Another super episode. Thank you. Just a thought here. Reference to your last question by a subscriber regarding what birds to keep. I fully understand the importance of any hopeful young bird that's worth it's salt to stay in the genetic pool and keep that strong line going. However if one was to aquire birds off a breeder with the same thought process, then what is the chance of that person actually getting a good bird/pair/trio to get him/herself started, if they are, let's say not worth keeping at all in the birdroom for whatever reasons? Are the new potential hobbiests just buying or being gifted seconds, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I know a line can take many years to achieve, with ups and downs in between, but how is one supposed to start off with good birds if breeders are not willing to sacrifice a decent pair or two to help new canary keepers?

It's a really good point, many fanciers, myself included, will of course let quality stock go to help newcomers and experienced fanciers alike. A lot depends on the volume of stock that you breed year to year as well. So, for example, I anticipate breeding about 70-80 Fifes this year, I have 10 cock birds from this year, which I'll keep 4 or 5 so, there's only room for 7 or 8 new cocks this year. Assuming 50% of the young are cock birds a fair number of very good quality birds will leave the room this year as I won't have the room for them. Cheers Matt
