I had a 2003 LS430. The display went blank, and all my service reminders vanished. After researching, I called the dealer. The control unit in the trunk would cost $2,000. This control unit was really a DVD player. After further research, I located a used one online for $125. Installed it myself, and it worked perfectly. It even came with updated DVDs with the new road maps.

I have a 2008 LS460 with 150k miles and only needed to replace the poorly designed control arms. With regular maintenance, this car is a dream to use on long road trips. I don't need a Rolls Royce. My LS rolls fine!

The control arm is fast moving part on LS460 just like brake pads on normal car. Laughable quality which marks a downhill for Lexus.

They used a Fel-Pro valve cover gasket, I recognize it because I used it on a car that was eventually totaled 4 months after installation. I mean, it didn't leak in those 4 months, but at least I didn't have to deal with whatever would've happened in the long run

Laughed at 40:17. I have dealt with the older style on my 95 4Runner 3vze. On that engine, they're called cam shaft plug, or something along those lines. After a full engine removal & tear down to the short block, both of them leaked at one point or another during the first 500 miles while breaking in new ring & pinion. IMO, The Toyota FIPG placement is absolutely critical for valve covers to seal properly. Funny thing is.....my oil pressure is higher (better?) than ever. The 3vze is well know for fairly low oil pressure, but now mine is hovering around halfway on the gauge. Keep up the fine work. Some of us Toyotaholics simply enjoy your content, and learn more each video.

The fact that there were a couple parts of that engine that were made up of a hodgepodge of parts, such as the coils, and the engine still lasted to 600,000 should be even more of a testament to Toyota’s quality.

The Half moon plugs are there to seal the outside of the head, because when the head is made the cam bearings are bored it also bores the outside of the casting, which means the half moon cut has to be sealed.

As a qualified toyota tech here in Aus - I’m a branch manager of a service /parts toyota location and I can relate to a lot of what you do - quality parts used on quality vehicles -lol . But my main reason for commenting is like you I like a large comfortable quality car - so I bought one a 2011 toyota century - so time for you to buy one - after seeing to rolls Royce drive - just more of the “Beer” budget . I have all these ideas for improving ride quality (optimiizing suspension frequency, reducing unsprung weight, new tire technology that aborbs a higher assortment of road imperfections) but sporty firm ride with more road feel seems to be in these days as it's easier and cheaper to design.

I about shit my pants when I saw how nice the cross hatching still looked, I remember about a year ago, I took apart a Jeep Liberty motor with 160,000 miles, and the cross hatch was completely gone. I used one of your old videos when doing the valve covers on my own LS. Paid extra attention to ensure the correct orientation of those spark plugs seals. There was quite a bit of debate about it on the internet forums...Appreciate all the informative content you've posted over the years. It's helped me to restore my LS and hopefully enjoy it all the way to 600k!

Love my Toyota. Got an 08 Solara convertible for super cheap fixed it up to near perfect (no more leaks). It’s currently at 128k miles and has had the timing belt and water pump done at 100k. Nothing but classics and Toyota from here on out. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.

Those half Moons serve a very important purpose. They provide clearance for a honing machine to hone the bearing surfaces for the camshaft during head manufacture.

CCN did this same, fine gasket work on my LS430 last year. At that time, I’d have loved to watch him do that work- but here it is!! Fascinating stuff. I know for some, this is a DIY job, but for me this is like Dentistry and Tax Preparation: there are some things worth paying for to have them done right the first time. Great video!

I really enjoy watching certain other automotive repair channels with each of their quirks. The way they can entertain us by poking fun at their own level of professionalism all the while doing as good of a job as anyone's ever done. We'll call that junk food for now and I love it. But as the Ytb algo dropped me here like a rock I got reminded that not only is it necessary to BE on your A game, (I just did that, sorry.) but to also be passionate enough about the trade to be the reference for how things are supposed to be done. Owned a Toyota or Lexus since 1984. Love this channel. I have a 2018 LC200 that I want to drive as long as I can and a LC500-C that I just got. I would recommend replacing head light assemblies as part of the detail. Bringing back with compounding never lasts. It will make the car look new.

The half-moon seals exist because the head is line-bored with the cam journals fitted so that they are a precise match for the camshafts. The seals block off where the tool has to go. They are on pretty much all overhead cam engines. Keep up the good work. Enjoying the LS rejuvenation but would be interested on how much you have spent on parts so far. 🙂

I would like to do this on my 09 camry 2.4L, even though it does not leak, but am guessing there is no gasket, just sealer. It will turn over 200K next week, gonna replace the radiator myself, looking a little crusty at the bottom. My stomach was in knots when you peaked inside with the bore scope, glad everything was "OK".

I love this series. I have an 01 LS 4439 w/ 164k miles. The car came from Connecticut and the clear coat is peeling and paint is rough but it is very mechanically sound. You showing how and why to do repairs and maintenance really helps me.

Just did the valve covers and tube seals on mine. Those blue seals are “aftermarket” from what’d I’d imagine to be a local parts store. They are OEM spec but not OEM. They work fine (had mine on for 10k miles) when installed correctly. These do indeed look like they were installed upside down lol. Which makes sense why they came out so easy. My tabs were also cut on my valve cover but the seals had to be pressed in and stayed snug. Just a little insight someone who has used the “beautiful blue” seals haha. They work fine.

Disclaimer. Several companies use that blue. The ones I got specifically from oriellys worked perfectly fine. They happened to be blue but may not have been the same as what you show in this video.

Whoever worked on that engine and did the valve knew what they were doing and they manage to keep the car running despite it all and keep it cheap.The car was running no problem.And that mecanic worked on a lot of lexus or machine like that .

I am doing the exact same thing with my son’s 150K mile 05’ Lexus ES 330 by completely replacing all of the rubber parts (hoses, grommets, gaskets, etc.) suspension, brakes, and smaller parts both inside and out with OEM Lexus parts. The car runs like new, burns nothing and everything works. Thanks for sharing this project and your skills as I have watched you since you started in your garage and have learned many good habits on how to work on my Toyota and Lexus cars. Outstanding. I also enjoy large RWD sedans and also drive an LS430. I have driven 07 + LS460's and there are clearly advantages to the LS430 quality wise in my opinion. Toyota is a great company but something happened around '07 and beyond with many major car manufacturers, where the quality of many vehicles seemed to shift over to "value added engineering". I had been looking at newer LS460's but I simply cannot find fault with my LS430 enough to want to replace it. So I have been keeping it up in the same fashion as yourself. I did the VC gaskets a while back as they were leaking in the same way. It came from Florida so it was rust free when I bought it about 6 years ago. There was actually a pristine seashell sitting wedged in the undercarriage that I retrieved when I was working underneath it, and the shell now sits on my desk. Thank you for your excellent content.
