@@Mr-Clark Kilmer is notorious for click bait. He says he’s an honest mechanic. But it’s dishonest to post a headline that says one thing, then do a video that’s different. I had a lexus nx which is a turbo 2.0. While the car acceleration was good and fun for city driving, it felt underpowered when driving interstates highways at 80 mph. I needed to constantly floor it and it felt like it was struggling at high speeds. With my v6 highlander full of my family and luggage the car drives buttery smooth and never lacks any power even going near 100 mph. Most likely I will remain with this car for as long as it could. New cars with their 4 cyl don't entice me.

Originally developed as Pontiac's new economy car engine, it was used in a wide variety of vehicles across GM's lineup in the 1980s as well as supplied to American Motors Corporation (AMC). The wife and I just picked up a 2023 with the turbo 4 last march. Mpg is great on the highway particularly. Honestly power delivery is great and it packs a real punch when you kick it into sport mode. I’ve been doing my own 5k oil changes with synthetic oil to make sure we mitigate any future oil related issues. Easy to service spin on filter. I honestly wonder why they haven’t used this engine on a sport version of the Camry. I think it would really suit it, especially if tuned for a little more top end horsepower and less torque. All around great car and hoping I can get a long life out of it!!!

I'm glad I bought one of the last Avalons recently. I really wanted the V6, and I'm glad I have it. It's pretty much last chance to get one at this point. It took my dealer over three months to get another Avalon after they sold me mine. Apparently, Toyota does not produce any other V6 sedans besides the (rare) Avalon, the Camry TRD, and Lexus models. Out of curiosity, I did a nationwide search for Camry XLE V6 and there are none. Zero, zip, nada. So don't expect to get one next year, even if the brochures may have it. I think most people forget that Toyotas where first introduced with 4cyl. engines non turbo for the most part. I think it wasn’t until the 90’s when they decided to introduce the v6 in their pickups and people were skeptical about that engine until they became Main Stream. Now they are going back to their roots but introducing the 4cyl. only now it will have turbos. Even the Tundra was introduced with a v6 engine and when it grew in size they had to put the v8 we have come used to. Change is never easy, especially for the buying public but Toyota has always come through in the end. Sometimes with a few hiccups but they don’t leave it alone, they work until it’s right! We will just have to get used to the new setup and I’m sure in time these will become the norm and we will wonder why we ever needed a v6 in our cars or the v8 in our trucks. Thanks for the introduction! Love how the shop is looking!

I think you hit it on the head perfectly. So many people HATE turbo charged engines. I personally, love them - turbos simply take advantage of wasted energy. Personally, I wish all stock vehicles were turbo-charged. So many people hate them because of the breakdowns and expense associated with them. But much of that is due to improper maintenance and abuse. If you aren’t stomping on the accelerator (keeping the engine out of high-boost,) if you’re giving the turbo(s) a minute to cool down before you shut the engine down, and if they turbo/engine has been engineered by a quality company like Toyota, I think your vehicle can be nearly as reliable and a great investment. I recently purchased the 2022 Highlander Hybrid Platinum. The electric motor combined with the 4 cylinder engine puts out amazing torque from the start and gets it down the road admirably on the highway. I’ve been getting 35-37 mpg in town and 35mpg on the highway. The car is very comfortable and quiet. Some complain that the 4 cylinder with the hybrid system is noisy at full throttle. Our car isn’t. Maybe because the Platinum package has the acoustic glass and side or door panels. I’m extremely pleased with this SUV. The turbo 4 cylinder will have to prove itself. I’ve owned vehicles with small displacement 4 cylinder turbo engines. That turbo has to be running all the time for normal everyday driving, especially with Highlander’s weight of 4,450 lbs. Cheers for Toyota if the turbo 4’s have good reliability.

Man you are a gem, thank you for the clear and concise breakdown of the new incoming 4Cylinder Turbo. Sad to see the end of the V6 era, but toyota has to keep with regulations and the times. With enough advancements, hope they can make a turbo engine that is just as or at least almost as reliable as the outgoing V6. Maybe the new tech like the rotary engines or alternative fuel sources might open a new era for ICE engines.

