Would you have cut the hole bigger to the next joist or fill it where it was?

Damn good work! Thank you for, 1. Being a fantastic role model for girls and women (Moms, show your daughters these videos), and, 2. Demonstrating to the doubting fellows how capable women can be.

Back filing joints is always the best move when patching, it helps to glue the boards together, well done

I have used expanding foam as a pre filler as I find it holds everything solid and prevents cracks. Particularly effective on old lath and plaster. I saw that on the Painting & Decorating channel. That Chanel is a very good resource for repairs around the house before your finish jobs.

Instead of “pre-filling” expanding foam will stick the boards & dries super quick. Cut it off, push it back a bit & fill. I use Soudal Genius foam; keep the tube nice n clean & a can lasts ages. David-The Happy Painter.

Amazing job, love watching you tackle these jobs, I wish I'd been taught how to have ago at tasks like these- alas it was never encouraged when I was younger- now I'm too old. You're an inspiration for young women and should be on the national curriculum. Keep up the good work for woman kind.🙂 🙂

Yayy! Noggins! (I also watch 'Escape to Rural France'. A slightly larger restoration project, Highly reccommended) The only thing I would have done differently is the chamfering. I'd have done that before placing the new strip of plasterboard. And just maybe made that strip slightly wider as that 10cm wide strip is awfully fragile. I did the taping and plastering on the walls of my apartment when it was built, and yeah, paper tape, none of the webbed, glue-backed tape anywhere. I didn't wet the tape, but watered down plaster is the way to go. (I had never done plastering before, just got a 3minute talk about it from the guy who did the ceiling.) I laid the carpet, parquet and tile flooring, too. (It was in the contract that I either had to do it myself, or hire someone. Lowered the price a bit) I really want a multitool. Maybe next month. I may need one to shorten some door trim then. (Going to replace carpeting with 14mm parquet. Yeah, I could easily cut the end of the trim with something else... so what? I want a new tool! )
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 ай бұрын
I'll look them up :) And chamfering first would have been a MUCH better idea 🤣 It's awkward doing it while it's up on the ceiling! And good for you doing the flooring, carpet. Fitting carpets is a skill I would prefer to hire out.... I'm ok with square rooms, but not ones with chimney breasts etc (did it once and wouldn't do it again... took me FAR too long🤣)

Very tidy indeed! You might be able to dot and dab that wall with 9mm to meet the existing plaster if it's thick enough. I can't quite tell how thick the original plaster is or if there's render behind it from the video. My old lime plaster was getting on for an inch thick in places so we had loads of depth to play with. I personally quite like a plaster skim on walls even over pb, it's a bit more durable to the odd knock.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 ай бұрын
Ahhh... that's a good point! I know it's more than 12.5mm thick on the wall adjacent as i tried cutting my notch out at that and it wasn't enough. I may try that! It had plaster and render, but yes, plaster is def more hardwearing and may be more suitable for here in our future office area.

If you're tape and fill. Do you use tapered edge boards? It would allow more filler in ,and less chance of cracking, I tend to use fibre tape, you plaster mix looked a bit too sloppy, but you got the job done, and it looks pretty good 👍.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 ай бұрын
I would've used tapered plasterboard for the ceiling with fibatape like before if the other edge was also tapered. But I also wanted to practice paper tape on square edges more (with wet paper) for the TV wall area, which is why I didn't go for tapered there this time.
