you do not care so much for video, I will give you my experience, I had a D5600 for about 2 years, and it is a camera I loved, used and abused. I also had a EOS M6, not the M50 but I love the colors (typhical to cannon) and I can say after all the riews by the pros, for you, I can say you will love the M50 more since it is smaller. If you consider the "system" well Nikon is much better and bigger, but I remember my trip to California on my motorcycle and I had my D5600 and several lenses, and mostly they were NOT use, and instead used my cellphone and it was good enough, the reason was because a big DSLR takes time to secure on a motorcycle (since I did not had a Pelican case custom made for me) and the phone was always in my pocket. The EOS m6 is nice, it does feel like a toy camera (inly because I love the DSLR bodies) but It takes some great pictures and has items such as many dials that make photography faster. Now I do not have the M6 since I sold it to my friend, and I am looking to buy a M50 or similar. ALso consider the M100 / m200 from canon as another option, it is even smaller than M50 and have almost all the features (for pictures). Cheers!

You wonder if it incompetence or arrogance. But adding their dual pixel AF technology to this and the 200D is a Hail Mary move from canon. They are flaunting their only ace in the hole. And their half hearted 4K attempt, though questionable, is still appreciated.

Hey! Really like your videos. I learned a lot. If I may, can you please help me decide what to buy between EOS M6, G7x Mark 3 and M50?

I quite like the M50.. I currently own an M3 for my casual shooting (5D3 and 5D2 for serious photo work and GH5 for serious video) and the side flipping LCD really sells it to me.. Just wonder what they will bring next as an M5 replacement with 4k with dual pixel autofocus.

Thanks for a comprehensive review. Do you know if the WiFi ability of the M50 allows for sending photos automatically to an iPad as well?

Agree so.much about the lack of good native lenses. They really need a fast normal zoom and a 35mm and 56mm prime

as a heavily invested Canon user, it sad to see them lagging farther & farther behind. first with VR...but Olympus, Panasonic, Sony & now Fuji are far, far better, first with SLR hi-res video, now they're bringing up the rear. Today, if someone asks for a recommendation...it won't be Canon.

spamboli you must be unhappy. I am happy with Canon, good gear becomes sheaper and sheaper. It's all about pictures not gear. www.abvandalen.nl

lagging at what?AF is still the best in the market and i guess that is the most important part for me. tilting Touch screen is pretty much the best in the market to date. another very important aspect. 1080 24/60 is pretty much ok. In other reviews and in some KZbin channels that has been using the M50 has been awesome ie Potato Jet... i guess it still boils down to who's using and what it's used for.

What Sony and Panasonic camera would you recommend to compete with the M50 at the same price point?
@luckynever82086 жыл бұрын
for the price its pretty good just dont expect its a 4k camera
@ladislavsvencik6 жыл бұрын
Lucky Never it's not, 4 years old A6000 does better at everything with lower price except the touch screen. You have to be asking what Canon has been doing those 4 last years with no progress.

i am buying A7III but i think M50 is the best vlogging camera
@RogerSanderson5 жыл бұрын
I think it will compete with Sony actually, I mean if you compare the price of the kit & an extra lens. I do agree they need to push lenses out before pushing out new camera models. You have been hard on Canon, but you seemed more positive with this even with the honest negative sides. I love Sony as well but they can learn from Canon on making some budget friendly models without sacrificing great features.

having a hard time deciding between the Canon eos m50 vs Sony a6300. I am not a vlogger. I do 70/30 photo/video...
