High mileage Lexus used for Uber. How is it holding up? $300 Mistake caught?

My emergency room story for those wondering. I was wearing work gloves as I was changing the transaxle fluid in my daughters 2012 Sienna. The drain plug was very tight so I bared down on it and it let loose...driving my left hand down into the concrete floor. It hurt but I just shook it off and finished the job (and the rear differential fluid change). When I removed the glove, I noticed my ring finger was getting swollen so I tried removing the wedding ring....nope, not even close. Kept it in ice water most of the night, hoping it would get better but woke up the next day and the finger was a scary reddish-blue color. Went to ER and they said they had to cut it off. "My finger or the ring?" Thankfully, the ring and they have pretty cool tool for that. (Looks like a Drummel) I still need to bring the ring to my jeweler to get it re-welded together.

Speaking as a retired line mechanic (27yrs, Porsche, Audi, Volvo, VW), I would like to make two comments: I truly appreciate your professionalism and thoroughness. You know your product line and what to look for. Also, if this would have been a German made vehicle, the entire bottom of the car would have been covered with oil and antifreeze (after 100k mls)! I know from personal experience just how badly these leak. This vid is a testimony as to how good the Toyota brand is. Love your vids, keep up the good work!

Cool. I have a 2006 matrix 4wd with 186,000 miles and have done over 9,100 rides. Car runs perfect (just replaced intake gaskets to fix rough idle in the cold) and back seats are in excellent shape. I try to maintain it like an aircraft.

You have to be the most honest mechanic on any planet! Some brake pad manufacturers put renovable clips so that when the pads wears down to about 50% the warning light comes one. I took the clips off and was good for another 3 years. I simply remove the clips prior to subsequent replacements.

Your veracity in your videos continue to solidify your viewers. I am glad to know that I can use Toyota parts on my Lexus. The price differential is great. There are no AMD in my town so you are one in a thousand or even greater. The average citizen has no way of finding an honest mechanic and shop except trial and error. Most vehicle owners go thru their whole vehicle lives and NEVER find a honest shop and mechanic. And the Dealership can have bad mechanics, too. So car owners are holding a losing hand, most times. Do mechanics have to have any certification from the State, etc..so the Public is protected from scams and incompetence? These quick lubes places are minimum wage workers -that most time know nothing- about vehicle maintenance and operations. They specialize in upselling filters, etc. you many not need and repairs they are incapable of doing, professionally. Just shows that politicians care less about the safety of the public.

0:56 - I could tell right off the bat the hood has been repainted. The paint is "tiger striped" (metallic striping from improper air pressure) and the paint was applied very light.

I had a good experience, many years ago, from our local mechanics at Christian Brothers Automotive. My wife's Corolla had a loud screeching noise from one of the front wheels. I brought it over and they looked at it and said, "She just had a small pebble stuck in the caliber so we removed it and it's fine, pads look good, no charge" I was speechless and have gone there ever since with anything I can't handle.

If it's the same Christian Brothers I went to then possibly they've changed business practices. Quote to replace a fuel pump went up $200 because THEY snapped a bolt off. When I got my car back the passenger side kick panel was laying on the floor and the mechanic tracked grease all over my door panel. I've grown weary of any company that announces their faith in a attempt to come across moral and trustworthy.

AMD, I have done 273,000 miles in my Toyota Prius V or as they call it in the UK (Prius+) and the engine has just got the basic maintenance like Oil and oil filter with air filter and spark plugs and coolant changes. All the maintenance I have done ti my car has only been used Toyota Genuine Parts

KYB makes 80% of all Toyota's factory struts and shocks. They are the OEM. However, there is a big difference in the tuning in the aftermarket vs oem struts with the aftermarket lines usually being much "stiffer." Also, KYB gives a lifetime warranty on their entire aftermarket line much of which is made in Japan.

just because struts are manufactured by KYB doesn't mean that all the lines of their products are of same quality. OEM companies like Toyota, Honda, etc order products from manufacturers like KYB with stringent quality control and requirements. sadly such Quality Control doesn't often travel to their products that are sold as aftermarket products. manufacturers like KYB get million dollar orders from big car companies and they'll go above and beyond to satisfy every quality check the car companies ask of them. if a product doesn't pass Quality Control more often than not it ends up as aftermarket product sold by the company themselves. long story short, OEM product is lot superior than aftermarket products even if manufactured by same company

@@lordjaashin A large tier 1 supplier like KYB or Denso is not going to supply their "rejected parts" to the aftermarket. Those get scrapped immediately if there even are any rejects because quality control is so stringent throughout the manufacturing process. Instead, they have different lines altogether in a different factory that supply their aftermarket lines. In the case of Denso the product is identical just made in a different factory. In the case of KYB, the struts are made in the same factory with the same materials and processes just on a different line. However, the internal valve/piston assemblies are very different in that within the aftermarket line they use a generic valve/piston for use in multiple struts, whereas, they use a vehicle specific valve/piston on their OEM lines. I will say also that the "quick struts" that KYB sells are not the same as OEM at all because the springs, steering bearing, and other hardware do not come from the same tier 1 suppliers Toyota uses in their factories and are obviously lower quality.

