Our friend's 2 door 1984 GLI is a perfect example of this episodes subject. According to VWoA, the GLI was never sold as a 2 door in America, yet it was bought in California as new. So strange.

The very first brand new car that I ever purchased for myself was a Ford Probe GT Year One. I drove it for 270,000 miles and recorded the odometer mileage octane of the gas, brand of the gas, amount of the purchase in dollars and gallons and calculated the fuel mileage, for all 270,000 miles. I also recorded the mileage of every oil change and the type of oil( simple enough since it was always mobil 1) and oil filter ( also simple enough since it was always Motorcraft). I loaned and later sold the car to a colleague who immediately placed a rainbow sticker on the trunk, and a week later EVERYONE I KNOW staged an "intervention" style get together where they all said they were shocked but all would support me no matter what.

C43 bit is reeeally cool. Favorite one you've done in a while! Yeah in Europe the consensus is everyone dislikes each other. I live in Greece went to look at a Peugeot 208 (worst car I've driven yet) and a Clio (tiny backseat) and the dealer went "I never touch Greek-owned cars" and he imported his stuff from France. Dunno if he was taking us for a ride but it definitely raised my eyebrow. "I did not declare such things" "Yes you did not" lmfao

When I bought my first car, a 1965 Mustang, (rusty as hell, and a straight six automatic) the original owner gave me his gas log. Might be OCD, but that's exactly who you want as a previous owner. Somewhere I still have the window sticker from that car.
@stromaluski2 жыл бұрын
I was able to track down the original owner of my 1967 VW Bus by looking at names/dates on a handful of receipts that I got with the bus when I bought it in 2002. I wrote a letter and sent it to the address on the receipt hoping that he still lived there, and he got back to me. And then subsequently mentioned that he had 30 years worth of service records, the original owners manual, the original window sticker, etc, etc for my bus. I met him a couple times and was able to get all of that documentation from him. He was a super nice guy.

I have an archeological story with a W202 too. Mine left the factory in June 99, and stayed in a showroom not selling due to undesired specs (manual, no-leather, sport version) and the imminent release of the W203 chassis. The car was finally sold in April 02! The maintenance records only showed a battery change. I'm sure the buyer payed half the money for this C240 Sport. I bought the car to the first owner (not including the Dealer that was the first owner registered) with 255.000 km in 2016. Neat car. W202 is the best C-Class. Cheers from Argentina!

I'm a kindred spirit on keeping a gas log (and on a Corolla at one point). I switched to an app once that was a thing. Don't know why I do it, but I think I'd be more concerned about forgetting to log than forgetting to put the gas cap back.

Two of my biggest regrets were not to take a picture when my uncle bought a W126 when I was 8 (and 15 years later, I would buy that exact same car from him as my first old Benz) and not driving her 6 years later and not take a picture with him on the side of the same car. Months later he went sick and left us, but he was the guy that cemented the Mercedes-Benz affection in me.

Hyphen's story from 32:10 hits close to home here. I was on a somehow business trip and my mom had to take my car out of the garage so she could clean it, scrapped the whole side of the car. I only found out a couple of years later when I was actually trading it in for another car and the guy saw something irregular, I assured the guy everything was alright and the car had never been repainted, but we did not close the deal. When I got home and told my mom about it she admitted whats happened and that's it.

When I turned my E39 525iT into the dealer on trade (after cylinder 1 decided to have no more compression) I printed off my spreadsheet of every repair, fill up, oil change, etc. I had done from 58,600-~115k when it grenaded. I keep this type of log for my 2018 Ford Escape. According to these two I'm damaged. And I take that as a compliment.

Wow, the W202 brakeline story sounds frightening to me. I had a W202 without traction control and stability control (mine was a '94 and those two things came later. ) In the two or three years i had it, i had to emergency brake rather often thanks to idiots on the road, so i was pretty happy about the ABS. Especially in the wet or on snow. my previous car had no ABS (an '84 300D wagon) and so i learned to keep the brake very close to lockup in emergency situations. But that cost a lot of brainpower when it was also needed to see if there's any space available to manouvre the car into if the distance would not be enough ect. Much easier with ABS. (at least for me)

I bought my 2005 Holden Calais from a dealership in 2013. A couple of years ago I was leaving work and there was someone hanging around my car, turned out it was the original owner and she said her husband regrets selling it. So she ended up giving me her business card and told me if I ever want to sell it to call her unfortunately these days it doesn't look so great and I don't really want to give it back to her in the current condition