The famous 3SGT-E 2.0 litre 4cylinder engine will do 300, 000 kms without any bottom or top end attention even when driven hard as long as you give them an oil change every 5K-6000kms. Great content bud, love your insight and honest love the accent you have also, my greatest “hurt” to all this about 2023 and every manufacturer is that the days of purchasing a vehicle and hopefully driving it to payoff and beyond are going to be tough. Especially for the home type mechanics. I hope the industry proves me wrong! I do… Also it’s going to be very interesting to see the “usual” difference between USA made and Japan made vehicles. I promise you you’ll see a stark difference as time goes on. I wrote Service for 18 years for Honda/Acura. Mostly for Acura when they started to transition to USA made vehicles. The Integra, NSX, RL…. And USA made TLs had unbelievably different numbers in warranty repairs when compared to the truly Japan assembled imported cars. Man it was crazy! I love the engineering challenges the tightening of the parameters has created, but Toyotas middle finger to the US has been threefold! The Supra being a frikken BMW, Tundra dropping the V8, lastly and greatest disappointment in the Toyota world is the Land Cruiser 300 series dropping the tailgate! Now it seems this is the 4th “middle finger” from Toyota! Good grief! Anyways, keep up the great work and “motor” on, hahaha…. I’ll keep watching and learning! 👍👍👍

@@douglasscovil3447 well I'm not sure about not ever buying a turbo gas engine. Diesel engines stand up better to forced induction because they are usually built to handle higher pressures of compression ignition from the start. With good engineering and design there is no reason gas turbos can't be as durable. All the parts need to be stronger then NA engines. The issue is we have engineers that are pushed to cut cost of production and we get things like some of the Ford eco boost engines that have issues with the cylinder heads and head gaskets blowing because there isn't a good enough sealing surfaces or head bolt patterns.

I am not a fan of these smaller turbo engines like the one in the Tundra and now the Highlander. I personally think a naturally aspirated V6 or V8 will always be more reliable than a forced air engine. These smaller forced air engines work harder and are subjected to higher internal engine pressures. It's funny because currently people often find they get better mpg than advertised with current and previous Toyota engines but from what I've seen the advertised numbers on the "efficiency" of these new engines is not accurate and is virtually unattainable because it's not based on real world driving. When people drive normal, I believe that the larger engines actually do get equivalent and sometimes better mpg that their smaller forced air counterparts. So it basically generates the opposite of its intent and brings long-term reliability into question to boot which is the hallmark of Toyota and Honda. Ford has done this with EcoBoost and while the power numbers are impressive the reliability is not. I truly hope Toyota proves me wrong but only time will tell.

I work at a company that makes engine parts for Toyotas, we are still running parts of the A25 btw. The only main V6 is the twin turbo they have for the new Tundra, everything else is getting scaled down and turbo- 2.4 turbo OR hybrid/EV etc. Old school NA V8s and V6s are going the way of the doodoo bird. The 3cyl turbo motor is getting alot of attention as well.

*BMW N54 wastegate rattling issue intensifies* BMW went towards electrically controlled wastegates for their next generation turbocharged engine. Instead of requiring a turbocharger rebuild or replacement with the older design, you can slap a $50 part on the turbocharger, do the adaptation relearn, and be done. There are ways to improve the old design, you could upgrade it with a billet bushing. Hopefully Toyota didn't cheap out here, and used a high-quality bushing that won't fail 10 years down the line

My sister-in-law ran the V6 for 10 minutes at highway speeds with no coolant (don’t ask). The water pump had a massive failure, all the coolant left the engine, the temp gauge rose a bit then started back down because the temp sensor was no longer in contact with liquid. The plastic upper intake manifold actually melted down into the lower manifold. Astoundingly, the only real damage was a burned-through ring land on one piston. Everything in the lower end was fine. One of the best engines ever designed and manufactured. The turbo-four has a tough act to follow.

Yea better if you stay away from the V6 twin turbo since V8 was more reliable and was also naturally aspirated aswell...

Again, another awesome video by AMD. If this engine was built for a turbo from the beginning,I would have more trust in it. As we see here, it is not. That tells me the crank, bearings and rest of engine originally is not designed for the added stress and power placed on it now… Time will tell! Thanks Again Sir for another excellent honest video!!!

If you want a sedan with a v6, and want to get it for less than 60k, time is running out fast. New emission regs are causing us to revisit the early 70s, when dramatic emission regulation changes brought us a decade of badly designed and short-lived cars. I still remember cars from the late seventies and early 80s that looked almost new, but were junk after 3 to 5 years' use due to major drivetrain flaws caused by hasty, unresearched design changes that were made to meet the new emission standards. Today, the new turbo 3 and 4 cylinder engines require a level of lubrication maintenance that many owners will not properly prioritize, so buying a used car will be far riskier than it is today.

Personally I think Toyota should have gone all hybrid for the 23 Highlander. It could have driven sales up, since your average Joe or Jane cross-shopping the large SUV segment would notice the dramatically higher fuel economy of the Highlander. Especially with current fuel prices. And the hybrid is likely more reliable.

I test drove both the hybrid and the V6 Highlanders back to back. The hybrid felt really “meh”. The V6 felt so much better in every way. I couldn’t justify buying the V6 because of gas prices, and after driving the V6 I couldn’t imagine driving the hybrid every day, so I ended up walking out with neither.