I found that the KYB shocks I bought at about twice the price of the monroes lasted about twice as long. So you save installation cost of the second set. Shocks typically last about 4-6 mths on a taxi so the extra life was appreciated. I remember buying a vehicle from a dealer and he told me they had just put in new shocks and he was telling the truth. Of course they don't put in quality shocks so within two weeks they had to be replaced. I kinda of always wondered how uber lux vehicles can afford the depreciation on their vehicles. It is something that the average car owner doesn't really think about. Meaning that when your buying a car the last thing people think about is when your going to have to go through the same process again.

ES300h is a great idea for Uber and Lyft, especially since newer models qualify for the more expensive fares like Uber Premier and Lyft Lux. I use an HS250h for Uber and Lyft, and although it's too old for the fancy fares, a hybrid vehicle really makes a lot of sense for a rideshare driver, because the biggest expense is fuel. Most of my driving is inner city, stop-and-go, and lots of hills, which means that my HS250h can usually do around 32 MPG, while my 7th gen Camry V6 gets about 18 MPG in the same conditions. I also recently replaced rear brakes on the HS since the car had the original 113,000-mile pads and rotors from 2010. Pad wear was starting to get very uneven thanks to some very stubborn caliper slide pins, but I addressed everything! Great video.

I had my brakes inspected last week and was told the front was good (green), the back brakes was caution (yellow)! This was the results from my Certified Toyota Multi Point Walk Around Inspection report! I have the rear replaced with after market (NAPA) brakes. I do notice the difference in the braking!

This Lexus is a clone of our car, right down to the missing air filter on the battery cooling fan. It must be the Canadian model. Two items of note: In three years, the one repair I had to make was to the hood latch. I oiled it. Lack of lubrication had caused it to fail to close. My Ontario car went in for a re-paint of the bottom part of the trunk lid due to corrosion beginning around the stick-on medallion and the horizontal trim piece. At $400 CDN it was a simple and relatively inexpensive fix. At 150,000 km our 2014 es300h remains exceptionally reliable and economical to own. Thank you for this expert analysis of an identical car.

Honest is about hard to find as picking the winning lottery numbers. Should be a better system, do away with flat rate and pay salary or hour wage would be a good start.

Keep in mind as a hybrid, the front brakes are regenerative so they don’t wear nearly as much as regular brakes!

If the pads (or a single pad) is NOT perfectly level in either the up/down direction, or in the left/right direction (ie has a runoff) upon close inspection, AND the car still has a superb braking feel, it's an indicator that there is a partial seize in the piston(s) for the pad it's clamping has developed. The caliper pins could also be seizing/seized if it's a more basic caliper. The nonuniform pad wear, caused by the partially seized brake components, then causes an out-of-round groove to form in the rotor, and the pad goes into and comes out of the groove, which causes the brake vibration. In addition to replacement of pads and rotors (or a resurfacing if it makes sense), the only way to fix it is to remove the pistons from the caliper, clean out all the black debris trapped in the caliper (which does not get removed during a brake fluid flush), and then reinstall the pistons using a new brake seal kit (and replace the pistons if they are bad)... I drove my Tacoma with minor brake pulsing for 14 months (after replacement of the originals which I got 80000 miles out of)..it would only pulse under light braking, and never would pulse under moderate or hard. The whole fable of carbon build-up on the rotors did not apply, as hard sudden brake applications didn't make the pulsing stop. Turned out that one of the pads had very very slight irregular wear, caused by partially seized pistons. New piston reseal kit, and caliper clean out...the brakes felt better than new!

Look at the Project Farm tests of air filters. The K&N performed very poorly. In terms of keep the air clean, Wix and Purolator were the clear winners.

Mechanic shops up sell services all the time. My friend with an X3 and a maintenance plan got a call from the dealer service center manager telling him to replace the brakes ASAP due to a safety concern. When my friend said sure go ahead, it should be free due to my maintenance plan, they did an 180 saying brakes are fine you need to wait for the pad wear light to turn on in the gauges!!!! Lol 😂

I like my 1st generation Prius engine layout, where one half is the gas engine and the driver side is the battery components. The lube workers don’t need to mess around the electrical hook ups, and everything is easy to see and work on.

I really enjoy your show. I did my first work on a 1950 Studebaker straight six with overdrive single barrel carb. I had two of them and they each cost me $100 in 1962 and 1963. A 1964 Studebaker (hawk) what I called it and then a 1967 French 4 speed on the column Simca with lay down seats. A 1967 or 1970 Opel next. A 1970 Buick Lesabre and a 1972 Chevy Chevette and then my 1972 Corvette. I did all work on theses cars including pulling engines out with a chain and a tree in the front yard. I was later on able to develop suppliers around the world to make 16 cylinder crankshafts for 96 litre engines along with con rods,dampers and an assortment of other engines and earth moving equipment that was bright yellow in color. My suppliers were around the world and I spent most of my time on their shop floors I have a 2007 Lexus RX350 that I bought a couple years back when I moved back to the states after living in Xuzhou, China for 17 plus years.Really have been able to buy it from a good former Toyota and Lexus mechanic. He like you is an honest Christian. The Lexus has 150,000 miles on it and is in great shape. Its home seems to be from the Quad cities. Cars, engines and earth moving equipment really are my hobby along with the stock market. Would love to siy and talk with you some day. Regards Mike B.

OK I was going to ask the same thing about the strut because I’ve never seen that on a Toyota Lexus vehicle before in my years of working on them my father worked for the forklift division of Toyota, he’s only like five Avalon‘s over the years, all Diamond white lol…. He loved the Avalon’s lol.

I have 2013 ES 300h with 190,000. It’s still amazing. With proper maintenance and trips to service (dealer), it’s held up shockingly well. Even the leather seats have barely worn. It’s wild how good these cars are.

As always very valuable information, learning so much on your channel example had my 2021 Hybrid RAV4 in at Toyota for an oil change and they overfilled by almost 1/2 a Quart, from one of your videos I knew this is not good so I removed the extra, and this just makes me realize why I should just do my own oil changes. Talking from experience AMD will always give you a reality check and tell you clearly that his not a fan of after market parts specially when it comes to SUSPENSION. In Amd voice "Suspension = OEM no questions asked"

I'm so tempted to buy one of these. They are expensive upfront but I think it will pay for itself many times over. Such amazing deal with Lexus Select, covered forever on all but common wear items for 10 years or 200k km (125k miles). If one is ever to sign your life away on a car, these are the ones to have. It will actually keep running past 7-10 years it takes to pay for it.

Great video and inspection tutorial. 2010 MDX I had a FP tire slow leak, a local chain pulled the tire and fixed it and told me I needed to do a brake job. I looked and said I probably had another 20k on them and I'd take care of it. I told him these were the original pads @265k miles he said no way. I told him I drive 357 miles back and forth to work each week for 5 years(plus family trips) and all open road with very little to no braking. He couldn't believe it but I assured him I bought it at 60k and didn't think it needed brakes before me and I do all my maintenance. Until you look no one can possibly know what the scenario is. I'm a retired manager/mechanic and no longer work long distance. 284k miles. 70% of braking is done by the front and will need replacing more often normally. I'll get a rotor turned rather than buy aftermarket, the metal of the OE rotors are better. Ceramic pads.

I drive a 2016 Lexus ES 300h for Uber and Lyft, too! Bought it in July/2020 with 76,600 miles on it at $21,700. Did the 90,000 mile maintenance which cost me nearly $1,300 at the dealership which I believe I got ripped off! They changed all the fluids for $1,300! I should have backed off and went somewhere else! Did the 120,000 and 150,000 mile maintenance both at 150,000 miles which included the sparkplugs all for about $1,300 at another dealership because they were $300 cheaper. As I was watching this video I noticed the car has that signed "Please do not slam the door" sticker which I have on my car, too! LoL! Those doors slam way too easily especially for a luxury car!! I always get passengers who just LOVEs the look of the interior and the car itself! They are just wowed by the experience even though it's not a BMW or Mercedes. In about a year, I hope to buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander or maybe even a 2023 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid.

I am near the fence of pulling the trigger on a 2016 Lexus es 300h with 85k miles for ride share as well - Lyft. Independent dealer is asking 19k for it. Do you still have this vehicle? How many miles do you have on it now? I’ve thought about a Prius but it is just too small and the Lexus is way more comfortable and nicer. Do u think it is a good deal? I reside in LA. I’d appreciate your feedback good sir.

My 2015 Yaris is on it's 2nd front original pads,i'm glad the last owner continued with using Toyota pads,the feed & brake wondeful. My old 2001 Yaris needed front pads,i used a different brand....didn't feel as great thou. Well chuffed with genuine Toyota brake pads.

Seems like the sunroof rattle affects many models across the Lexus range. I had a rattle that took months to pinpoint but it ended up being the sunroof. The seal was an absolute bear to install but it fixed the rattle immediately. ‘09 IS350

In Iraq, Ladas, Moskovitches, Volgas and Gazzes from the 1970s, are still in service (mainly working as shuttles between towns in the countryside). No car on earth could have been made poorer than these Soviet brands and models. What's the secret then having them still running - and running strong? The Energy put into maintaining and modifying them in replacements and alternative parts. "No Energy system can produce sum useful Energy in excess of the total Energy put into constructing it. Energy, like time, flows from past to future". Wailing.

John, they are litterally the same. If you want to do cheaper services, get a 4 cyl toyota. A bigger engine will always use more qts during an oil change. My lexus takes 7qts. Its a v6. My sisters camry takes 4.6 qts. My other sisters prius takes 4qts. In the long run, the smaller the engine the more money will be saved on maint and gas. A hybrid will cost more to maintain than a simple 4cyl because the hybrid system has more electric parts prone to failure. Thoyota hybrids have long lasting brakes though because they use brake regenerative system aka just a fany way to say the transmissiom helps slow the car down before the brakes.

@@adamdistortion8810 i think you mean the electric motor runs the other way to turn kinetic energy into electrical energy during the regen braking process. albeit the regen braking only takes place on one of the axles, hence the other axle still may need the regular brakes to put in the same amount of work.
